Laughable Nonsense: Messi as the Player With the Most Goals Scored in a Calendar Year.

Спорт

In the 2012 football calendar year, Messi scored 91 goals and it was quickly accepted as a record for the most goals scored in a calendar year in the history of football. The previous record was attributed to Gerd Muller who scored 85 goals in the 1972 calendar year for both club and country. When Messi was nearing the goal-scoring feat of Gerd Muller, protest voices were ringing from Zambia. The Zambian authorities, journalists, and historians declared to the world that their own Godfrey Chitalu had a score of 107 goals in the 1972 calendar year. In other words, the record for the most goals scored in a calendar year was not for Gerd Muller in the first place, let alone, Lionel Messi.. This news from Africa means that Messi was 16 goals shy of the record from this Zambian. Not surprising, the foreign media disputed the Zambian claims. The Zambians took up the task and gathered evidence. Foremost among them was the journalist, Jerry Muchimba. This hardworking journalist made available newspaper reports of every single match played by Godfrey Chitalu in 1972. From the newspaper reports came the dates, venues, names of opposition teams, competitions, and goals scored by Godfrey Chitalu. It was a detailed work and he even published them in a book titled, Godfrey Ucar Chitalu. The world bias media will still have none of it. The Zambia authorities even made available a photo of Godfrey Chitalu holding a ball with his name and the 107 goals scored inscribed on it. This special yellow ball with the 107 goals scored was provided by Rothmans International, the Sponsors at that time. The world media will still have none of it. Kwabwe United, the club that he played for decided to rename their Railway stadium as Godfrey Chitalu 107 Stadium to mark their 50th anniversary in 2012.
Many rejected the record of Godfrey Chitalu. why did it take long for the Zambians to make this claim? They ask. Why not in 1972 when Gerd Muller was acknowledged as the holder of the record. Why now? Well, the world at that time was not a global village as we see it now. And moreover, the Zambians have already acknowledged their player as having the record. If the world refused to notice it, so be it. An interesting point to note is that FIFA has always been aware of the exploits of Godfrey Chitalu. Godfrey Chitalu was awarded by FIFA in 1982 for his immense contribution to football at a ceremony in France. I brought this point for us to know that we are talking about a generational talent. FIFA has come out to say that they don’t keep a record of goals scored at the domestic level of its national associations. In effect, FIFA does not recognize goals scored domestically by a player as they are not interested in it. FIFA has therefore not ratified the goals of both Lionel Messi and Godfrey Chitalu as well as other players on the most goals scored in a calendar year list. But the sad thing is that the sports media, in general, are ignoring the evidence and still attributing the most goals scored in a calendar year to Lionel Messi.
Some football fans acknowledge that Godfrey Chitalu has scored more goals but still assert that the record still belongs to Messi. Why? They are of the view that the Zambia league and for that matter, African football is weaker than that of Spain and Europe. For this reason, his goals should be rendered null and void. Or he should be given a low coefficient as in the way UEFA does it for clubs playing in the so-called lower leagues. Well, that is UEFA business and their purview only ends at Europe and not Africa and other parts of the world. This is clearly a laughable nonsense. They are assuming that it is easy to score goals for fun in the Zambian league. Godfrey Chitalu was a once-in-a-while generational talent. Before Godfrey Chitalu and after him, no one has scored goals like him in Zambia. (research on the top goals scorers). At the national level, Godfrey Chitalu has scored 79 goals in 111 appearances for Zambia making him the African player with the most goals for his national team. And he is regarded as the fifth player on the all time list of the world with most goals for his national team. Why are they acknowledging that one since he scored most of the goals against African opposition? Is it because he is not on top of that list? I am sure if he were, they would cry out loud that his goals were mostly against weak opponents. Godfrey Chitalu’s goals per game ratio for the national team is among the best ever in the history of football. And another thing to note is that Godfrey Chitalu scored 81 goals in the calendar year in 1968 while playing for Kitwe United.

