Talking about recognizing plane registrations, obviously I've never been in a plane crash, but I've been on a plane that LATER crashed. If you're willing to read my long story, here it is: I'm from Brazil, and in late 1978 I was 17 years old and lived with my mom. We went on vacation to Chile and caught a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Santiago. It was a Varig Boeing 707, and that day we didn't use the jet bridges, boarding in a remote stand by bus from the terminal. So, I could read the registration clearly. It was *PP-VJK.* I don't normally notice plane registrations, let alone remember them, but that day I did, because the initials "JK" are very well known in Brazil and refer to late President Juscelino Kubitschek (much like "JFK" for John F. Kennedy or "LBJ" for Lyndon Johnson in the US). And I remember joking with my mom that we'd be flying on JK's plane. Fast forward to early 1987. I'm watching the TV news and they report that a Varig Boeing 707 had crashed shortly after takeoff from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on a flight to Rio, killing almost everyone on board. (Search for "Varig flight 797" for more details.) I jumped from the chair because I remembered that flight to Chile and the joke, and I knew I had flown on that plane years earlier! Chilling! 😬 For the record, that was perhaps the best flight in my entire life, because it was so wonderfully scenic (and the plane was relatively empty, and Varig's on-board service was top-notch, even in economy class). First the captain announced that we were overflying the majestic Iguassu waterfalls on the Brazil-Argentina border, and I could see the falls from above. Then there were the vast Argentine Pampa plain in different shades of green and brown, and hours later the incredibly beautiful overflight of the snow-capped Andes range, which separates Argentina from Chile. And then there was the approach to Santiago, which is too close to the towering Andes to allow a direct descent over the mountains. Today the approach path consists in crossing the Andes far north of Santiago and then gradually descending in a direct path south to the airport, but at that time planes overflew the mountains close to Santiago, then flew up to the Pacific Ocean and turned around to lose altitude and land. As the plane did so, since Chile is shaped like a very long and narrow ribbon, I could see the entire width of the country at once, from the Pacific coast to the highest peaks of the Andes, which mark the border with Argentina. It was really unforgettable! Little did I know the fate that plane would have years later... ☹

I always went to the airport to pick up or drop off my father. La Guardia had a great viewing area, many airports did. Now, you can't get that close to a commercial acft unless you work there or are bordering it. A great shame that we can't share with our kids what we were able to do. Many airports limit people at the fence too :-(

LAX is an interesting example. The terminal area is basically restrained from decisions made before most of all of us were even born. It's now a matter of being creative in squeezing more stuff into the same geographic space. There's a lot of building on top of one another to keep up with demand. Who knows what future improvements and additions are done once current construction and plans are complete. It's an airport where construction will never stop.

Ahh, the music, the titles' font, the clothes, the hairdos, the innocence... So 1970... When airports were still glamorous affairs. Hard to think the same while standing in line at Ryanair's check-in at Beauvais or Southwest's at Love Field dreading the next line at the security, to later be squeezed in minute torture chairs for hours while waiting for drill sergeants to do the very special favor to bring a glass of water...

@@tomservo56954, I don't know the proper name of that font, but actually, by the 1970s, when the MTM show was first aired, it was already falling out of use. It was much more common in the late 1960s, and if you ask somebody from that time, they're more likely to call it the "Barbarella" font, because it was made massively popular by the ads and posters of the iconic Roger Vadim film with his then-wife Jane Fonda.

Interesting to see how the plans worked out. Palmdale designed to be a massive international hub is today: Palmdale Regional Airport has a small airline terminal and a hangar. And VanNuys: Van Nuys Airport is a public airport in Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley section of the City of Los Angeles, California. *No major airlines* fly into this airport, which is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports.

If only I could go back in time with just enough evidence to convince the LAX airport planning board to bring some type of rail line into the airport while there was still space for it. Even now, they are just barely finishing a type of people mover…54 years later!

I just saw that Hartsfield/Jackson Airport in Atlanta was the busiest airport in the USA in 2015, it handled 855,000 aircraft and about 100 million passengers. O'Hare was just behind at about 850,000 planes. Those numbers are not hugely above what they were talking about for LAX in this video for 1970 and 1980. That would seem to speak to a maturing transportation system.

I'd say the only way airports are glamorous affairs now is if you're paying for it (getting into the lounges or flying international) otherwise LAX is a pretty beat up place these days. Palmdale never happened either. I will say though, in spite of the way it looks, it's still one efficient airport.
