The way Dustin Hoffman puted his hand and helped Sir Laurence Olivier to climb up the stairs was beautiful and respectful.☺️❤👍
I love this dude, he's my favorite actor of the 20th century. Did you notice what he did? He used most of his own speech to praise another actor!
dustin every time he speaks about olivier, not only admires him sometimes really get emotional. damn i watch this and i felt touched. RIP Sir

I think there is also a lot of guilt. During the filming of Marathon Man he was constantly make fun of him behind his back. He was also dealing with a divorce and a severe drug problem (Cocaine). Production people were not happy with his disrespectful attitude towards Sir Lawrence. Now he sees the error of his ways
Jack Lemmon had tears in his eyes during this. He knew how great Sir Laurence was
Beautiful speech by Dustin...Olivier is the master. I wonder what he would think of all the marginally talented actors we have today...Actors who are more famous for their sordid personal lives rather than a brilliant career.

What a brilliant and darling man. God bless his soul.
I think no one in the this audience of fine actors like Lemmon oder Hoffman had a problem to admit that Olivier is the master, the apex predator of their profession.

He certainly took after his father in terms of looks. What a beautiful young man!
Everyone in the room seemed to be weeping.
Olivier received the Academy Awards Life Achievement Oscar within the same time frame and both were richly deserved. What an extraordinary film and theatrical career, including his memorable performances as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, as Archie Rice in Osborne's The Entertainer, as Hamlet, As Richard III, as Othello; even in more commercial films like Marathon Man and Boys From Brazil, he was brilliant.
It's nice to see the egos sidelined. Appreciation for each others talents is another way of saying we learn from one another. Two great actors and no question about it. It's just really nice to see them admiring one anothers's abilities.

I love Dustin Hoffman. He can make me laugh and smile at the same time in a two minutes speech. And what to say about Laurence Olivier? they are honoring him, he was probably the best english speaking actor in the 20th century, and he praises Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie. What a great gentleman he was.
Oliver was always a hero to me and all young actors. As I got older I realize , as a film actor, he was stuck in the 40s. Gilgud was greater, but Oliver the legend.
"Well, that's something histprical..." marvelous.
This is when actors had class. I agree.
Wonderful actor and a wonderful man. RIP Lord Olivier and thanks Dustin
Classy, handsome , and beautifully eloquent, with his command of the English language.
How astute and graceful it was of Lord Olivier, as a student not only of his art but of the history of that art, to call to mind and honor the memory of Edwin Booth.
Hoffman, exemplar of the American Style, feting Olivier, exemplar of the British Style... what could be cooler? Olivier, using most of his acceptance speech to tell Hoffman how effing brilliant he was in "Tootsie," that's what... (Olivier was right, of course, Hoffman is supernatural in that piece.) Between the two of them, so much brilliant talent, I'm surprised that the audience didn't leave the theater sun-blinded.

legend
Smooth recovery when he broke the award.
Olivier took the opportunity to praise Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, and however well deserved, nothing that Hoffman has done on film is comparable to Olivier's screen work in Wyler's Wuthering Heights as Heathcliff; his Archie Rice in Osborn's The Entertainer; his performance as Hamlet, as Richard III and as Othello; his work in Hitchcock's Rebecca and even his more contemporary films like Marathon Man, opposite Hoffman, Bunny Lake Is Missing and The Boys From Brazil. His King Lear, in a film version made for British television is spectacular as well.

I couldn't agree more. And yet that's what made Olivier so great: he never stopped loving and studying the performances of others, never lost that enthusiasm for good acting that made him such a "fan" and a student. He never stopped learning from others even when he was light years ahead of them--that's why, I think, he remained so great. I'm amazed how little of his acceptance speech is about him, and how much of it is about other actors he admires. What a selfless and humble performer with a great generosity of spirit.

Henry Fonda couldn’t carry the jockstraps of Peter O’Toole, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Cary Grant - and those are just the British actors of the 20th century. As far as Americans are concerned, he doesn’t stand up to Gregory Peck, Marlon, or even Gene Hackman.
They don't allow speeches of this length anymore. Instead it's just: "All right, big shot, get upt there!" "I would like to th..." "OK, get off, you've had your moment, golden boy." "B-b-but I-I..." MUSIC!
I agree.
