As others have mentioned, Lea has drifted into different accents depending on her interview. You can definitely find some with British accents. Many interviews she gives in the Philippines are in English or partly in English and you hear more of a Filipino accent. But in most American interviews you can barely hear her Filipino accent.

Lea Salonga and her brother Gerard both studied in International School in the Philippines as in beginning of their schooling. Only those wealthy families can enroll their kids in that school. They are learning different languages as well and English ( american/british english) is the medium.of teaching

The caliber of Lea Salonga is much more different from that of Regine Velasquez as a singer or as a total performer. Lea is a musical theater actress/singer who is world-class and has been recognized with her many awards from West End (Olivier, Desk, and Tony for Broadway, Disney World Legend, Philippine National Medals/Awards for Arts given by two past Philippine presidents and many more recognitions. Just waiting for her to be voted as a National Artist (the most distinguished Philippine title). She is a living legend, an icon, and a world-renown musical artist. Being the voice of two Disney Princess is a no-mean feat; it's extraordinary (for Alladin and Mulan). Ovela, you should watch MV of the classic musicale of "The King and I" Hollywood Recording Album (I think it was in 1993) where Lea recorded together with Julie Andrews as "Anna", Ben Kingsley as the Thai King, Marilyn Horne (Lady Thang) and Peabo Bryson (as Lun Tha) and Lea Salonga as "Tuptim". Her song, "My Lord and Master" and her duet with Peabo Bryson were mere perfection. I've watched the movie "The King and I" twice and loved it so much. You should research and watch it. She's simply an amazing talent!

Lea Salonga is a living treasure of the Philippines. There's no one else like her. At the age of 6, she went to Repertory Philippines (REP), the most prestigious theater company in the Philippines, and got her first major role, at the age of 8, as Annie for The King and I. She was also a teen star appearing in ads, magazines, TV shows and movies in the 80s. She was 17 years old when she auditioned for Miss Saigon. It was indeed a proud moment for the Philippines when she got the lead role as Kim. She bagged all the awards for this role in one season (GRAND SLAM) Best Leading actress in a Musical for Miss Saigon and that includes Laurence Olivier (which is for West End), and for Broadway Tony, Drama Desk, Critics circle and one of the most difficult to achieved in Broadway. Theater World awards. and because she is awarded by DISNEY as a DISNEY LEGEND . One of the perks is She can go to any Disneyland for FREE anytime she wants. AMAZING hahaha

I can say nobody from the Filipino artists that we have before and until now surpassed Lea Salonga's achievements. She's a world class singer, she won the Tony awards that no one can imagine that Filipino can achieved that but only does Lea Salonga is. We know Regine is a good singer too but Lea is exceptional, Filipinos have high respect for her because she gave honor to the Philippines and it's our pride, she is THE REAL QUEEN.

Behind that... The director said that Philippines was their last destination. They weren't expecting to find anyone. They've come back to cast every international production since. Until LEA came. Lea Salonga really has an angelic voice, that's why of all auditionees, she has been chosen to play the lead role. PASSION. HEART. LEGEND. = LEA SALONGA 👑💛😘

I observe that whenever she's in the UK for interviews, she somewhat has a British accent. It goes the same when she's in Australia and the US. And when in her home country, that posh Filipino English is evident.

Not just Jasmine. Mulan too. Lea was the original singer of Reflection.

Ms.Lea Salonga can read notes perfectly, that's why it was easy for her to memorize the runs quickly. And, also she practiced that "british accent." And, she's also very very smart, if you only knew how many times she tops their class, and lots of awards she got way back. That's why we FILIPINOS considered her as the only precious gem of the Philippines who proved the Americans that Asian people can definitely sing! Yes we have lots of prides, but she's the only precious among them. Ask the Filipinos. 😉✊

Notice the change in their facial expression from 4:51 to 6:19. It's when they realized that they finally found the perfect girl to play Kim after going around the world to search for her.

Kindly note that she's also the Voice of Mulan (Reflection) so proud of her😍

She was 17 here. I'm gonna keep on repeating this until the "gods of fortune" hear it, she deserves the National Artist award. She is a national treasure. If I'm not mistaken, this clip is a part of a longer documentary of how the creators of Miss Saigon found the cast.

