Very informative, I’ve always been the number 1 player but no one ever told me what my job was.

Nev, I wish you would be back on with more videos as these have been excellent in showing myself as a beginner. My first year Pennants bowls and playing lead 4th division (there's even talk by our selector of moving me up a division next year - yikes). Things really improved after watching your vids on holding the bowl, rolling the Jack, this video for Leads and the Shooter Stance. Been practicing with my 4 bowls on 2 rinks - roll up jack and play 2 bowls to it (get within a foot or 2) and adjacent rink roll up another Jack and again play 2 bowls. I always make sure I hold my first bowl in my other hand when rolling up the Jack so only need to swap the bowl and ready to go with similar roll as the Jack to 'hopefully' get in the head. Doing this routine also makes it similar to a normal game (as much as practice can be), and means I get plenty of 'normal' practice rolling the Jack (I do change lengths for some variety). Also big concentration on playing through my 'aiming mark' and staying down until bowl is well away (not standing up to quickly). I've even got into the habit of taking a step or 2 forward after release to accentuate the staying down action.. The idea of a bowl being short (only a foot or less) made perfect sense to myself as can either be knocked up by team mates, or inadvertently by the other team who now have to get around it (or change hand). Why this isn't more standard rational I don't understand as I would think it would be for the 2nd or 3rd to put a back bowl if the head is covered with our team's bowls. Please come back on board with more videos as they really are great for a beginner (and others) 👍

Thanks Nev...fantastic videos. I'm pretty new but putting in 3 to 4 hours steady practise per day and coming along well. My old neighbour is a former NSW State credentialed coach and when he saw me experimenting with the shooters stance, he jumped up and down.."thats not how it's done. Feet together has been taught for years etc etc". Once I sat him down in front of the laptop and told him to actually watch (and listen), he saw the obvious advantages . Yesterday he was showing a couple of his pupils the new stance. Never too old to learn. Cheers.

I was watching a Tony Allcock video ('Tony Allcock's Art of Bowls Vol. 1 - Basics') where he played a couple of ends with his England team-mate Wynne Richards. They discussed the options of each bowl before they bowled them. I found this discussion to be immensely useful in trying to understand the game, the head and skills required. If you could do something similar over a few videos that would be awesome. Knowing WHICH shot to play is something I have great difficulty with and, for me, this would be greatly beneficial. Thanks.

Hi Nev. In the future can you please invest in a lapel mic as it is very hard to hear you. Great tutorials mate. Cheers

Love hearing the ideal shot being a foot short, as I was learning all I heard was as a lead its criminal to not be behind the jack, I didnt really agree with that and this is the first time ive heard this view. Great video!

JKC I agree. A bowl a foot short is a lot harder to beat than a bowl a foot past in my opinion.

gday nev. as you know i am new to lawn bowls and i am lovin it!! wondering about your thoughts on leading as a beginner??????? have played triples mainly and found this such a great learning experience. very interesting to see my greenmasters sometimes nowhere near the spot i had put them as leader. played 3 bowls on Saturday as opposed to 2 the previous week. setting the head with 2 and trying to place 1 at the back.

Interesting stuff here, would like more. But please do something about the sound - sounds like you are recording next to a meat grinder. Look for a Rhode transmitting mike to get the sound off the camera. Good thinking on the building of the head by the lead.

These are great, but can you do more between beginners and people who know what they are doing?

Ok thanks! I am based in UK so 'State Bowls' are a new concept for me. Plus I am very new to this game. When you said that for State Bowls, Leads needed to be able to bowl 50% (or more) of their bowls within 2ft of the Jack... I wasn't sure which level this was referring to...Obviously State Bowls is quite a high level. Could you please tell me what number of bowls (within 2ft of the Jack) would constitute a beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert? Thanks!

AJJmusician I'd say about 50% is around county average for a poorer county (indoors). Personally I'd be looking for 60-65% in 2 feet indoors, and around 50% outdoors here in the UK.
