    The idea may have come from Stanley. I remember looking at a clip from one of his silent solo comedies (I think the title was "Kill or Cure"), and he was he was a salesman who was talking nonstop to a guy standing on the sidewalk. When Stan finally was able to catch his breath, another man comes up to the first guy, makes some hand signals, and they both move away, to reveal a "School for the Deaf" sign!

    Have never seen this clip, or the movie it's from, before. The duo's appealing there in the snow, though destitute & forlorn. There's something plaintive & moving in the tune they play. Ollie's cheerful optimism is commendable and touching, until he's frustrated by Stan; however, he recovers and manages to maintain this optimism briefly but which then is cancelled out as he's pummelled by a snowball from a sidewalk sourpuss. So much for Yuletide goodwill on this frigid, long-ago day. Would like to see the entire film!

    Sometimes it's a little overdone(held too long)over the span of their films but generally amusing--though probably not as effective with modern viewers of today. Originally these moments were meant to allow for audience laughter to play out & subside before moving on with the plot or situation. Now these 4th-wall scenes tend to perceived as being too self-consciously cinematic, rather than realistic.

  • @jackbuckley7816

    @jackbuckley7816

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@MrThermostatic I read it somewhere once but think I figured it out for myself. These moments are amusing but, over time, if you're a student of their films, they seems to go on too long. It's less natural, more contrived. One could write them off as unsophisticated methods of early motion-picture comedy, which may be fair-to-say & partially-true, but the real reason was to allow for audience-laughter to subside, probably viewed by the filmmakers as a cutting-edge comedy-technique. A neat idea, to be sure, but once-on to the tactic, it simply becomes tiresome, especially decades-removed from their original-screenings. They don't really fit-in with modern methods of humor, coming-off instead as self-conscious & heavy-handed, cinematically-speaking. Don't get me wrong, though--Hardy was a master at it!