Correction, Lea is a Broadway/ Disney Queen and worldclass singer while Regine is Asia's songbird. You cannot compare the two because they are both great but they have different music category. Lea said in an interview that she has a great set of ears and happen to blend in wherever she is and that was not intentionally. Lea is not just talented but very smart. Studying Biology and decided to be a doctor but Miss Saigon happened. And accent can be contagious. I also saw her partying using a Filipino accent as well.

She is originating a role.. a new musical after a blockbuster Les Miserables so you really have to document stuff like this especially if you know it'll be a big hit. It's actually an hour long or more video of this "Making of Miss Saigon" which they also release in a dvd.

For me Lea Salonga no.1 . All her accomplishments and awards and recognized worldwide!!!

Because she was studying at a very exclusive school in Manila at that time when she auditioned for Miss Saigon.

Lea was 17 when she auditioned for a role in Miss Saigon in 1988. She was 18 when the show opened in West End, London.

It is your opinion Ovela and I respect that. Actually, the pinky’s respect that. We also thank you for reacting to pinoy musicians and artists. Actually,her accent changes depending who she talks to. She was at least 17 or 18 during the audition. It was her first time to learn the song that time. . BTW, for me, the Lea Salonga is the queen of all the Philippine singers. She sings songs from Broadway, opera, modern, pop, rock (in her own version), R&B. She can belt out the opera way. Regina sings. Modern pop, pop rock, several broadway songs (in a belting voice which isn’t acceptable in Broadway or West End.).

She is actually the singing voice of 2 Disney princess! Both princess jasmine of alladin and Mulan! She was awarded the title of a Disney Legend by Disney!

Lea was 17 at that time. And she actually grew up on stage and was a part of Repertory Philippines which became the training ground of most stage actors in the Philippines.

My friend, I just want to make a little correction, Leah was 1st known since her childhood, before Regine was discovered in singing contest! The only difference is that Leah stayed being a miss Saigon, while do some recordings that makes her popular

She definitely worked hard to achieve that singing voice. She wasn’t that gifted in singing as a kid as one could imagine, but she has developed to become a legendary musical theatre singer and I respect her even more for that. So I kinda disagree on the comment that she was “destined” to become a musical theatre legend, in a sense that she worked hard for it, like she wasn’t bestowed with that singing voice like how some gifted kids are in talent shows.

In MY OPINION, yeah she could sing when she was a kid but I’m gonna keep it a hundred - it wasn’t like, oh, she was a freak of nature with natural vibrato, rich voice, pitch, could hold a note, and whatnot, the qualities of what one would expect from a good singer, even from kids, which is definitely more than hitting the right notes. Nobody said she was not talented at all. I said she was not AS gifted as we imagine or think and to account most of it for talent and gift implicitly discounts one’s hard work.

@@jesssc402 How old are you dear? Were you already in this world when Lea was starting? I am a year younger than Lea so I was actually able to witness her career during her younger days. She was BIG - the BEST child singer in the Philippines during the 70's. Everyone in my school knew by heart her hit song 'I Am But a Small Voice' since it was being taught in class. She was the poster girl for Banco Filipino (the biggest Philippine bank that time) and Sanrio and people would flock to any event she was in. People waited in long lines (me included) just to have her autograph in one of the Sanrio events held at Fiesta Carnival in Cubao. I also had the chance to see her perform live as one of the Von Trapp children in Repertory Philippines' production of the 'Sound of Music' at the Meralco theater and the show was packed! If she really wasn't that 'good' (like what you are trying to insist) then no one would even bother to see her shows! 'Birit' and R&B songs were not a thing during that time, you see. Ballads and mellow songs ruled that era (Carpenters, James Taylor, John Denver, Dan Fogelberg, Don McLean, Carole King....do they ring a bell?) and Lea's beautiful and soothing angelic voice fitted perfectly well!

She's a legend sir, and really known worlwide. She started singing young.

Lea started theater and singing at a very young age. some of her roles in Repertory Philippines required her to have a British or New York accent hence she is very versed with this.

I have heard so many foreigners who said that Filipinos have a gift when it comes to language. Because we are a multi-lingual nation, with great influences of the Spanish, American, Chinese, Japenese, and Southeast Asian influences, it very easy for us to adapt and learn languages and even accents. In one of the interviews of Lea that I watched a long time ago during her Miss Saigon days, she was asked to speak in a British accent. When she did, a guest commented that when you bring her in a certain nation, just give her two weeks and she can speak with the right accent of that nation. I guess that is really a gift of many Filipinos. I have many Filipino missionary friends in many parts of the world. They speak the language with the right accent after only a short time.
