Layering your fall food plots 2023-my complete process & why I do it

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I never plant 'no till' or 'throw and grow' fall food plots for deer, and in today's full food plot planting process you will learn why (Not saying it's a bad thing at all, but I prefer to maximize my chances of having a great fall food plot instead of relying solely on getting some lucky rain at the very right time).
In today's episode we will plant 2 brand new fall food plots for deer; one perennial and one annual. I will take you through the entire process from start to finish and explain why I prefer to plant my fall food plots with this very specific method, even though it does take additional time and add some additional steps. Join me in the field on our Southern Illinois farm as I take out the Kioti RX7320 and my home made chisel disc harrow and my Can Am Outlander XT850 ATV and knock out 2 food plots in short order! Oh and here is the link to Whitetail Food Plots USA, (the food plot seed blends I'll be planting today) they make some great food plot seed mixes you won't be disappointed: whitetailfoodplotsusa.co/
Thanks for joining me today and best wishes to all of you guys and gals that are or will be planting your fall food plots for deer 2023!

Looks like you may have had the same problem I had with the same fertilizer. I had large chunks in it that didn't get pelletized and would reduce the flow when trying to broadcast, it was driving me crazy. Next time I'll try running through a screen first, because it caused a lot of issues.

yep I had to reach down in the bin to crunch up the clumps. But it was do able. We just got a good soaker this morning! 8/27.

Fingers crossed on the early planting you are doing. According to my records the last 2 weeks of august last year was totally dry and very hot. Looks like a repeat for this year. There was finally 3/4" of rain the last day of the month. September continued to be dry and hot also. I'm going to wait for this upcoming heat dome to pass on by and for the next good chance of precep to plant my fall plots.

Yeah I'm going to be waiting on pins and needles I had a very icky feeling planting them this early but that ground is super saturated so myself and all the other guys that planted early are hoping that it stays wet enough in the ground to survive some heat till the next rain, but only time will tell

Hopefully there was ample moisture in the soil for good germination of your plots.

Well the moisture came very late in the season! But at least they are in half way decent shape now! Thanks

I hate to say it, but the heat is heading your way. It's like a broken record here, 110° or so most days. The end is in sight though, if I can make it!

Man there's no doubt I'm waiting on pins and needles it has this icky feeling in my stomach planting all of these plots in mid august! But like a lot of the other guys who planted as well the plan was to get them in that really moister and get them germinated and strong enough until the next rain. I'll be waiting with bated breath t🤕🤕

What about packing small seed with the drag harrow with the teeth up

Not really a good idea. It even says right on Paul's seed bags 'do not drag.' Couple reasons; A you could bury the seeds too deep, and B you can actually destroy the seeds, as they are a living organism. Better off to just broadcast the small seed and pray for rain. Not saying you can't do it though, but those are the risks. Or better to broadcast small seed and just roll over it with an ATV or something. Hope that makes sense, thanks.

Would using the big disc on its own on the first pass not have saved you some of the subsequent passes with the chisel disc 🤔👍

I don't really think so because the Chisel disc Cuts sod better than that big one on the first pass. Not to mention the time trying to swap them back and forth running back up to the barn probably wouldn't have negated any productivity increase. That's my guess

@@kapperoutdoors Did you try getting the drill at the CO-OP in town, from what I heard, it's only like $10ac. use fee?

@@modkartracer3358 No I've used that one before and it is a beast of a planter. I was going to use Curtis' drill but then his truck went down for several weeks so there was not a easy way of getting it over to our farm to use. This heat wave now sucks..
