@@Orcomi Hey man, no you're totally right on that. When I started watching the Kanji video from 101 Pod I realized without basic vocabulary knowledge it was kinda pointless so I switched to learning vocabulary and then the formation of adjectives and verbs (grammar in general). It's been going pretty good and on the way I learned Kanji as well. Now I'm more into speaking Japanese with other people and stabilising my pronunciation. If you're interested in speaking practices I highly recommend using the apps Hello Talk or Hilokal. Those two has been helping me a lot. Anyways since you're here tell me how your studies has been going in Japanese.

@@trigger1377 Here's a tip! For hiragana し the stroke goes up at the end, right? So does the katakana シ for the last stroke. The hiragana つ the stroke goes down. The katakana ツ also goes down for the last stroke. This should make it a bit easier. ソ and ン just takes practice. You use ン a lot in katakana words so you will remember quickly when writing a lot in katakana. Good luck studying!

Not sure if the way I explain it would help anyone else but I like to think シ has marks laying on top of each other like sheets (shi tsu) so n (so n) is all that's left. シツ ソン Also while it's subtle here a lot of fonts make the two marks either true vertical or true horizontal so they're easier to discern. Otherwise just pay close attention to whether the flat sides of the marks point to the top or bottom of the cradling stroke.

The mnemonics does help! After learning the hiragana, I made a table on my notebook. In one column there is the hiragana, on the second column I write the mnemonics that Risa made on the video. If I want to know how to write the katakana sa, for example, I look it up for the hiragana sa, which I recognize, and I see that the mnemonic is "saddle". It helps me visualize the katakana easier that way, without showing me the charater (it is a little bit harder but makes the learning faster)

It's a shame I'm at work and on a 15 minute break and can't stick around for the whole thing because I'd absolutely use you as a guide for learning the second Japanese alphabet. And I might go watch the hiragana video too, if there is one, to see if theres any other easier ways to remember things that I didn't think of.

Finally finished with this video😭😭 Took 2-3 days. Just as long as it took me to learn hiragana. I am fairly surprised at how quickly I understood, honestly thought it would take a month but it was basically a week to know all the syllables. Now all I gotta do is memorize/understand, learn new words and pronounce the words as close to a native as possible. Then onto the infamous kanji. For those still going through the process of learning, がんばっで! Do your best and remember you don’t learn something going new without consistency and understanding!

For example, learn 50 words then convert those words and learn the kanji for them. Then take those kanji for those words and learn the words they appear in. Rinse and repeat.

When you're learning a language like Spanish or German, you already know the writing system (more or less), thousands of cognates, most of the grammar structures, and can easily make sense of the cultural quirks. And those languages still take many hundreds of hours to learn. With Japanese, you have none of those advantages going in. It is among the most foreign of foreign languages for English speakers. Most of us will never reach anything approaching fluency because we will have become discouraged long before that point (if we were ever really putting in the hours in the first place). Good luck to us all -- we're going to need it.
