One idea for what to do with this device: Configure the four tracks as bass, pad, arp, and lead. Configure 7 of the 8 patterns (and matching scenes) for the 7 main chords in a scale. Then play it like a NDLR, changing realtime between the 7 patterns, ideally while playing a melody on the lead track or on another device. This uses most of its sequencing capacity (4 tracks and 8 short patterns) and turns it into an easy accompaniment sequencer.

WOW WOW WOW! I love my Circuit and this feels like such an incredible natural extension into my Ableton usage. This almost feels like Push playability but fewer layers and more straightforwardness. Cutting the fat pretty much. I can imagine they much slap this guy in a Circuit Pro. Thank you for the greatly explained and well-presented video, Bo!

I'm sure this will be a video that goes well with the Novation in-depth video on the Sequencer. My Launchpad Pro has been gathering dust, but it's now one of the key pieces of gear in my production workflow. The more I explore it, the more I love it. The Sequencer's features sometimes were hard to wrap my head around, so this demo is something I'll be returning to so that I can get the hagn of them. Thanks for doing it!

With the latest firmware, the Circuit's sequencer is lightyears beyond what Novation has offered since. It's a real bummer. Using the MonoStation or the newer SL Mk3 controllers feel like a huge step backward. We can't queue up patterns, only run one from the next in a chain. There are no micro-timings. The ability to carry over a tone from one pattern to the next is limited. If the Launchpad Pro Mk3 works like the MonoStation or SL Mk3 sequencer, then I'm not interested. The Circuit would still be far more advanced.

Thanks Bo! Very helpful tutorial! I just want to contradict saying it can not be recommended as a sequencer alone - I have had lot of fun with it this Jamuary, and I dont have Ableton, I just controlled hardware synths with it. There might be better sequencers, but they also nearly all cost (much) more, so if you are ok with 4 tracks(e.g. 2 synthss and one drum), it's just fine for the price. Besides ableton it can also be used nicely with bitwig, as there is the drivenbymoss midi controller extension that makes it functioning very similar as in ableton (which is free and also supports many more controllers, including Maschine and Push).

any reason you wouldn't recommend this as a standalone hardware sequencer other than missing out on half of the devices potential? At the price range it is already I think one of the best pieces of gear when on a budget for sequencing multiple synths. I may move into ableton someday but not in the near future, I have a Ms-20 mini, Minilogue and Dreadbox erebus. I am currently using my circuit as a sequencer but want to open up the two digital synth channels to add more depth to my music. I also prefer the pad layout being similar to the circuit and that I am not very familiar when it comes to playing keys.

Nice video! It's a little pity that LPP MK3 cannot lit the buttons more as it does not have an optimal visibility for the video in this amount of light. Everything is nicely explained, thanks for that. Besides, what I was primarily looking everywhere over the internet and couldn't find the answer anywhere (even in this video) was how to record longer sequence then the 32 steps in the standalone mode at once. Actually, there are two options, that can be combined together as I found: 1) slow down the sequence pattern (to half speed or quarter speed - every time omit one button to the left controlling the pattern speed, it gets some triplet speed otherwise). You can now record two or four times long sequence but you lose note timing precision of course. 2) With empty sequencer, use "scenes" in a way, that you make a linear chain of individual patterns for the wanted track (up to all 8 per track). This works also for patterns being empty as you can now play them and watch them to change in the time! At this time you can save the project and have it as a starting point for this purpose. Now if you hit record button, it will keep the pattern flow defined within those "scenes" and you can fill them one by one with your performance :-). Hope this helps someone! I am considering making a special video showing off this feature, so let me know if it might be helpful having done this.

I assume you wouldn't be able to play the sequences all at once, maybe just the armed track, but you could record one sequence (track) then arm the next sound and sequence it over the previous one. Just realised now that I want this. 4 times I've owned a Push. Sold it everytime because I only used it for drum pads and sequencing. But for exactly those 2 things I really liked it. And the LPP3 has those 2 things at a more affordable price. So if I'm not really using the other features of Push 2, it makes more sense to get the Novation. I can use it without a computer. So I can also use it for playing in drums on Octatrack. AND it has 4 tracks of POLYPHONIC tracks. Only 32 steps. But with the pattern chain feature I actually prefer that over a 64 step sequencer on the LPP3 specifically, since that's how it's physically laid out. Srsly this controller/sequencer seems like a total gem for the money. One thing though, does the pads feel about as great as on a Push? Because I didn't like the small ones on the Launchkey mk2 series. They needed a lot of force. Edit: just figured out that octatrack doesn't recieve velocity information on audio tracks. Weird. But well, I'll just use chromatic on that unit then.

I wonmder if you can answer a question. I have a Korg Wavestate whose midi out is connected to a Roland Systemn 8 which in turn has its midi out connected to a Novation Mininova. All are using Midi channel 1. If I play notes on the Korg they are replicated on the other two synths. However, if I play the Korg through the Launchpad Pro Mk 3. only the Korg is triggered. Why aren't the other two synths the way they are when I play the Korg directly?

I've seen that the novation circuit can essentially be used as a midi looper if you have midi going both ways between it and external gear. However, it looks like sending receiving cc info and being able to record it for parameter locking/ automation record is very tricky or not doable depending on the gear. I'm guessing the LP can record note info from an external synth in this configuration and act as a midi looper, and I know you can set up custom page with cc control for various parameters on external gear or ableton, but can it record/ loop cc info for automation?

Bo, this is the exact type of "music" I would like to produce and in time incorporate other types. What is the best location to learn MIDI information, sequencing and programming. Right now I have a Circuit, a Minilougue XS module and the Korg Elecscribe Sampler 2.

@@emberkeeper1737 Same here - I used to have a push 1 - the responsiveness was Ok but not great. I want to use this as an instrument - I hear the push 2's pad dynamics is really good and I'm more interested in playability over Ableton integration so in that regard the price of the launchpad pro would make it much more attractive. Speaking of which if they made an 8 track sequencer version of this I think a lot of people would be queuing up for this.

jC3drums lack of cv out put is a downer, however midi through on a KeyStep will give cv clock.... an arp would be ace, perhaps in a firmware update. I wonder if Novation are holding some features back for future updates.

Blos - Music If you’ve only just bought it, you’ll have zero problems whatsoever in returning it. Especially if you don’t mention how you’ll be wanting any kind of refund at all. Praise the shop, the helpful staff etc. Explain you buy all your kit from said store. You’ve probably realised this ages ago that music shops are one of the only types of store where you find total bell-ends working at any level - from working the floor, middle management, the sales guys nor the boss - for some reason, it’s impossibly difficult to find dickheads working there. Sounds daft, but it’s usually true lol. They’ll be more than happy that you will want to return there to shop for the new Launchpad when it gets released when you say that you would love it to to have the cost refunded by way of store credit or back into your account if you have one. You’ll be completely fine if you do like this. And as long as you’re not the one who’s the idiot by throwing away the receipt as soon as you took it out of the box !!
