@Arbiter Lite What are you talking about?
Just saved me 9 pages of reading. Now I can sleep and be well rested for Philosophy class in the morning.
I don't think you understand how many articles I have read over and over again, trying to make sense of what you just explained to me in 6 minutes. Thank you, bless your soul.

I can relate. Plato's articles are hard to understand
Man that is some crisp audio. Props to the sound department.
Best video explaining ROG. I still find it useful to read the actual parable and connecting what the video explains to what is difficult to interpret in the parable to better form a whole understanding !
this video just saved me
Been struggling to understand this concept ! This is the best simplified version ever ! thanks a lot :)
Oh you wonderful man, thank you for this video!
Excellent explanation, you totally saved me for my philosophy final!
Fantastic video. Very well presented. Thank you.
Thank god for this video, I was struggling to understand the reading regarding Plato's Republic, however, this video helped me completely understand the text.
Excellent explanation!!!
Ongod, I did not understand anything until coming to this OU professor's video. This is why OU is amazing. Big W! Boomer Sooner.
according to Wikipedia: Socrates ultimately argues that justice does not derive from this social construct: the man who abused the power of the Ring of Gyges has in fact enslaved himself to his appetites, while the man who chose not to use it remains rationally in control of himself and is therefore happy (Republic 10:612b). I personally think the Glaucon's idea works as a base to build a society on it but the society needs to guide its people to the way which they do justice for justice itself reaching morality in their relation and that's what Socrates was trying to say. that's the final goal of a society I think.

That sort of is his point - but he also acknowledges that this is an ideal … an idealized society that will probably never happen. Both Plato and Socrates were elitist in a way…. They looked down on and were skeptical of laymen. Neither would think that the average man is capable of becoming “truly just” in the Socratic way.
Information about the Republic, including explaining Gyges ring, the concept about justice, the classes of the Republic, and the cave should be mandatory teaching in High School.
It is amazing to see upon observation how hostage takers of all stripes throughout history make their own interpretations about 'Justice' and the fundamental concept of 'keep each other from harming one another' excerpt from the Plato's Republic model, and the corresponding Parable.
great metaphor for the internet and social media if you ask me.
Excellent explanation!
Thank you so much for this
Very well put thanks a lot!!!
Excellent!
Ooohhh saviiing faceee ~~how sweet the sound..
Amazing!
Glaucon's view is like Hobbes state of war. We come to contract for the same reasons.
Thanks for helping me with my paper! .........how do you pronounce these names so easily?
Did JRR Tolkien read the Ring of Gyges? I'm asking this because Gyges with his Ring of invisibility strongly resembles Smeagol, later to be known as Gollum, from Lord Of The Rings and the Hobbit.

There is strong speculation that Tolkien was influenced by this story, given the similarities between it and Lord of the Rings. However, there isn't any evidence in his writing/letters/etc that Tolkien had read the Ring of Gyges or was inspired by the story when he wrote his books. I like to believe he was, in fact, influenced by the Ring of Gyges. I also think that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is an improved version of that story.

Does anyone else live as if they’re being watched by different people depending on the situation? I’ve done it since I was young and wondered if it’s common
Order out of chaos
Great concept but it fails to address the idea that people will strive to do the right thing in order to gain something instead of avoid something. Many people will be good simply to gain the respect other peers or a feeling of moral superiority.
Who else thinks he looks like Brad Pitt when he was much younger?
