I've done a few pink-noise analysis tests on the Tascam mic. There's a huge spike at 8khz that can sometimes make you prefer it because it seems brighter, but in reality its an unnatural and harsh spike up that causes sibilance problems and is tough to remove in post.

This comparison is not between 3 mics - but between a directly plugged in mic, a small recorder and a wireless system! For example the Sennheiser G4 you linked, is bundled with the Me-2-II mic, that is sold seperately for around 129,- (and can also be bought in other bundles - or even used with the Tascam recorder). So your comparison is actually not about the mics' qualities (including preamps) but more about the different systems. That are directly plugged in, small recorder and wireless lav setups!

  • @KarenLum

Thanks for pointing this out! I'd be curious how all 3 mics would have sounded all plugged into the same recording device, because we're hearing different pre-amps in all 3.

Very good and informative. I should tell you in my field, Audio Post Production for movies and television, that is so critical to exactly match your mic positions. The level 3 mic is nowhere near in the same position on your shirt. We call this "on" and "off" axis. In fact two of them are buried into a crease of your shirt while the lowest one is has an external pop filter and is 100% more on axis . The level 2 and level 1 mic have nicer and smoother high end than the level 3 mic. Sorry to get critical. Dig the channel and thinking about subscribing.

To me, the pricing reflected the sound quality perfectly. I did not like the sound at the start before I even wondered what mic you were using. While the Sennheiser sounds the best to my easy, closest to the human voice with the need for least additional eq, and some de-essing, I wonder if all the mics were plugged into the same recorder, bypassing their own recorders, and transmitters, what the result would be. I'm guessing that the Sennheiser is the ME2, if I'm not mistaken? I have the Tascam DR10-l, and the voice needs plenty of EQ, the recorder is noisy, so de-hiss is needed. It works, but is not great. I also got an ME4 (the cardioid version of the ME2), which seems to sound better than the included Tascam, and is great for when you need more sound isolation, which is what the cardioid pattern gives you. A great comparison, sure to help a wide variety of budgets. Thanks for the video.

Actually the Sennheiser Mic only is the ME2 and costs $130. You optionally _could_ add $470 for the wireless G4 transmitter and receiver. (Or a $25 Rode VXLR+ to connect the ME2) This wireless functionality you won't get with the FTF Lav or the Tascam (has other benefits). So I think it's a bit unfair to compare only the sound alone of these three options based on a maxed-out Kit-price without to compare the totally different feature sets of each package. They're different. Each of those three options has its legitimate purposes, pros and cons for sure. I just would have liked those included in the test.

Yeah it was definitely a skewed comparison that mis-represented the mic’s involved, not to mention how a wireless system with colour the sound as well. It definitely hides the small price increase it actually is to the Sennheiser ME2 and what an actual $400 Sennheiser lav like the MKE2 or MKE1 sounds like (not to mention durability).

I just got my new FTF Lavalier Mic, I am also a new FTF member and I must say you get a lot when you enroll in the Fulltime Filmmaker online course. what Parker and the whole team teach without a doubt if in the end I can improve the image, the audio and the way of presenting my videos on my KZread channel to my audience, for me it will be the best investment I have made with my money; The amount of material within the course is incredible and I know for sure after seeing everything the course has to offer that if I fail it is my fault, but I doubt that will be the case as I started to learn how to edit my videos and count a story with them, my videos don't have to be as good as Parker's for now, they just have to be better than I do now lolz. Hopefully one day I can collaborate with the whole team. thanks for the gears and thanks for the course. God bless you guys

I'm an audio engineer and studio guy. First, the FTF sounds great, less bright/sibilant than the others,so I'm guessing it would have better feedback rejection for live use as well. Listen to arguably the most popular voiceover/radio/podcast mic in the world, the Shure SM7B, it sounds very "boomy" and bass with attenuated high-end, this is why many people love it (EV Re20 is basically the same, famous "radio announcer voice" mic, Rush Limbaugh's "Golden Mic" was an RE20). Secondly, the "$600 Sennheiser lav mic" is really a $500 wireless system with a $100 (or cheaper) lav mic (the ME2). The real high end Sennheiser lav mic is the MKE2, which is vastly superior to the ME2, which is generally regarded by pros as a pretty terrible mic. The MKE2 is also built like a tank....build quality is very important on these if you want them to last. Lav mics usually die from the cabling failing, usually at the connector or right where it joins with the mic body. Anyway, in this comparison, the FTF is very impressive. It has a slight honky nasal thing going on (common in cheaper mics) but you'd never notice it unless comparing to other mics. Anyway, EXCELLENT comparison and very well done getting straight to the point and not wasting time. Aloha!
