LCBO strike to begin Friday involving 9,000 workers at Ontario liquor retailer | FULL

The union representing LCBO workers at Ontario's main liquor retailer said in Toronto, Ont., on Thursday evening that more than 9,000 workers will strike as of 12:01 a.m. on Friday, after a deal could not be reached during the bargaining process.
“LCBO workers are ready to make history,” said Colleen MacLeod, chair of the OPSEU/SEFPO Liquor Board Employees Division. “Tonight, Ford's dry summer begins.”
“Good employers invest in their employees, but good governments invest in their province. The LCBO, however, has rejected our vision for the future of the LCBO and refused to propose a better way forward to keep it public, and for its happy to give away Ontario's crown jewel,” said OPSEU/SEFPO president JP Hornick.
Previously, the LCBO has said that if a strike takes place, all locations will close for 14 days and if the strike continues after that point, the Crown corporation will open 30 stores three days a week with limited hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. In a statement, it also said that the LCBO will continue operating its online retail services, though what customers can purchase may be limited.

More competition in the market is needed - this is the foundation of modern economy. We don't know if workers (or their CEOs) are paid fairly if there's only one chain store is allowed in the market. More players should be introduced in this market - and this doesn't go against the public revenue. Government can always tax all liquor sellers (including LCBO and other new players). Actually the public revenue can even increase because of the competitions. As competition will force LCBO (and alike) to improve their operations, therefore making more profits, good for all.

The current Ontario government has shown a tendency towards privatization and contracting out services. This approach has been evident in various sectors, including healthcare and education. The Ford government has had a contentious relationship with labor unions, frequently engaging in disputes and pushing for cost-cutting measures that unions argue undermine workers' rights and conditions. Given this history, the LCBO workers might indeed have concerns about job security and the possibility of their roles being contracted out. The government's track record suggests a likelihood of pursuing privatization as a cost-saving measure, which could affect the job stability of LCBO employees. Overall, while the specifics of any negotiations or strike actions will play out in real-time, the LCBO staff have valid reasons to be cautious and proactive in safeguarding their interests.

@@rafial81let's get real. Privatization benefits the one percenters, not the average citizen. The push to privatize the LCBO or healthcare isn't about improving services-it's about lining the pockets of the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Canada doesn't need MAGA-style morons pushing an agenda that prioritizes profit over public good. The LCBO isn't a monopoly; it's a public service that ensures safety and generates revenue for the province. Privatization would likely lead to job cuts, reduced wages, and worse working conditions for employees-all while making alcohol more accessible, potentially increasing social issues. And about healthcare-yes, it's not perfect, but privatizing it would create a two-tier system where only the wealthy get top-notch care. Publicly funded healthcare ensures everyone gets access, regardless of their financial situation. So let's stop pretending that privatization is some magic fix. It's a ploy to enrich the already wealthy, leaving the rest of us to deal with the fallout.

  • @Progressive_Canadian

@rafial81, your ignorance is astounding. The LCBO isn't some evil monopoly; it's a regulated public service that ensures alcohol is sold safely and responsibly, while also pumping revenue back into public services we all use. Privatizing it would only line the pockets of the wealthy while screwing over workers and consumers. Unions aren't about profit-they're about protecting workers from the corporate greed that privatization brings. You really think the free market is going to give you better prices and accessibility? No, it'll give you higher prices, worse working conditions, and more corporate control. And don't even start with your nonsense about other drugs. The legalization of cannabis was about regulation and harm reduction, not the free-for-all you want to paint it as. It's funny how you conveniently ignore the social and safety benefits of these regulations. Privatization is a scam that benefits the one percent and leaves the rest of us worse off. It's time to wake up and realize that these so-called "free market" solutions are just another way for the rich to get richer while the rest of us suffer.

Why should they have job security. There are many people who have jobs that don't have security. Fire their a$$ is what I say and put the booze in the stores where cheap labor can push buttons to sell booze.

@@goldiegirl6705 your callous disregard for workers' rights is exactly what's wrong with this mindset. Job security isn't some luxury-it's a basic right that ensures people can live with dignity. Saying "fire their a$$" shows a complete lack of understanding or empathy for the people who make our society function. Privatizing LCBO jobs to replace them with "cheap labor" just to save a few bucks undermines the quality and safety of service, not to mention it devalues the hard work these employees put in. The LCBO isn’t just about selling booze-it’s about regulated, responsible sales that also generate revenue for public services. Throwing workers under the bus for the sake of privatization only benefits the rich, leaving everyday people to deal with the consequences. Maybe it's time to think beyond your wallet and consider the broader impacts of such short-sighted policies.

The union leadership has been too complacent for too long. While Doug Ford's right-wing government and its privatization agenda definitely deserve criticism, union leaders should have been more proactive in protecting their workers' rights. They allowed the situation to deteriorate to the point where 70% of LCBO staff are now part-time. If the union leaders had been more vigilant and fought harder against these contract changes from the start, the workers wouldn't be in such a precarious position. Bringing back term limits for union executives could help ensure that leaders remain accountable and focused on their members' best interests. The workers deserve better from both their government and their unions.

@@christinahaddrell2110 I have a level of training that's far beyond anything that you find at Walmart. First of all they're actually trained to help you make selections. Walmart it's all about "it's over there". Beyond that they're actually trained to make sure that people who are purchasing are in the right frame of mind and also state of being. In other words as I'm sure you're aware you can't serve someone who is intoxicated, or under age, or several other reasons. But hey I'll bet you're the kind of guy that thinks balls like that are just there too inconvenient to you when you're having a good time. By the way when was the last time you heard of a Walmart employee being charged because somebody got behind the wheel when they shouldn't? I don't know about your job but I've never been concerned that I'd end up in court because of something I did at work. Anyways that's a few reasons that I know that they're different. I'm sure an actual LCBO employee would tell you so many more.

Normally, I am not in favour of strikes. But I Am in favour of the LCBO strike. Not Only does the LCBO employ Canadians, Not Only does the LCBO contribute Heavily to public coffers all throughout Canada; But the LCBO is chief in denying alcohol to underage children. Anyone who has ever worked in a corner store knows that there are a lot of thefts by children between the ages of 10 to 13 years old. Only under Ford's proposal, instead of being limited to candy bars, or sandwiches, or a can of pop; Now little Johnny or Jenny can nick booze. When your little kid runs down to the corner store near their school, gets drunk, and decides to stagger out into oncoming traffic, Thank Doug Ford for that! Protect Canada, protect the economy, and Most of all, Protect Your Children. Support the LCBO and their strike. Shut down Doug Ford's proposal! Help keep booze out of the hands of little kids.
