    sorta - sesquiplane refers to a biplane wherein one wing is ~1/2 the length of the other therefore his biplane wouldn't and would instead be an unequal-span biplane

    Given that a lot of old WW1 aircraft had rotary radials, that forgo a flywheel by rotating the ENTIRE ENGINE (the crank is attached to the fueselage, the entire engine rotates with the propeller) to save weight, your plane is very good considering that it's actually at a deficit of power for a WW1 engine.

  • @seapickles5762
    @seapickles5762 Жыл бұрын

    Regarding guns behind propellers: I’m pretty sure they were mechanically linked to the engine so that they would fire between the blades of the propeller as it rotated, allowing pilots to shoot the enemy instead of themselves

  • @mekiyahhazbin1720

    Yep, and it was a WW1 invention! Didn't take them long to figure out that blowing off your propeller was a no-go 😂

  • @ivy7642

    Synchronization gears. They interrupt the firing mechanism while firing would risk hitting the blades. However before they figured this out, they either Risked it (!!!!!) and just shot through, hoping not to hit their prop, fitted the guns to the upper wing, or they literally put armour on the back side of the propeller to deflect shots. The synchro was a very important invention lmao.

  • @Maverick-gg2do

    @Maverick-gg2do

    11 ай бұрын

    @mekiyahhazbin1720 It did actually take a bit before they tried syncronization. First, they tried mounting the engine at the back so you could have an uninterrupted view forward to fire, but these planes didn't fly all that well and were a bit slower and less maneuverable than ones with the engine at the front. Then, someone had the bright idea of mounting metal deflectors to the base of the propeller so you could shoot past (and into) the propeller without shredding it apart. This worked surprisingly well, though it did seem to damage the propeller and engine over time and was prone to unexpected breakdowns of the engine. Then someone tried mounting a gun on the top of the wing firing over the propeller, this kind of worked. Eventually someone managed to mechanically time the gun and propeller to let them shoot in between the gaps of the propeller. And this worked REALLY WELL. Eventually everyone kind of just copied that last design

    In regards to the comment about realistic and wing flexing; no AND yes. Some planes did have proper ailerons on their wings, but some planes had wing-flexing like the German Fokker monoplane.

    Wing flexing was more a pre-war and early-war thing, with the Camel being decidedly late-war you're fine using ailerons. If you wanted to make a Taube (a 19*10* design, kept in service far too long) then wing flexing would be necessary.

    You deal with knocking in the engine (preignition) by either decreasing compression ratio which sacrifices peak power, enriching fuel mixture, which sacrifices fuel efficiency, or advancing ignition timing, which gives better throttle response, enhances peak power, but again hurts fuel economy, or finally, by using higher octane fuel.

    The Bi-plane with smaller lower wing is called a "sesquiplane". It doesn't actually have to be the lower wing that's smaller, this term covers any bi-plane where the wings are significantly different sizes, can be either the top or bottom that is the smaller, but it's more common for the bottom to be the smaller. I'm not sure yours would count as such though, I mean the definition I could find emphasize it's a significant size difference between the wings to qualify, I'm not sure yours are that significantly different, but.... it's hard to know exactly how different they have to be. When I think of a sesquiplane, it's things like the various Nieuports, the 17 and the 23 come to mind, where the cord of the lower wing is probably about half the upper wing, or the AN-2, where, while the cord is similar, the lower wing is quite noticeably shorter than the upper.

    Does Flyout not have rotary engines? Because the Clerget 9B from the Sopwith Camel is a rotary. That is, the entire cylinder bank spins around the crankshaft, instead of the crankshaft spinning inside the bank. You used a radial, which would have been rarely if ever used in WW1.
