Stunting?
And remember, folks -- this was one of Stephen Sondheim's EARLIEST efforts! One of its most masterly touches is how the imprisoned Ella -- nineteen years old, a prisoner in the department store since she was six -- can only relate her distant memories of nature to items of merchandise that she sees in the store. the sky is "blue as ink", ice is "like vinyl....cold as silver, white as sheets." Another of the many sparkling gems in Sondheim's crown.
In my grief over Sondheim's passing, this is the song and the version of this song I most wanted to her. It rips my heart out with the beauty of her singing and the subtle gestures and looks she gives to the camera. I never expected to be passionate about a song sung sitting on the bathroom floor but this would be the one that made that happen. Thank you , Laura.
Only Laura Benanti could sit in a bathroom, with a recorded piano accompaniment, and just sing.... and rip your heart out. So beautiful! ❤️❤️💔
Always come back to this gem. Thank you Mr S. for this brilliant creation. And thank you Miss B. for this seminal interpretation.
One of the great Broadway voices of our generation. Brava, Laura -- even sitting next to your bathtub and singing, you knock us all out.
What a beautiful voice. I miss Broadway so much. It will be back and so will I. Thank you for the gift of excellent music
I keep coming back to this, and I can't watch it without crying. What a beautiful tribute not only to Stephen Sondheim, but also to this hazy and unclear time we're all living in together. Brava.
Her voice is just, wow
To my mind, only the late, great Mark Murphy gets inside, and indeed lives, this uniquely Sondheim song.
I've watched this about 20 times, since the Sondheim salute. When she sings the phrase, "I remember leaves", it's so filled with beauty, it takes my breath away. Sublime.
Godspeed and thank you, Mr. Sondheim.
my favorite. always got a job with this
That was tender and lovely, Laura. And you have wonderful taste in bathroom tiles.

The tonal range in the tiles nearly matches that of her blouse.
I'm obsessed with Laura and her voice!!! She's beautiful all around!!!
Such a BEAUTIFUL voice and such a beautiful song
I never really noticed until now how much she looks like Charmian...how beautiful 💜💙💚
This is a beautiful song delivered by a beautiful singer. After being indoors for a long time I try to remember
She is a sparrow. A treasure. Thank you for your beautiful rendition of this song.
Feeling this hard
This hits much harder today now that he is gone .. he revolutionized theater as we know it he will never be forgotten RIP Mr. Sondheim
Love her!!

Just beautiful.
Absolutely Beautiful
I love you Laura.❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for your beautiful interpretation of this piece.
Best version I heard yet
Lyrically and compositionally, this would have to be one of my favourite Sondheim songs, and such a lovely interpretation by Laura.
Im covering this now! I love this song so much
You sound like those Disney princess singing, honestly AMAZING. 👏
best version of this song ever!!!
Holigod, my teenage daughter is on her way to Broadway and introduced me to this splendid song she sang for me yesterday. And this Laura Benanti rendition very best ever... well actually 2nd best, right after my daughter Tamsin's.. :D
Benanti sings this so beautifully.
WHAT a voice.
Absolutely Stunning!!! Heartfelt, intimate and just speaking the words..A very gifted Sondheim artist.
Unbelievable 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I remember sky It was blue as ink Or at least I think I remember sky. I remember snow Soft as feathers Sharp as thumb tacks Coming down like lint And it made you squint When the wind would blow. And ice like vinyl On the streets Cold as silver White as sheets Rain like strings And changing things Like leaves. I remember leaves Green as spearmint Crisp as paper. I remember trees Bare as coat racks Spread like broken umbrellas. And parks and bridges, Ponds and zoos, Ruddy faces, Muddy shoes, Light and noise and Bees and boys And days. I remember days, Or at least I try. But as years go by They're sort of haze, And the bluest ink Isn't really sky And at times I think I would gladly die For a day of sky.
I remember singing this in high school choir. Didn’t realize it was Sondheim!
Reminds me September song
Beautiful voicebfond out tnt she can sing
I would love to hear this song performed in the appropriate key by an older singer that is sung with purity and simplicity to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s disease. I know Sondheim wrote this song for a character who is about 17 years old but to me it is much more heartbreaking and touching if it is sung by a senior lady. Perhaps that is because I take care of people with dementia.
This tempo is too damn fast (and steady, which is a function of the pre-recorded aspect), but she's such a sensitive musician that she makes the song as expressive as if it had been slow with many juicy rubati. Benanti for President.
What a beautiful song from a pretty girl. Are there any other songs that you sing, please?
Damn Melania can sing real good
