@@mattdayphoto I found this really really cool photo book called A Day in the Life of America. The author of the book had 200 different photographers from all over the world come to different locations all over America and for one day all 200 Photographers took 1 picture of different aspects of America all over the country. Each photo has a story about the photo and stuff. Also on each page there's a small little graph that shows where in the states the photo was taken and at one time. and it also mentions from where in the world the photographer is from. Because remember all 200 photographers took 1 photo on the exact same day. Anyways it's a really fascinating concept to the book and the photos and the stories make it worth a mention if you have the time. I believe it's all film as well.

When I first started watching your stuff it was all about the gear reviews. Then, as I realized that collecting the gear (afraid being afraid to use it) wasn't doing me any good, I started watching videos with an emphasis on shooting. That made me want to go shoot. Then I built up the courage to try to develop and scan my own stuff. Once again your videos came in handy. Currently I shoot everyday, work on personal projects, and am craving inspiration. Now, I find myself coming back to these photo book reviews. This is coming from a full-time wedding photographer who had gotten bored with photography beyond shooting friend's bands. Your enthusiasm for film helps keep me inspired.

I found the Erwitt book at a used store...you're right that thing is massive! It weighs 9lbs but beautiful. Since publishing my first book of street photography last year I started collecting photo books myself. Besides Elliott's I have several of Saul Leiter, a couple of Vivian Maier, and a great one of Ernst Haas and his NY stuff in color that you should check out.

Hi Matt, I've stumbled across your channel and I wanted to let you know that you're a breath of fresh air. You lack any pretense, you're real and you're you. You don't try to play your audience and you don't try to be slick or a youtube superstar. You don't try to generate hits (at least not obviously) and you don't seem to try to be the "influencer" by getting cozy with the manufacturers, going on various sponsored trips and so on. In other words, you're not a shill and that's so refreshing. I'm glad you're feeling better and that you're recovering from the tick bite. I bet it sucks, being even mildly disabled and it takes time, patience and perseverance to get better. I take my hat off to you. Good luck with your endeavors. I hope you get better soon and I hope your financial situation improves and things become easier.. All the best. PS. Check out Ernst Haas, Andre Kertesz and Wynn Bullock. Their books are worth adding to your collection.

These artists of photography are best known by their work, not by their name, which I think is really impressing, cause this is actually how it works. When I see today's artists harassing social media and the whole internet and tryna get their reputation by having their name anywhere in this world, it is obvious that no one of them will ever make it there.

Excellent book suggestions. Some I already own and some I need to check out. For that 'country aesthetic' and documentary portraits, I can recommend two by John Miller. He is photographer, artist and educator (Professor of Photography, Northern Vermont University). These are books from his extensive library of work documenting life in the Northeast Kingdom of the US. A place where he was born and currently resides. 1) Deer Camp: Last Light in the Northeast Kingdom 2) Granite & Cedar: The People and the Land of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

Thanks for this informative video. Some of the names of the photographers you showed were familiar to me, others not, but I haven’t yet seen any of these titles. I will check out as many as I can, and I do mean check out. My first stop for all things printed is the library. We happen to have a pretty good public library system where I live and I work at a school that has an even better library. It’s nice to be able to borrow a book and get to know it before deciding to purchase. You asked for suggestions; mine is Nicholas Nixon’s Close Far. The photos-taxonomic, not so much documentary-are spectacular and they draw you in. The book itself is beautifully laid out and printed by Steidl-for me, the best photo publishing house on the planet.

I am new to this. I came here only because of our having met at the Battle Of Monmouth reenactment today, June 22, 2019. I wrote a comment to you after having watched the first video I caught- how you got started in photography.I am not sure how to find it to edit out the comment I wrote about sending greetings to your father. When I saw your video about your seige with a tick-born illness, I realized that your father is no longer on Earth. You also mentioned that, along with these two experiences, your mother's battle with breast cancer combined to make the last couple of years especially gruelling. Here we are nearly half-way through the year. What achievement to have made it to Freehold, NJ to fillin your documentary about 3 athletes one of whom is triathlete Chris Wines in his role as a reenactor at the Battle of Monmouth!

I got the Black Trilogy book, too. It's great! I first heard about Gibson years ago because of Deja Vu and his very intentional placement of photos in spreads in relation to the creation of diptychs. The only other photographer I've heard about that was/is so serious about photo order and design is Todd Hido.

It has gorgeous black & white photos, but is also a bunch of essays into the whole internal process of image making, (not just shooting, but much deeper as well) for us all to look inside ourselves and find our own unique photographic vision. You clearly have yours, but I still find his outlook quite refreshing, wholly positive & inspiring. Definitely check it out if you haven't already.

Ian Guevara Thanks! I have an Audio-Technica LP60, a really simple and basic turntable, and the speakers are Edifier R1280T. Nothing crazy or too expensive, but they’ve served me well for several years now!

Check out Nestor Judkin’s work and zines! He documents the places he goes for skate trips, a little bit of actual skating, and the BTS for demos etc. he’s on IG, his handle is just his name. He has 4 zines but I think one is sold out.

Great job Matt good to see you back and healthy, finally I have a way to give back and help you in a small way. To create affiliate links for Amazon go to Amazon Associates dot-com you sign up and enter your information then whenever you're ready to use one of those links you go back to Amazon Associates and find the product you're looking for and there's a yellow button that when you click it will bring up a link that you can copy and paste to enter your KZread description. The percentage you get varies and it's very small sometimes like 4% but it really adds up at the end of the month especially if you get a lot of clicks or if the item costs a lot. Now I will hush up and finish watching your review LOL. Respect

What about William Eggleston? I would have thought that his photography and the locations for his photography would be compelling to you. He's also a master of color, your new interest. And if you can explain how he does what he does, I'd love such a video.

Matt, KZread is fukked up. I was unsubscribed from your channel. Just happened to check it. WTF? It also happened to another channel I follow. The Jimmy Dore show. I had assumed it was because of Dore's outspoken politics, but if it happened on your channel, I can only assume it is some random bug. Anyway, glad to see you have gotten your health back. I always enjoy your stuff.

Hey Matt! You love Elliott Erwitt and his humor and now his Kolor? Do you know his alter ego: André S. Solidor? Check him out! EE is the greatest! And to your comments on the Mary Ellen Mark behind the scenes commentary: check out the new edition of Annie Leibovitz At Work for great insight. There’s even a gear and film break down! Spoiler alert: lots of Mamiamya RB/Z 67! Happy New Year. Hope you’re feeling well.

With your new interest in color I’d like to recommend two artists and their inexpensive books on each of them. You may or may not be familiar with Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter. Check them out and if you are intrigued they each have inexpensive books called Thames & Hudson Photofile (and their name as title) available on Amazon for about 15 dollars you will not be disappointed
