Laurel and Hardy: Missing Scenes from Blotto (1930) that Appear in La Vida Nocturna

Фильм және анимация

Laurel and Hardy released "Blotto" in February 1930. They also released Spanish and French language versions. The original film is lost, but we have a 1936 re-release version. When compared with the 1930 Spanish version, the only one we still have, it appears that about 13 minutes were cut from the 1936 re-release.
Here are almost all the scenes that were cut, but remain in the Spanish version "La Vida Nocturna" (the Night-life). It contains some amazing Laurel and Hardy moments, including a great seltzer water sequence, a hiccups gag, a great off-key nonsense song, and a tin foil hat-twisting ear gag that helps to make sense of a similar gag that remains in the 1936 version.
There are also some wonderful dances. The first dance, about a minute here has been cut to about 15 seconds in the 1936 version. The third dance is quite sexy and was probably toned down in the English version. It was even edgy for precode times.
Since all the E
If you enjoyed the English version of Blotto and haven't seen the Spanish version of it, "La Vida Nocturna," consider this an extra 12 minute bonus.

There were three different language versions of the film, English, Spanish and French. Sound had only recently been invented and it was impossible at the time to dub voices onto the film post production. For this reason some scenes had to be shot three times, with Stan and Ollie reading from phonetic spelling boards just off camera for the Spanish and French versions. Rather than have phonetic spelling boards for all of the cast they used different actors who could speak the desired language for each version. So they used three different actresses to play the part of Stan's wife. Anita Garvin ( 1906-1994 ) played the wife in the English version "Blotto". Linda Loredo ( 1907-1931 ) in the Spanish version "La Vida Nocturna" and Georgette Rhodes (1900-1990) in the French Version "Une Nuit Extravagante".

"La vida nocturna" is the best Spanish short of Laurel and Hardy.

There’s the scene early in the Blotto film that has Stanley’s wife’s “fresh air” response deleted, but that was minor.

Thanks for posting this. I hate to see truncated versions of movies and the awful background music from 1936 was the worse.

Dancing and musical sequences were also added to the film, with cut-away shots of Babe and Stan, for foreign markets to lengthen them. This way, Roach would sell them to foreign markets as "featurettes" for more money.

The scene when the woman sits on the wet chair was so funny. Wish it were in the English version. Hard to find these.

Someone should try and glue the L&H Spanish bits (i.e. the hiccup scene) into the English Blotto.

That is not a man, way too feminine, the way she moves and walks away. She is just thin, perfect for her slapstick style (1920s) belly dancing.
