At the 1981 Le Mans they were right at the back of the grid. They were almost two seconds slower than the second to last car, an antiquated Morgan Plus 8 using a naturally aspirated version of the Rover V8.

A great British venture that was doomed to fail. I saw this car at the Goodwood of speed.

Actually the car did qualify although there were problems with the gearbox and vibration. The qualifying session was partly wet, partly dry and the French organisers said they would except the best time irrespective of the conditions. Then, with no warning after the session had finished, they said it had to be an aggregate of wet and dry hence knocking the TR and quite a few others out. The rumour was that they did it to ensure certain other French cars did qulify which wouldn't have otherwise. The meeting in the stewards hut was acrimonious to say the least. Some entrtants were in tears others were threatening to fill in the stewards! That said the car was underdeveloped, not the least because BL gave no supprot and even tried to stop it. It would probably not have finished. If it hadn't been for the efforts of certain peolpe from the TR Register it would never have even got there. I almost bought it some years back but in the end it went to a chap from Belgium but has now come back to UK and hopefully will be seen on the hills or circuits soon.

This car was _32 seconds_ slower than the next Group 5 private entry. Derek Bell (the 1975 Le Mans winner) tested the car and found it to be "hopeless". Even 500hp under the hood wasn't enough to give the car any form of competitive edge. The TR7 and TR8 were dog ugly, sluggish, didn't corner, didn't brake, unreliable and totally boring.

Ian Rivlin not a fan then? :). I did love my two previous TR7s...... that said, now a tr3a and it is far better looking, but at the moment, less reliable

@@davidm793 they were utter shite, rusted within six months, Kellogg cornflakes box cardboard used for the door cards, the engine was a bucket of nails too and as for the suspension! under engineered doesn't describe this heap well enough! this era of British motor engineering (& motorcycle manufacturing) epitomises everything that was wrong with U.K. in the seventies, so glad BL, BLMC and Rover group hit the wall! Viva Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Porsche, Mercedes, Citroen Peugeot et al! Only one worse British built "car" and that was the rusty old wheelbarrow made in Wales and called "Gilbern" now that was utter shite too!

@@crozwayne Bollocks - it was praised by most motoring journalists at the time it came out. Yes build quality was crap when it was built at Speke but the did improve. I've raced and rallied them for years very competitively. The suspension is basically the same as a Ford Escort which no one says is underengineered! With the V8 installed they go like s**t I currently own a 3.9 V8 roadster and its fantastic. A very underated car and those that survive these days (because they haven't dissolved like most cars of that era) are appreciating fast.
