Two phenomenal speakers. I'm a professor in biology at a mid sized university in Canada and regularly teach ecology. Sometimes I feel as Richard is one of the giant's whose shoulders I stand upon. I thought this such an excellent conversation and immensely enjoyed it. I can only aspire to the influence these two speakers have on society. Great job gentleman!

I ate Italian food with Lawrence Krauss. After he spoke at my college the honors program took him out to dinner. It was so much fun! We had a huge table in this tiny restaurant and split big portions of several different dishes. I still remember one of the professors insisting I take the leftover pasta home- she was so nice, I felt kind of bad when I forgot to eat it :) Aaaaah, memories. Also, he gave a great lecture! Evolution is so beautiful, it is sad some people choose not to understand it.

This is how you're supposed to have a conversational discussion ... no time allotment, no ad hominem arguments, no screaming matches, no mic's being cut off, no unnecessary interruptions, no sound bytes ... allow the fluidity of discourse to direct the flow of the speakers' conversation, so that a single topic is discussed at length to when all reasonable potential possibilities are exhausted and agreements on the conclusion are made before moving onto the next topic of conversation ...

Thanks Lawrence! I was at a bar recently when some on-call emergency helicopter pilot drunkenly dropped a snide remark at me, saying, "Oh, that's just what the world needs, more physical geographers," and I responded, "Just as the world needs more drunk pilots." I'm sick of having to justify the type of science I study.

While I cannot answer your second question, the equation E = Mc^2 means that energy is directly proportional to mass, the constant that makes them equal is the speed of light squared. Therefore the algebraic rearrangement M = E/C^2 is also correct.

I have to say, As a young kid, I was always been fascinated about science. I have a mother who is religious, and just let her believe what she wants to believe, because in my sense, religion should have a place of thought in a scale!! But when I have conversations with ppl about how evolution is real, and they insist it isn't thats when I take the phrase "ignorance is bliss" into play!!! Queens, NY Now I gotta run to Tisch!!! @Botie2 ... In my experience it is very often the case that there is a general acceptance of death/mortality in that it appears to be understood and the fear isn't the same. The bigger question underlying is why we are here; for what purpose can we be here...if any of course.

@seansalvador1 Yes. Debates, first and foremost, are meant to raise awareness or consciousness of certain issues and to discuss them. We discern truth from not when we do our own investigations, we read books and papers on the issue, then we weigh the evidence and come to a conclusion. I love debates for their ability to raise people's consciousness and get them to ask questions. I just wish more people did their research instead of shrugging things off and going back to religious doctrine.

(1/2) The "accidents" (called mutations) are very slight though. It doesn't mean something drastic or harmful, it could just mean that an individual is born with slightly longer legs than usual which allows it to run away from a predator better. That means it survives better than the shorter-legged normal ones and goes on to reproduce, and its babies are likely to inherit the longer legs.

@InnerFood "My point is that I would expect 50% wrong answers to yes o question when ALL people don't know the answer, just due to a even distribution of answers" That is only taking into account those who would simply randomly tick an answer, which is a very good example of 'skewing the statistics'. You are not taking into account those who would choose different answers for different reasons.

@Botie2 .. Hi B, There are a number of issues in your reply there. In my experience dealing with people dying, many are at ease when the time comes, almost as if the body or mind has an inherent relaxant making the actual passing easier. Does this come from nature or is it by faith or belief is hard to determine, all I see is the evidence.

This was one of the first (possibly the first) public discussion between Dawkins and Krauss. I thoroughly enjoy their discussions without the moderator but have noticed the evolution of Krauss's contribution. Of late I have noticed he interrupts RD to often and therefore doesn't let RD elaborate on his answer to questions. RD is a serious person and always wants to be clear and precise. He never used unnecessary terms or makes things more complicated than they need to be. LK sometimes tries to be funny (which is ok with me as I love humour) but I wish he wouldn't do it with RD. Other than that their discussions always fascinate me. It is staggering that in the year 2016 so many American people still believe in Bronze Age myths and superstition. It is a terrible indictment of the US educational system.

@thechessstick Punctuated equilibrium is not the same as the 'hopeful monster' hypothesis. In fact, it is entirely different! Punctuated equilibrium is a hypothesis as to the graduation of evolution, not another theory entirely! Also, you will note that in modern evolutionary synthesis, punctuated equilibrium AND the 'hopeful monster' hypothesis the fact that animals evolve is what they are all attempting to explain.

Not to mention all the positive work he is doing promoting rationality and reason over ancient scriptures and superstition. I don't always agree with what he says but when I don't, it's never about something I would consider significant. Just minor points here and there.

Yes I'm telling you that the kinds of cells are the same. If you were to take an individual human cell and an individual fish cell and look at them under the microscope you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. What's far more important is how those cells work together in organs and in systems. It makes much more sense when you understand the immensity of geological time that these processes have had time to work to create these huge differences.

@XGralgrathor But I didnt say either or did I? Just because the goverments limits the amount of fish you can fish, does not mean you cant fish at all. Look at Norway and Sweden. We have some of the strictest rules when it comes to how much fish for example we can fish, or how much we can polute. But yet, every single person in norway could have fish 5 days every week if they wanted to. Its not a question of either or, its a question of goverment limiting private industries destruction.

@DuTriDu This is highlighting the point; many people are willing to give up their lives to defend their country. There is an argument to say the 7-7 bombers in UK were acting in defence or striking back at the actions of UK and US in Iraq, so the question would be is this strictly a "religious driven" act?
