Lean on Me by Jacob Collier

*The piano you hear is from the MIDI file primarily with a small amount of the original audio included for the vocal reference*
Want to learn how Jacob Collier plays this Bill Withers classic on piano…in this video you can! See how Jacob uses altered chords, key changes, and elaborates on the melody in new and fresh ways. The second track on the 1972 album Still Bill,
Lean on Me has been covered by numerous artists and featured in the 1989 movie of the same name. The transcription that I have created will show you the chords, notes on a grand staff, as well as a piano roll visual. With the MIDI file download link below you can also trigger a sheet music application, slow down/speed up piano part without quality loss, change the key of the song, loop difficult sections, and much more!
For a quote on a transcription you would like for me to do just for you, email me here: chrisbarkersmusic@gmail.com
Due to copyright infringement issues and video blocking I am unable to create KZread videos for many of the suggestions that I receive in the comments section. I do, however, create videos and MIDI files just like on my channel for clients who would like a specific piano part transcribed for any video or audio file!

It is definitely a distinct way of approaching a song but there are definitely some great takeaways from his performances that you can derive from it. I love some of the chord substitutions myself.

Thanks so much Moose, if you stick with it you can definitely make it happen. This particular one was quite difficult to hear over the vocal for sure. Thanks for the Sub!

Unfortunately I don't arrange these for sheet music at this time. I don't record to the grid but to the live recording so if you got the midi file it is possible to arrange it for sheet music. Hope that helps a little at least.

My god. How much time do you need to transcribe such a difficult song??

Hi Erik, a very long time :-) They all are so different but quality of the audio plays a large role in the time needed. I actually try to transcribe songs that are difficult to hear because I find it more challenging. I'm a glutton for punishment. I don't remember this song specifically but I would imagine it probably took me around 5 hours to lay down.

@@chrisbarkerpiano Wow! Such a great score! I mean you have to be insanely hearing-talented to transcribe such a hard piece in that time

Hi Chris, it bought the midifile and it sounds okay. But it is not exactly what Jacob Collier is playing. For example the chords in the second line (from 0.08...) are really different (Ab6 - Ebadd2/G - Fm7). Also it is almost impossible to adjust the midiflie since the beat doesn't match the music. So I'm a bit disappointed.

Hi Ben, I am certainly concerned that you don't think the quality of the MIDI file is top notch, I have strived to make sure it is. That being said I am the first to admit that they are not perfect and I do make mistakes. I will check out the .08 section and correct if needed (thanks for that) ;-) On the tempo of the song...depending on your software it may be coming in on a different tempo than the original. I played right along with him so I'm sure that the tempo is as close as I can get it. I actually have the same problem when I check the MIDI file with my GarageBand app (I use Logic to create the files), it doesn't recognize the correct tempo for some reason. Just as a note I don't BeatMap the song so I set the tempo at the beginning and I play along regardless of whether he is speeding up or slowing down. I have found that process to be the best so far but that definitely could change in the future. If I can make the situation right for you I will be happy to do so, I don't want you to feel you have not received a quality product. Please let me know if there is any other way to improve what I offer as I am definitely still in the learning process. Have a great rest of the week!
