Lawrence Wong rounds up Budget 2023 debate in Parliament

Putting together Budget 2023 was a "delicate balancing act of finding that sweet spot", Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong told Parliament on Friday (Feb 24) as he rounded up the Budget debate.
He added that Singapore wants to get back to a more sustainable fiscal position but it cannot taper down support too quickly because the economic outlook remains uncertain. At the macro level, Budget 2023 is expansionary, providing some support for what is likely to be a weaker economy this year, he said
Mr Wong also addressed questions from MPs on whether the Government is taking too much and giving back too little, whether Singapore is staying competitive and helping businesses and workers sufficiently, and whether the Government is doing enough to help Singaporeans and households in need.

I noticed, When he recited back the passages, he somehow intentionally or what I don't know, but skipped the words "Will the HDB" and replaced with "So, With that". And that makes a lot of difference in a debate, because that important sentence is in a form of a question and not forming a conclusion. Therefore, this makes Leon Perera Shines in the Outcome of the debate IMO. I have to be neutral. Nevertheless, as the saying goes; What did old man say about to stand up to people telling your party to stop propagating falsehoods in Parliament or to "step down", something to the tune or can you remember old man the exact words? I want to laugh.

More needs to be done “The GST Voucher Schemes have an expiry date, while the GST increase itself does not. The 8% increase (and the 9% increase next year) will have to be borne by all Singaporeans, from the senior citizens to the baby in the womb. This is why RDU is against the increase of GST, especially at a time like this. We have explained in the past about how we can better use other revenue streams without increasing the GST.”

You know LMW is a good representative when every PAP MP or minister often cites LMW, despite only being a NCMP, in their speech. Singaporeans must rally behind an MP who will truly represents their interest in Parliament. Vote PSP. Do not trust LW. He claimed that middle income group is receiving more dollar benefits than they pay in taxes. If true, this is an illogical claim. It means that the PAP government is inefficient and deceitful in their tax collection and payment. It is simply more efficient to do away with taxes for groups who take in more than they pay in taxes. There might be potential corrupt activities involving the PAP government in dealing with public funds. In summary, do not trust PAP. Do not vote PAP. Deny LW his Premiership. He is not your PM. Vote opposition.

This year $123.7 billion Budget is not a small amount. It amount to $41,000 per person roughly if Singapore population is 3m. It is enough to pay some low income people their whole year salary. But many of us did not get $41,000 per person. It is going to increase inflation and a large amount of tax is need to pay the budget. Budget and fiscal discipline needed.

RDU also highlighted the need to strengthen key institutions with the core values of Fairness, Accountability, Integrity, and Transparency to build more resilient people, given the many uncertainties and risks that the world faces today. The party believes that a combination of funding, a skilled workforce, collaboration, infrastructure, and supportive regulatory environment is essential for the successful development of the R&D sector. RDU emphasized the need to set the right priorities to help families lower the cost of living, lower healthcare costs, improve education, create stable jobs, increase employees’ income, and help lower business costs such as rental and transportation. The party believes that the people will be better off and more resilient with other policy options that can help them, rather than relying only on Government support year after year to cope with inflation.

GST Tax in some cases, End Up Being More expensive than the VAT Tax example Contrary to the GST Tax, the VAT Tax is the amount of VAT the user pays is based on the cost of the product minus any costs of materials in the product that have already been taxed at a previous stage, from production to the point of sales. GST Tax could repeat the tax from production to the point of sales from raw materials, ingredients, rental cost, electricity, transports etc example multiplying effect type tax. There are 2 types of inflation. Inflation caused by "external factors" and Inflation cause by "GST Tax and the Carbon Tax". I hope Singaporeans can be informed. If you are in doubts, just compare with prices across the crossway.

Red Dot United While there were indeed many goodies for Singaporeans in the budget, RDU found that the measures announced in this budget came across as piecemeal and scattered solutions to complex and very serious problems facing Singaporeans and local businesses in the foreseeable future. RDU raised concerns about the impact of increasing grants to help young couples buy resale flats or secure BTO flats, as it may inflate housing demand, cause the prices of resale flats to rise further, and contribute to deforestation. RDU also noted that Budget 2023 did not go far enough in doing more to make the lives of Singaporeans better and to give more help for micro and small businesses, which are grappling with rising costs and struggling with GST hikes. The party asked if the $12 billion, which was not used from the drawdown of Past Reserves, the monies which the Government is not obliged to return, could have been used to delay the GST increase for 2-3 years.

So the Pertinent Question is; When the PAP said GST Hike will not hurt the poor, were they basing on the 1% hike OR the Overall multiplying effect on the Price? These days, its getting harder to trust anything they say.

Jamus Lim opined, “Singapore has many families with such contrasting stories. One of hope and opportunity, for a brighter future and the possibility of a promising career. Another of struggle and compromise, trying to make ends meet, to help fulfill the dreams of the other.” “My hope is that, as a society, we’ll continue to find it within ourselves to lend a helping hand to those with potential, so that they may uplift themselves and their families, and in doing so, make the Singapore we live in a better place.” On 1 January 2023, the GST hiked 1 per cent from 7 per cent to 8 per cent after the Singapore Parliament approved the tier-hiked 2 per cent with the People’s Action Party majority vote. The other 1 per cent hike will take place on 1 January 2024, raising the GST to 9 per cent. The GST hike has been opposed by WP MPs and the Non-constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) of the Progress Singapore Party. At the same time, IRAS has reminded businesses not to misrepresent the increase in prices by attributing it solely to the hike in GST.
