Laws of Indices - Part 1 | Algebra | Maths | FuseSchool
Laws of Indices - Part 1 | Algebra | Maths | FuseSchool
The laws of indices make complex sums involving powers much easier to handle.
There are six laws we need to know and understand: how to multiply and divide with indices, raising a power to a power, what a power of 0 means, negative indices and fractional indices.
We will look at the first four laws in this video, and then will cover fractional and negative indices in a different video.
These are the first four laws of indices:
(1) When we multiply indices, we add the powers together, provided they have the same base number.
(2) When we divide indices, we subtract the powers. But again, the base number must be the same.
(3) When a power is raised to a power, we multiply the powers.
(4) Anything to the power of 0 is 1.

Its really helpful , the way you explain it :D
wouldnt question 5 in the questions you handed us to do have to use the rule of BODMAS, meaning you have to divide first before multiplying. REALLY HELPFUL LESSON THOUGH. truely appreciated.
@fuseschool
3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Glad you liked the lesson 🙂 You probably know that in BODMAS Divide and Multiply (same as Add and Subtract) rank equally, and go left to right. So if you have division and multiplication together and multiplication comes first (when you read from the left), you multiply first, and then divide.

for question c isnt it supposed to be 2w^7x^-3 ?
@fuseschool
6 жыл бұрын
Good question - they're the same thing. Looking just at the x^-3 part: As a denominator it is x^3 or you can make it a numerator (so everything on the same level) and have it as x^-3 2 w^7 x^-3 is the same as (2 w^7) / x^-3 Watch this video to learn about negative indices: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGiA3Mtql6nUlLA.html

excuse me, but, if the bases have to be the same for the multiplication and division rule, then why do you keep giving examples of instances with different bases and telling us to solve them?
