Leading in the VUCA world - How the Armed Forces do it | RAGHU RAMAN | TEDxIITBHU

Military and chaos are the two flipping sides of the same coin.
Raghu Raman, former CEO of the Indian National Intelligence
Grid apprises about how planning undertaken by the elite
forces during peacetime aids in bringing the worst of chaotic
situations such as a terrorist attack to order. His belief in an
Indian soldier's momentous decisiveness when in crisis and
strategic preparation when the need be is what he talks about.
Raghu Raman was the former CEO of National Intelligence Grid(India).
Raman joined the Indian Military Academy in 1986.He then left
the army and went on to become the chief of operations of
Mahindra Group’s used car business. Later in 2000, he shifted to
the Mahindra Special Services Group before taking over as the
CEO of the joint venture between Mahindra and British
Aerospace, Mahindra Defence Land System, in 2009.
Raman teaches "leadership" at business schools such as the
Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, Welingkar Institute of
Management Development & Research, Mumbai, and several
other institutes.

I respectfully disagree with his opinion because, when a soldier looses his life protecting his country and his countrynen, or protecting his team mates, he is doing his duty. Protecting his country is his duty. Sacrificing his life while doing his national duty isn't a mistake right?

@@riyadebnath2203you got it wrong,he was referring to a 'mistake' done in a combat situations ie. face to face encounter with a terrorists or enemy,in situations like these a single decision can cause death to an officer and his troops and there are no second chances

Principles for battle to thrive in chaos 1. Know how to assume orders, when there are no orders - understand strategic intent. 11:22 2. Every leader should be capable of commanding 1 level up - Train well to command 1 level up 12:07 3. Focus on you core drills and battle procedures until they become muscle memory 12:34 4. Improvisation and Innovation on the fly 14:26 5. Leaders must always be out there in the front line - Chaos is full of fleeting opportunities 16:55 6. Good leaders love chaos - core drills, courage, attitude, can do attitude come out in chaos only 18:01

Nice comment Kaushik. Generally, you will find a top Indian Army Office with bag loads of confidence. My classmate is a Col in the Indian Army. He once shared a story about their final weeks of their IMA training. One of the last weeks before course ends, i.e. before a 60kms run, all course-mates are not allowed to sleep, dig trenches, stand next to the trenches, dig again, eat and drink little (no sleep). Those 6 days before the run, all are pretty much done with the hectic routine, and then they are airlifted and dropped 60 kms away and handed a map (around evening time). The navigator navigates his course mates, loaded with battle gear, have to run those 60kms in 8 hours and negotiate way back to base. With major lack of sleep and barely enough water with you, you run and make way to base, with sheer grit and determination. After you successfully reach, you are allowed to rest and eat. This may sound over simplified, but this is very difficult. And then the warriors say, after you have done this, ''anne do kisiko bhi, g**nd mar denge''.
