Lawmower Man: Why Exploding A Mower With Tannerite Is A Bad Idea

Ойын-сауық

Special thanks to Euro Optic for sponsoring this video. Be sure to hit them up if you need optics or other fine sporting goods.
In this video we recreate KZread infamy of "Lawnmower Man" who shot 3lbs of ‪@TanneriteSports‬'s binary explosives in a riding lawn mover from about 25 meters away and lost his leg in the process.
You might have remember seeing the video a few years ago as it went viral. It's all fun and games with Tannerite until you drop the safety aspect from its use. That's how you get casualties, much like in the source video. Today's video, we compare a "non-fragmenting" charge of Tannerite to demonstrate how it looks without a fragmentation source. Then we clone the original lawnmower bomb to the best of our abilities. From there, we can do an analysis of the explosion and see if the characters in the video were lucky or not.
Our thanks to Johnny McNabb for donating the lawn mower for this video. If you're interested in fishing in the Corpus Christi area, please check him out at: / chrotychones .

Slowly but surely, we are getting some videos made. We have the lab basically done as well as our workshop. Sean is still working on getting us a new range home so we aren't camping out Army style. Remember kids! Do not recreate what we do here. We can not stress how dangerous blowing stuff up with tannerite is. Otherwise, you will end up in the next viral video about your injury.

I had a similar "Hey, Y'all, watch this" moment many years ago. 3# of Tannerite was placed inside a truck door. The door was propped up in a sandy wash area 20 Yards from us. Before we could say "Hell NO!", this guy shot the door. We were peppered with sand and dirt, while up out of that cloud came what looked like a giant bird with wings spread. (It was the steel door turned inside out, the wings were raggedly torn sheet metal strips) It was too high to hit us and flew over our heads.....To where we parked our trucks and cars....."OH,NO!" I shouted. It landed and stuck in the ground between my new truck and that guy's old beater. They were only 4' apart. That is how I met "Dangerous Bob" Bigando. (True story)

No joke, trying to edit this video was tougher than the explosive project itself. Mainly because YT keeps partially monetizing the video and we can't figure out what is triggered algorithm. We made 10 different versions with an insane amount of censoring and no success. We had to censor some as that resulted in the dreaded red "$" and only 18 and up classification. So, to help us defeat the algorithm, be sure to leave a ton of comments to get this video circulating. Drop your suggestions, your ideas, funny stories, and whatever you feel like. Just don't say anything that will get you flagged. Let's fight the Skynet!

This is why I hate censorship sometimes. So we have 2 videos. The original, where someone's just messing around with tannerite, and sustained life changing injuries. Then we have this one, explaining exactly *why* you should never mess around with explosives. So next time someone thinks of playing with Tannerite, they could be referred to both videos. Sometimes it's a lot easier to show, rather than just tell. How can it be dangerous when I (well, not I in the UK) can buy it from the store? Well, here's why.

Power tools are the same- 4 corporations produce 80% of them with only Makita still holding out as a singular company with most of the remaining 20%. Appliances, electronics, you-name-it and it's all the same. Older push mowers are usually made from cast aluminium. Aluminium alloys for casting are usually formulated with about 10% silicon, which improves casting fluidity and strength but reduces ductility, so they are quite brittle. Under the shock of an explosion I'd expect them to shatter into lots of small pieces rather than being torn like the steel mower in the video.

@@nerd1000ify I've only seen push mowers from stamped steel. Newer ones are stamped steel with plastic between the front wheels. Way cheaper to stamp them out of sheets of steel than to cast them from aluminum...

@immikeurnot Die casting is also cheap and fast. There are still many models (Husqvarna LC419A for example) sold with an aluminium deck. If I had to guess, I'd say the likely reason these exist (vs probably cheaper per unit steel stampings) is that the company concerned already had equipment and expertise for die casting, so it was easier for them to just add another casting line to their existing foundry rather than set up a new factory for large-ish stampings.

