Layers of the Earth-What are they? How were they found? (Educational)

How do we know what is deep inside the Earth? And who discovered it?
The Earth has 3 main layers based on chemical composition: crust, mantle, and core. Other layers are defined by physical characteristics due to pressure and temperature changes. This animation tells how the layers were discovered, what the layers are, and a bit about how the crust differs from the tectonic (lithospheric) plates, a distinction confused by many.

That the earth is round has been known at least since 600 BC. Columbus didn't argue that it was round (nobody doubted that in 1492), he argued that it was small enough for the ocean separating Spain from China to be traversable in a reasonable time.

is outer mantle solid nature or liquid nature
@Argacyan
3 жыл бұрын
If we want to be really accurate, it is neither. The lithosphere is solid if observed over a short period, but ultimately the asthenosphere and the upper mantle in general behave is a sort of ductile, plastic or viscous manner.
What if the core and the mentle have different un-named material ? They are just 'theory'... And you teach them in schools like those are absolute truth. (Nice animation though..)
@robindscarlet9805

@ArtyumR Thanks for the info. Yes. But the students should be told that these are 'Theories' . I don't know about other schools and teachers but in my school they used to teach us like those are all absolute truths!

hey iris person, geologists believe the outer core to be liquid because s-waves dont travel through it. My question is how do they know the outer core isnt gas as s waves also dont travel through gas. Also , high presuure doesnt always equate to a subtance turning to solid so how do they know the inner core isnt gas.
@Lvl18Meep
6 жыл бұрын
Density. Very few gasses are more dense than water and the mantle comprised mostly of oxygen, silicone, and magnesium would be significantly more dense than water. Also those gases would have to be so pressurized and so cold that it wouldnt make sense to be in the core. Also it depends on what gas youre talking about, but the pressure of the core would definitely make most anything solid and if not by pressure then it would chemically react with something to make a solid (Silicon Dioxide is rock which is most of the crust and mantle).
THIS IS SO SIMPLE
Very informative but omg geology is boring

Yet again, people think Christopher Columbus proved the Earth wasn't flat. Research your info before making a fool of yourself.
@IRISEarthquakeScience
7 жыл бұрын
This animation does not say that Christopher Columbus proved the world was flat. It says that at that time, in the 1400's, much of the world had accepted that already was a sphere. More than 5,000 years before Columbus scientist-philosophers had determined that the earth was a sphere. However, there were many, during the Middle Ages who did not believe it. Most did. Columbus not only believed that it was a sphere, he proposed he could reach India by sailing west. That's what was new.
