I’d be fascinated to hear tunes such as bohemian rhapsody, Hotel California, in that mode similar to finger-style guitarists like: - James Bartholomew - Igor Presnyakov - Lucas Imbiriba: Rendering ‘Stairway to Heaven’

Nice to see something on Efers. I specialized on Eb for years before i went to oboes. I have an extension for the lower section which does help on low E or b....but yes, the MP and barrel are the parts that make a difference. It s a fun axe both in classical as well as Klezmer or German Volksmusik

I seriously doubt wood choice in the bell makes any difference, Try playing your clarinet with no bell. You can't get the lowest two notes in each register but everything else sounds about the same, But yes, the vent hole does make a difference for tuning the lowest notes.

Exactly - wood choice for the bell has no significant difference on the overall tone! It's only for the looks and nothing more! I hope All-Star Orchestra would show these comments to Jessica Phillips Rieske.

Different bell materials don't do as much change to the overall tone as the mouthpiece or barrel, but they do change a bit the color and resonance of the tone, sometimes make the sound slightly more/less vibrant. It depends a lot on what brand is the bell you're dealing with.

@@quanhoangclarinettist6225 Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this "bell" matter. I completely agree that the mouthpiece and barrel have the most significant impact on the tone. Perhaps, bells do add something to the overall tone; however, I think that this difference shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. The only notes that have direct impact from the bell are the lower chalumeau E, F, F#, (maybe G) and the clarion B - that's it! So in total, we are talking about 5 notes at the most. I think from the financial point of view it doesn't make any sense to spend a good chunk of change on something which only has a mild impact on 10% of notes that are most commonly played (Lowest E to the Altissimo A).

I have a backun bell with a voicing grove inside for my Bb. I can attest that it affects much more than chalumeau. The overall response is better as is the over all tone color especially the throat tones. Believe it or not and crossing the break is much smoother. Any of my colleagues and students who have tried it agree. The ones without the voicing groove did nothing for me. I asked the Backun rep how it affects these notes so far from the bell and he gave my a quite possible scientific explanation that I unfortunately do not remember and quite frankly don't care because I know it works. I also have this tulip barrel on my Eb and it takes out so much of the shrillness but my mouthpiece is too narrow I guess and doesn't work with that cut-out for the reed. And just for the record, I am not a Backun Artist and don't receive compensation for my opinions.

No. The Eb clarinet is not the Piccolo Clarinet. It is the second smallest Clarinet. There is the Eb Clarinet, and then there is the Ab Clarinet. The Ab clarinet is truly the piccolo clarinet, playing, obviously, in the key of Ab. It is very much a real thing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJ55tM-Oiri_Z5s.html That link will take you to a video of every clarinet in the Clarinet family, the Ab Piccolo clarinet being shown there.

I believe there is also a piccolo clarinet in G.
