I would love to check my moms ancestry. She is the grans niece of Yakima Canutt, the most famous stuntman of all time. The name Canutt, comes from what my mom told me is related to Kin Cnut, the king of Norway. Her mom, a Land sadly, who passed away last year, was third cousin to Evangeline Lodge Land, the mother of Charles Lindbergh. I still like to know more about the Canutt Ancestry.

Wow, my mom & I had a similar experience. Looking for my great grandmother's sister's grave. She had died in childbirth in the 30s, and my mom was named after her. When we found the headstone, my mom was near tears...there were the names of her & her stillborn baby girl. Her baby girl had my first & middle names. Mom had NO idea! Still gives me chills.

My great grannys obituary (died when my granny was 14) had my name listed as her daughter. My granny and I do not have the same name, not even the same number of letters/syllables and they don't even sound alike. My granny was raised by her dad since a toddler so it was not my granny or her father who placed the obituary and granny did not even know there was one because her mom was out of her life (mental illness) in another state when she died, so it had to have been extended family. We wish we knew who placed it and why they picked some random name (or why they chose it) as her daughters name instead of grannys real name. Maybe they didn't know grannies real name? Who knows. So my folks accidentally (I was named after two of my paternal grandfathers aunts) gave me that name on the obituary that the family didn't know about until after granny died at age 90.

I didn't get the chance to do this with my mom. After she passed away I wished I had written down all those stories she told me over and over and over throughout my life because as many times as I heard them I didn't listen. I've forgotten the details. My advice would be to record your mom telling all of her stories because as much as you'd like to think you'll remember them you won't remember the details.

This is very uncanny! My grandmother was born in Rankin County, Mississippi...and her family lived there from the early 1800's as soon as it was opened for settlement. People didn't name their children randomly in general. I found out that my mother was named for her great-grandmother...and my grandmother was named after her own grandmother...and in turn, I was named after my 3rd great-grandmother on my paternal side and my grandmother. As it turns out...there are Joanna's back in my lines for over 400 years!!!

This was just heavenly! What a thrill to share those stories that they, mom Diane Ladd and daughter Laura Dern, told each other. It was so much fun, and I am jealous. What my mother told me, what she shared, wasn't true. All she said, again and again, was that daughters should be very close to their mothers and tell their mother everything. I thought she had that kind of relationship with her own mother, so I tried. But it failed because whenever I told her about anything I was dealing with, she didn't empathize at all. She just said, you shouldn't feel that way. Then she'd tell me what to do instead, and how to feel. What good is that, I ask you? Anyway, after she died, I found out from one of her oldest friends that my mom and her mother actually had a pretty fractious relationship. My mother left home at a very early age because she and her mother were arguing and fighting all the time. Wow!

I stumbled across the name Dern in my own research in Hesse (Germany). According to a family tree available online, Bruce Dern's name comes from an ancestor (in the 1600's or early 1700's) in a village near Gießen.
