Thank you for sharing, I wish I could afford to have some (one-off) 4130 steel parts copied/cast from the inferior materials I used at the time I fabricated them. Like Live Steam 1/8 scale AAR Type A locomotive trucks that I have several blueprints of & a plastic & wooden sprocket I made etc.. Any guess how much it would cost to make these in regular 4130 steel for me? Anything more than a few hundred bucks is not feasible for me. I don't even have a milling machine or a lathe yet either :-(

So investment casting only applies for solid parts ? Am I right ?
@martinshingler9394
4 жыл бұрын
Not quite. If you use a core that will later get dissolved out, you can form hollow parts or cavities in the casting
@Artines999
2 жыл бұрын
Not. Because the wax pattern is immersed in the liquid ceramic(ceramic slurry), all parts of the pattern are soaked in ceramic slurry. So if we have a hollow wax pattern, by dipping it in ceramic slurry, all the inner parts of this pattern are impregnated with ceramic. So we will have a complete ceramic mold. The surface of the castings produced by this process is always so uneven and never looks completely finished like a machined part. One would think that the ceramic coating the wax before the sand application would make for a smooth finish on the metal. Looks like the texture of the wax is still transferred to the metal. I've always heard that the castings are simply never as strong as those produced by machining. But what the heck, it's cheaper.
