    I discovered your channel today and added several comments. To be honest, I am Chinese born in America but I am gradually losing my my mother tongue because I no longer have any need to speak Chinese! The phrase you will lose it if you don't use it and in my case, it couldn't be more true!! I spoke Chinese with my parents when I was child. I gradually spoke less and less Cantonese with my parents when I started school. My parents passed away more than 20 years ago! All my Chinese friends have no need to speak our language so we don't and we are all losing our mother tongue!! My wife speaks Hong Kong Cantonese. My dialect is different from hers. She has some difficulty with my dialect so, strangely, we communicate in English!! My dialect is from Guangzhou and hoi-peng. I don't know the relationship. I think Guangzhou is the region where my parents came from. What hoi-peng is I have no idea!! Maybe you could tell me? Lol!! My parents passed away before I had a chance to learn of my origin. I still know some words, I can longer carry on a conversation with a non-English speaking Chinese person. I have been speaking English for such a long time, I don't know if I'm able to relearn Cantonese!! Looks like I will be spending time on your KZread channel!!! Wish me luck!! My children obviously born in the US, can neither speak nor understand any Chinese!!

    Hi Steven, Thank you for watching! It's great that you're picking up Cantonese again because of your root. Those everyday words and at least the sound of it will be refreshed and I'd think you'd be able to pick up words quickly :) GuangZhou and Hoi-peng are both located in the GuangDong province, where most people speak Cantonese. Although the accent is slightly different than Hong Kong Cantonese, it's very subtle. Have fun learning Cantonese, and feel free to ask if you have any questions :) Team CantoneseClass101.com

    I speak a different dialect of Cantonese. My dialect is from Guangzhou or "hoi peng" which has slight differences in the dialect you are teaching. You say "nei ho" I would say "nei ho mah" . "Mah" with low or falling tone. "Feng shui" spoken by me is "fon suey" the "o" is a hard sound as in the word "phone" and "suey" as in chop suey. "Sofa" for me is "saw fah".

  • @parsifal40002

    @parsifal40002

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would pronounce the numbers with slight differences. "1" is "yeet", 2 gnei, 3, on the other hand is difficult to anglicize it is a diphthong, so here goes it kind of sounds like "th-lahm", pronounce "th" sound then the "lahm" sounds together. Told you it was hard! 4 is also not easy! Please bear in mind, my parents taught me these pronunciations when I was 4. I don't know to pronounce 5 in words. Closest is the "ng" sound , 6 is "lok" as in the movie character, Loki. 7 in my dialect identical to your pronunciation. 8 sounds like "vbaht" with a "b" sounded together with the "v". FINALLY, 10 in my dialect is "seep". The differences in your Cantonese and mine are subtle but they are there!

    "Hou2" by itself means "very." But in Cantonese sentences, we use it in front of adjectives instead of the verb "be". For example, "He is tall" keoi5 hou2 gou1 (literally "he very tall"); "you are pretty" nei5 hou2 leng3 (literally "you very pretty") Hope this is helpful. Hi Steven, Both Bruce Lee and Chow-Yun Fat speak Cantonese and spent many years living in Hong Kong. They probably learned how to speak Mandarin, since the two dialects are similar. Mandarin and Cantonese are different dialects under the Chinese language umbrella, so while you'll find some words and terms are similar, some can be different. Nevertheless, your Mandarin background will be very helpful in learning Cantonese! Keep up the good work and feel free to ask if you have any questions. Team CantoneseClass101.com

    很可惜,虽然在语法上两者基本没有区别,但不管是书面形式还是发音上,两者的出入还是很大的,不过只要您用心学,至少作为广东本地人,我还是觉得粤语很简单的 Unfortunately, although there is basically no difference in grammar between the two, there are still significant differences in both written form and pronunciation. However, as long as you study it with your heart, at least as a native of Guangdong, I still think Cantonese is very simple

    The numbers behind the romanization are tones. Since the same pronunciation in different tones has different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out our other videos here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqGhzdaNdNK5YJc.htmlm18s kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXd6162oj5y_dsY.html Team CantoneseClass101.com

    There are different system, and for our company, we teach the system that uses 6 tones. The three extra glottal stop (-p/-t/-k) sounds are expressed in the romanization rather than tone. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Team CantoneseClass101.com

    That's because there are far fewer tones and inflections in Mandarin! Many Chinese consider Cantonese to be the more "scholarly" dialect...

    I guess the reason why I hear it so vividly is because Vietnamese has a whole bunch of vowels and tone marks that make many different sounds that sound so similar. Cantonese is surprisingly easy for me but I still need some work. You just need to really train your ears to hear it. Just like Japanese, although Japanese doesn't have tone marks, it does have pitch accents and you should look out for them. :3c