In the military, I had an eye-opening experience involving explosives too. My friends and I would get together on the weekends to target practice and also shoot explosives. I had some training in high explosives, and understood the chemistry and physics involved, and thought it would be a fun thing to do on the weekends. Everything had been going great for several months, until one day we found a broken washing machine that someone had left at one of the ranges (it was an unsupervised area of trails with 12 or so ranges). We decided to blow it up using exactly 1 Lb of ammonal, and had posted at least 250 ft from it. My buddy who had just bought a new AR-15 with scope, was itching to shoot it, because he had just zeroed in the scope the previous day, so we agreed he would do it. It was an older washer that was top load, so we pushed it over with the top opening facing us so he could shoot the charge placed inside it. Everyone including myself thought it was safe because we were almost a football field's distance away from it. STILL NOT SAFE!! He shot and hit the charge first attempt, and upon detonation the sides of the washer went flying everywhere, one piece even landing several hundred feet up on the mountain side that was behind it! Unfortunately, the top of the washer that was facing us blew off with ungodly speed rotating like a frisby and slicing through the air straight for us. It traveled that distance in less than half a second (I know this because I had a high-speed camera recording it) so we had no reaction time. It hit my friend's scope, upper forehead, and truck tailgate in that order... it hit the tailgate with so much force that it partially crumpled it like an accordion. For reference it would have taken probably 10 to 20 hard swings with a sledgehammer to do the same damage on the tailgate! Such a sobering day... My friend was actually lucky that it was not a direct hit on his head, it was a glancing blow that required 17 stitches. If it had been a direct hit on his head, it certainly would have cut his head in half. So really, he was unlucky and lucky at the same time, but he is fortunate to be alive today. We all learned lessons that day, the main one being, don't put explosives inside anything metallic or anything that has hard rigid walls, unless you are fully prepared for potentially deadly shrapnel.

When I got out of the service in 91. I showed my nephew's a couple simple things about being a combat engineer in the service. Showed them how to do it correctly and get behind a damn good barrier a really good distance away, around 200 or more yard's away. Only used around an 1/8 of a lb of tan, and compression on it to make it more than one lb of tan the regular way. Just to launching a basketball in the air. 1 lb first, went around 50 to 60 yard's in the air and landed about 100 yards away. Then I set up the1/8 lb and set it off. Needless to say it took them all the rest of the day to finely find the basketball. They lost sight of it up in the air, but they did finally find it around a thousand yards away in the swamps. Yeah that summer they all joined up as combat engineers. They loved that experience. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. It is a whole lot of work and training. I miss it myself.

I am a small engine repair guy and you have no idea how many times I wanted to do that with some of the mowers I have worked on. Part of me was sad to see all the usable parts that got destroyed but the kid in me took over and found great joy. Blowing up anything metal is a dumb move anyways and the guy that lost a leg was asking for and got what he deserved. Good video. I intend to save and watch it on days I get upset at working on another crap riding mower.

The tire coming toward the camera reminds me of a time we blew up an old 55 gallon barrel. The riveted top came loose and came straight for us like a wheel of death! It came straight for the old farm truck we were hiding in, but luckily at the last minute it veered off missing us completely. Still, lessons were learned. The other end of the barrel sliced through a barbed wire fence, then sped off through the woods slicing through branches as it went until finally coming to rest. It was pretty exciting.

I don't want to use tannerite so I use something called "blast caps" which are basically just a soda bottle caps with a needle valve like a basketball. It lets you pump them up to a decent pressure using a bike pump with a needle and they'll pop when you shoot them. You can fill the bottles with water or some kind of dusty material like flour or dry dirt and they'll make a cloud when they burst. Not as loud as tannerite but a whole lot cheaper and safer.

I’m thankful for my dads love of tannerite and pumpkin exploding when I was younger to teach me the ways of shrapnel. One of my birthdays we carved pumpkins and then decided to blow them up and my dad put a pound of tannerite in one. We were a pretty good distance away, my sister being the closest one because she wanted a video but even then she was still far. A few seconds later after my dad shot it a piece of pumpkin came out of the sky and hit her in the mouth. She wasn’t hurt other than her lip was bruised and her bottom tooth slightly cut her lip so needless to say it was a pretty hilarious thing to watch.
