Great book, it actually made me cry as it goes to the core of what we really want / need as humans

The lack of meaningful impact and collaboration towards a common goal is the cause of anxiety. We ask ourselves constantly "what's next, when, who needs me, with whom do I do it with, who is joining me on this quest of life?" The most difficult thing for a human is to be with oneself without belief of ones impact. We crave for control. And yes "I don't like this so I don't do this" is also an act of craving control. Collaboration and trust is a result after you solve the cause. And don't ridicule others. We are all human, so we all have this need. We just express it differently. Some ways are just socially acceptable in your culture and others are not. Misunderstanding this causes us to be blind to that need and think some people are healthier than they are. You know the smiling friend or a peer who ends their life "unexpectedly". We were blind. Is our cultural norms optimal when in order to feel better ourselves we prefer mostly those who force down feelings and lose transparency about who they are? Do we ask ourselves "why do I prefer them to share only good things?" We increase the need for more control. We build ourselves up for a breakdown.

Practically speaking, it seems like this requires initiating or building a structure to hold community in a way that is atypical to western culture. I’m curious if anyone has any recommendations or success stories.

I bothered to get this guy's book, TRIBE, on Audible but returned it because how disappointing it was. Though he starts off with a disclaimer on how his use of certain terms are very controversial, such as referring to Indigenous Native Americans as "Indians", I just couldn't get past how he nonetheless disregarded the significantly negative connotations this slur has. I guess it's easy to justify such language when the writer himself is from an affluent, suburban New England upbringing. Yes, very disappointing indeed.

@@simtill "loss" would imply a sense of competition. Your mistake. 😉
