Lawn from Hell, Mower from Heaven, June 2016

Ғылым және технология

Mowing my steep (30 degrees) back yard hill after 30 years was becoming difficult because of ankle and knee stress and worsening balance. I built a lawn mower using 3 string trimmers, plywood, wheels, rope and a long extension cord so that I can now mow it from the top of the hill.

One of the most common comments is a statement that I should use a Ventrac/Ventrak or other brand of riding/stand-on mower. Some are polite/intelligent but others are rude or idiotic. Ventrak's website includes a page stating the maximum safe slope for its various models. Only one, its most expensive mower, modified to add dual wheels, is rated for 30 degrees. That mower, used, is over $20,000. Other manufacturers also give the maximum safe slope for their products. Several automated/slope mowers are rated for steeper hills. For example Husqvarna. I am unaware of any other stand-on or riding mower that the manufacturer believes is safe at 30 degrees. Many are rated below 15 degrees. If you can point me to a manufacturer's website or other reliable resource that says a product is safe at 30 degrees, please post it; I would love to know of it. Skip any comments that you "don't care about the rating because you have used it safely for years." I believe you but more strongly believe the manufacturer's rating. Sorry for my tone but I am tired of rude comments

It's typical KZread trolling. I swear some just troll for trolling sake. 93% thumbs up, so most viewers clearly appreciate you showing us what you made. I think you came up with the best low cost system possible to conquer that big steep lawn. I would try to make it remote controlled battery powered with cleats on the wheels for better traction, but that obviously would make it a good amount more expensive and time consuming to fabricate as well. Plus even the best batteries won't do that whole lawn in one go. Probably would be a real trick to get the right weight with the right wheels so it doesn't tear up the grass peeling out going uphill. But yeah, 30° is well beyond what practically any riding mower is capable of without tearing up the grass, and you definitely wouldn't want to try turning around on that grade. It could tip over.

I work for a professional landscape company in N.Y. we would put a zero on it...We do own two Steiner mowers with said dual wheel setups and I can say we go well over the manufacturers 30 degree limit lol. We go so far over the company sent out a representative to watch us do it...We use them to mow the steep side walls of the reservoirs in our area. I know my comment doesn't help u in anyway but I couldn't help myself

I’m an Australian, but touring England a few years ago, I observed a lot of very steep mowed hillsides around monuments. I thought this was because they used sheep or goats, but I was wrong, one day I saw a man mowing the steep hillside using a modified “Flymow” on a very long tether. He stood at the top of the slope and it swung from side to side like a pendulum!

I can't tell from the video how short it's doing the cut but it sure does the job! might be a little easier handling with an extension cord devoted and taped to the rope, roll easier on larger diameter wheels (does good now too!), is the only obvious stuff I see to maybe play with.

IN 1978 I went from Georgia where i live to Pennsylvaniar to visit my sister. On the way I tried a schortcut and wound up on a back road. A guy was cutting grass on a straight vertical slope about 20 feet high. He had a push mower attached with rope and lowering down the vertcal slope and it was working. Your video reminded me of that and the saying "Where there's a will there's a way"

when you were brainstorming ideas, did you consider the bottom portion of a push reel mower so the electricity isn't even needed? my steep hill is nowhere near this, so I got a $30 manual reel mower to push up and down so my tractor didn't butcher the ends and I didn't need to regrade the whole lawn... just trying to think of what could possibly be lighter than wood and weed wackers... what were all the ideas you considered?

A Ventrac would not tear up any turf when turning on hillsides... Mine never does, there is a video on KZread by Jack Wiley showing how well they turn without disturbing turf, the only downside to a Ventrac is the obvious ... initial cost... I agree he doesn’t need one his electric mower seems to do a great job for what he has in it .

I live near the old Olympia Beer brewery in Tumwater Washington. Years ago the lawn maintenance guy used to mow the steep lawns next to the Deschutes River by tying off a gas powered mower to ropes and doing the same thing. This was back in the stone age when mowers didn't have deadman switches on them.

A capstan setup is a powered slow-geared revolving spool that your rope would be wound around, probably once. When you wanted the mower to come back you just pull on the loose end of a rope and the rope tightens up on the spool and the spool does the pulling. Like on old ships handling cargo.

HEY! This is a great idea. Congrats on MANY levels. There are so many clever ideas out there just waiting form someone to think of them. I own 9 acres of flat land in Central Florida, and I don't really mind cutting it, but I've often considered using multiple (5+) Echo string heads powered by a small gas engine on a frame to construct a very light cutting machine. I don't need rock slinging steel blades. Sometimes smaller IS better. Its the same concept, as yours sir, except I would push it, or if big enough pull it behind a deck-less rider. SonOfDodie, you stepped outside of the box, and came up with a very useful gadget that solved YOUR problems. If 1% of the human race could step out of that box, and solve THEIR problems, AND share it on a video, perhaps we could undo the damage caused by Public Schoolz [sic]. Keep up the good work, and... THANKS FOR THINKING! Mr. Brown (57) Florida

I'm going to weed eat a 5 acre cemetery, and I'm excited about it because I've made brilliant (simple) mods to my weed eater... Mr Brown - - my apologies, as I had no intentions to offend. I was genuinely excited about the VID & the fact that both of you had come up with something important that could possibly help others. When I mentioned a collaboration, perhaps it was my naïveté to suggest that if one person creates something beneficial & someone else creates something equally as beneficial the two of them could possibly create something extraordinary. I most certainly was NOT trying to put anyone down here & again, I'm sorry if I came across as anything but positively excited. Have a good weekend Sir.

I really appreciate the effort and thought to value put into this mower. It looks great. I'm just wondering why a ride-on mower wouldn't do the trick? You said that there wasn't a mower that could do it but I don't think the hill is steep enough to not have any rider mowers be able to cut it easily. If you meant that there wasn't an affordable mower that could do it then I retract my statement.

Swimbait1 nah, there's plenty to be said about the beauty of a nicely manicured sloping lawn.... "Necessity is the Mother of Invention..." is a great quote, and is perfectly evident in this great video. Why spend thousands for a Ventrac mower when you can get a positive result with 3 household string trimmers and a wooden deck? The only thing I'd add is a dedicated pulley/track system to aid in uphill retrieval. Something other than ropes that can get tangled, frayed or cut. Great job, sonofdodie! You've really solved your backyard grading issue.

VM D. My hill is only about a quarter of an acre. My mower: $100; Ventrac: $20,000. Mine: about 3 square feet of floor space to store; Ventrac: 1/2 of a car stall. Mine: no gas; Ventrac: unknown amount of gas. Mine: a "handy" guy like me can build and maintain; Ventrac: pay for motor and other maintenance. Note that Ventac's lower priced version is only rated to 20 degrees. I'm sure Ventrac is a fine product (lots of recommendations in the replies) but if I bought one for my yard I would be either too rich or an idiot.
