This has reminded me that I have a sick Dell LCD that likely needs bad caps replaced. I should get on that.

The list of things to repair never ends, then again if it did, what would we do with ourselves?

Hi Sawickipedia --- I was glad to find this video. The power supply board for my LCD TV has (I think) a damaged varistor with an obscure part number (5D 218 G F). I haven't had any luck finding it on the web. Can you offer any advice about range of specs for a component like this?

Yeah, varistors can be painful to identify. It sounds like the 5D may indicate the diameter, is it around 5mm in size? The second figure is usually the voltage rating, so 218V? Last two letters really depend on the manufacturer. If there's a logo on it, try and match that up to a manufacturer and then hopefully you can find more info on it

Wish I had seen this before I got rid of my last tv, but I'm working on a power unit for a different appliance and the small lcd screen doesn't turn on. It has a cracked veristor but it's not blue it's black. Can I replace it with a similar blue one or is it even a veristor? TIA

If its the same shape then the black would usually mean a metal oxide varistor (MOV) and you can usually determine the appropriate replacement by using mouser or allied electronics if you can read any markings off of it

What is the new varistor Name?

I have a varistor 471-14. How do I know if it’s bad? What can I buy to replace it with?

If you suspect that it's bad then it's probably just safer to replace it. It sounds like a 470v, but a quick google of the part number should confirm it for you

@@ReynaldoOchoa You can measure the resistance to tell if they're bad or not. They should read very high - almost infinite resistance if they're still good. But you cannot tell much else spec wise with a multimeter AFAIK
