Philosophy major here. Debates are driven to produce a winner. True dialog, in which there is a thesis and an antithesis, produce a higher or greater understanding of the subject in question. Debates could be conducted in accord with the logical rules of inference and an astute moderator, knowledgeable in biases and fallacies in which points are deducted, refereeing the dialog or arguments, and thereby determining a winner. There are formal rules for every kind of game or contest. However, debate is one contest that needs more formal structure and fundamental modifications that, if studied and engaged in properly, would produce not only better debaters, but superlative thinkers as well.

The moderator has to be assertive and confident enough to simply cut off Trump's mic when his time is up. Otherwise, as Lawrence O'Donnell said "good luck with that". Choose a moderator that can control the debate and don't let Trump ramble. CUT THE MIC when his time is up! Don't get run over by Trump.
