Every single ski shop employee I've discussed the Shift with tells basically the same story: They're being bought by the wrong people, with unrealistic expectations about what they are and what they're for. The running joke is that the shops sell like 20 pairs of Shifts for every pair of skins. People are buying these things because they like the idea of maybe possibly touring some day, but then they're slapping them on heavy skis and riding the heck out of them every day at the resort. The Shift _can_ stand up to that sort of use if it's properly adjusted, but that brings up he second problem: Shop techs and/or users not knowing how to set up the AFD height adjustment. I'm a 100 kg ex-racer, and have pairs on 191 cm V-Werks Katanas and 191 cm 4FRNT Renegades. I initially had problems with clicking on a first-year Shift, but ever since I replaced the problem AFD with a newer one and learned how to adjust the AFD for most positive engagement they've been bomber. I wouldn't run them on a rock hard race course, but other than that they're up to the job IME. It's really impressive that Ross Tester can drop FWT faces on Duke PTs, and maybe he wouldn't be able to on Shifts (if Salomon sponsored him), but that's not relevant to most folks.

I have shifts on my JJ UL’s and they’ve been really great. Like you said, I’m primarily alpine/resort skiing with a sprinkle of touring. I do like the different color rocker switch-a-roo on the new one. Separates the different components.

I wonder if that new AFD is like on the Cast Freetour, where you get a different one for each of three main types of boot sole

release date? don't know if I should hold out for these or try. toget my hands on a look pivot 15 / cast freetour system

You should check out the Fritschi Tecton bindings, I love mine. Great release and decently light.

Yes! I have Shifts on a couple pairs of skis that I want to be able to use with both alpine and touring boots, but my "touring chargers" (195 cm G3 SENDr) are set up with Tectons. They have toe elasticity and alpine-like lateral toe release, an alpine-style heel, and they're significantly lighter than the Shift. If you're willing to commit to touring boots 100% of the time then they're a terrific option. I've ridden those SENDrs+Tectons all day in the resort (with Lange XT3 140s) and they held up really well.

what bindings do you have one those 108's back there?

Hopefully they update the European customer service, My gen 2 shift had a malfunction on it's second use... an easy fix if they would just send me the part.... but they insist that I take the binding to a certified Salomon retailer to have a diagnosis, and then they can only order the part....5 year warranty....right, 5 years of hoops to jump through

I’m new to skiing having been a life long snowboarder and man skiing gear controversy is insane. Every skier I talk too has completely different opinions on what I need 😂. I want to go downhill 90% of my time with the ability to tour a little bit. The cast system seems to offer the best performance but I don’t want to carry or switch out the toe pieces. Any ideas?

The Shift is a really good binding IMO. The AFD setup is a little tricky but easy enough to learn, assuming you need to be adjusting your own binding for multiple pairs of boots with different sole types. If not then you can just get a competent tech to dial it in for you once. Also if you do manage to wear out an AFD they're like $20 each (I'm 100 kg and a fairly aggressive ex-racer, and I managed to induce "unfixable clicking" in one of the early-production ones that he mentions in the video). The brakes can pop out in touring mode, but IME that mostly happens to people who slam their skis together or otherwise subject those to sharp impacts in touring mode. They hold up adequately to impacts in skiing mode, and it's never been a problem for me. If you're dropping massive cliffs then by all means get the CAST system or the Marker PT, but neither of those was worth the hassle for me. Also, separate skis for resort and BC is generally a _really_ good idea.

User abuse was the main problem.

The Shift is a revolutionary product. I have a gen1 that I've also used for around 100 ski days and have had no problems with it. Looking forward to this improved version.

I think they’re a great binding. I had two toe pieces replaced but that was easy and over a lot of days of alpine and touring and two separate pairs. Fritschi Tectons are probably my favorite but hard to find someone that sells and mounts in New England. Full tech bindings, hard snow, lift served is just awful so horses for courses when choosing the Shift. Improve the reliability and I think Shift will dominate that crossover binding slot.

Can I use the old holes on my skis from the old shift , to mount the new shift ?

@@ChickenKhorma ok so no to the old shift mount holes and yes to new mounting pattern holes = no using the old holes .

Biggest issue in my experience is the toe NOT locking out for tour mode. I've been on hut trips with guys who had to take their skis back to the hut pour hot water over the toe piece to get it to lock out in tour mode. BTW, i believe the Dynafit Rotation is another great option.

I would argue that if you are staying in a hut then you are using Shift bindings in a manner they are not designed for. They are for day tours, for the person that does a bit (say up to two hours) of skinning to access some fresh powder, not for someone doing a full on tour, for which you should get a full on touring binding.
