The best ever video I have watched in my life. I was making a presentation on Lean for a training session, but now I realize where we have gone wrong! I simply deleted the whole set of slides which was filled with Lean tools which makes lean so complicated. Instead I found some great videos and bunch of exercises for my students to understand lean. Guess i'm ready for the training. :D Thank you Paul for the Eye opening !

Achinthya thank you so much for the kind words, if you make lean simple, fun and practical you will not believe what can happen it will take on a life of its own. Lean should effect everything thing you do everyday, focus on all the waste you generate and eliminate it everyday and you will be a magnetic for excellence. I wish u all the best on your lean journey! Paul

Hi Paul! Stunning video presentation above and have learned from every video viewed. I believe my dear Father was natural Lean in personality and work ethic. I have a poignant remembrance as a youngster growing up on a wheat ranch in eastern Oregon (dad was a John Deere man :). I was struggling one day and implored of my dad, "Dad I can't work any harder". He looked down at me an stated calmly, "it's not about working harder, but working smarter: This was an epiphany to me as a child and has stayed with me my whole life as well as other sound proverbs he taught me. I am 59 and would have loved to work for you or a company based on this philosophy. Since I am already employed at a job I love, I will employ 'Lean' principles to make my job simpler, smarter, with less 'waste' and also becoming a more productive employee with the bottom line of serving 'my customers' which are the students and staff I love. Thank you!

Hi Paul.. first, happy holidays season!; second, I should say that watching some of your videos reaffirms the fact that the are always cool guys to interact and work with. And not only because of the "lean philosophy" (which I consider is one of the most useful ones in general), but also for the "sharing/teaching philosophy" so that more people seize the experience and knowledge.. I am studying a postgraduate course at the moment in Liverpool, UK, but I am from Guanajuato-Mexico, so if you happen to have some businesses or work-acquaintances around these places please let me know, as I consider it interesting getting to know more people, and moreover working with that people, that share ideas like yours. It is really good to see the improvements done to machines ( like in CNC machine and printer thing). But, there is a one negative thing I see in those improvements. For an example, is the printer tray is designed in a way as it can bear with the stress which is applied by the cable? in the CNC machine, did you think about the safety and how the improvement long term effect the relevant system of the machine? sometimes, if something happens to the machine because of improvement, warranty does not cover it.

Les: If there is any waste that is tolerable, it is exploration and learning. If we focus on all the other waste, this will be small potatoes. Remember everything is a process and every process can be continually improved. Paul

Thanks for the video. This will be a tremendous help to us. I have been trying to get our team to be lean for years and have felt like I was the only one doing it. I believe this will help to get our team more engaged. At 30 minutes in you talk about morning meetings and communicating important info over and over again. Could you elaborate a little more on the structure of these meetings?

  • @FastCapLLC

Sergio don't think of lean in terms of specific to any one industry. The lean philosophy is basically - see waste - eliminate waste thought daily continuous improvement - everything you do is a process. - all processes are filled with Waste If you give me any process in any service industry I will immediately be able to identify the waste and show you how lean apply. The reason why I can do that is because I understand what waste looks like that is the key. Once you begin to see waste you can't unsee it it's everywhere!!!!!

Paul, great video! Finally someone is preaching results are a derivative of the culture! Keep fighting the good fight! BTW as a fellow waste hound I might offer you some advice on your mail. You are over processing by bringing the junk mail into your house, take your trash can to the mailbox and sort it there! You will get some strange looks from the neighbors but you are not going through it and handling it multiple times! 

hello, excellent video!, how do you deal with the the times for launch, and the waste of time in "talking or gossip, watching clothes and shoes catalogs and making and drinking coffee". I think in Mexico people in their jobs waste a lot of time on this "coffe time", they start working an hour after they should .

To quote chapter 20 in my book "'My boss doesn’t get it and won’t support what I’m trying to do.' My reply is always the same; 'focus on yourself, develop your own area of influence and be relentless about continuous improvement in your life. If you adopt this approach, in short order you will not only rise up and be promoted, but you will eventually be the leader of your organization or another thoughtful organization that understands the power of true Lean leadership.'" Hi Paul, Great presentation! I shared it with a number of people including my sister who leads 50 people in a non-profit for at risk kids and she is going to share it with her bosses and hopefully make some really positive and effective changes in reducing waste in the entire organization. Btw, if you've never read Power vs Force I'd highly recommend it - endorsed by Sam Walton, Mother Teresa, Lee Iacocca and Wayne Dyer. Will be sending you my own innovation idea soon. Eric

Hi Paul! I like your video, It's very rich in information. Yet, I have a question please, You said for lean thinkers, Industry standards are a joke, While the impovements made by your employees are due to their knowing puting in consideration the Industry standards, A contradiction, isn't it ?!

+Abdelillah Aboumalik I guess what I'm really trying to say is if you think you're doing good because your meeting industry standards or a little bit above industry standards, you don't really understand continuous improvement. Continues improvement will deliver results exponentially greater the industry standards. Paul

Hi Paul, Great video. I own a 19,00 S.F. millwork shop in CT and I'm looking for some training DVD's to help educate, train and inform my employees in the "Lean" manufacturing way of thinking. Any suggestions for training materials that might fit our needs? We are a 10 person shop and have incorporated several small components in Lean and am looking forward to walking to the deep end of the pool now. Thank you in advance for your help. Jim to start off with make sure that you read my book (2 Second Lean). It is available for free at 2secondlean.com. In your morning meetings I would read one or two pages and discuss it with your team until you get through the entire book. In addition,I would watch one video every morning from our lean library. www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=88 I think this will serve as an excellent training material and discussion material. When you finish doing that, you should go to Gemba Academy (www.gembaacademy.com/) and sign up and start watching their lean videos. When you finish all that, email me at paul@fastcap.com to figure out what to do next! Thanks, Paul