He also scored 79 goals on international level(2 above Pele 77 for Brazil) despite playing for a country that never qualify for the world cup and led them once to silver medal in Nations cup. His truly a genius no African his yet to break that most goals for country set by chitalu they are not even close till date.

It was 107 seven goals in 309 days against messi and muller most goal in a leap year, if we were to make it a calendar year that will be 116 goals because their league started at the end of February and he had played two friendlies before the league started in which he scored 2 goals in 2:2 draw against that club only to score 7 goals in the 9:0 thrashing of that same club in the second leg so chitalu scored 116 goals in a calendar year.

Lionel Messi also is credited with the most goals in European top leagues 50 goals in 2011-2012 season for Barcelona. Yet Dixie Dean scored 60 league goals in the 1927-1928 season for Everton. In what at that time was the top tier of English league football, the first division (Since replaced by the English Premier League). And that 60 goals scored by Dixie Dean is still the record goals scored in a season in the English professional game. Dixie Dean rightfully holds the record for goals scored in European top leagues with his 60 goals scored. Lionel Messi never held it in the first place with his 50.

interesting analysis but I think your argument over simplifies the concept of coefficients in the lower league goals. Pele’s claim of a 1000 goals is debunked for similar reasons. Not just goals from African league. As far as national team goals is concerned, all national team matches are equally recognized by FIFA. i.e No national team game is more important than the other hence a goal is a goal at the national level. I don’t see people crying Foul about Ali Daei. For a long time he’s been recognized as the top scorer and he’s not from any ‘top football nation’. This has nothing to do with Africa or the person but everything to do with the competitiveness of the league which is a factor when it comes to number of goals recognition. There’s a reason why teams from some countries has to be in the play off to qualify for champs league even after winning their league and other teams still get another opportunity to qualify even after failing to join the top 4 in their league. Also there’s a reason some continents get more slots than others in the world even though they have fewer countries. It’s all about competitiveness

Thanks for your view. By your argument should Argentina goals against lower ranked teams be discounted? Goals are goals irrespective of where and the opposition it is played. You gave the Pele example. At the time Pele was playing, the Brazilian and for that matter the South American league was the toughest in the world. You can go to that timeline to verify. People discount Pele because they thought his goals are made up and make sarcastic remarks that his goals are from some of his backyard games. Pele's goals are well documented and recognised by Guinnesss World Records. For Your Information, FIFA does not do this coefficient thing with goals. FIFA says they do not keep records of domestic goals of its national associations. It is Europe that alludes lower goal efficient to clubs playing in the lower league. And that is done for the European goal king award. The irony is that the career goals of the player playing in the so called lower league is never discounted. That is where the irony is. Lets face it, even the so called lower leagues do not produce so many goals like the elite league. The bottom line is that one plus one is equal to two. Any attempt to change this logic is favoritism and plain bias. The bottom line of this video is to sensitise and raise awareness that Godfrey Chitalu really scored 107 goals in a calendar year. If you want to reduce the goals via a strange calculus, so be it. But 107 is 107.

@@HoveringAfrica That’s why I said in my initial submission that National team goals are different. Every goal is a goal at the National level so you just made my point with FIFA not discounting goals. Weren’t all his national team goals counted? They were right? So a goal is really a goal at the national level. That is why when Argentina plays Bolivia or Spain plays Latvia or Ghana plays Lesotho, no goal is discounted because that’ll inherently suggest one country’s superiority over the other. But Leagues are different. No two leagues are of same quality unless that’s the position you’re trying to take. Even at the national level, once you group the teams into leagues, the narrative changes. Because then, statistics will be evaluated through the lens of competitiveness and merits. Because then you’ll be pulling teams together in groups and some groups would definitely be stronger than others and that is recognized in the form of coefficients and playoffs. That’s equity not equality. Equality means recognizing every goal as a goal. Equity means recognizing goals in light of the competitiveness of the league. It’s the same principles behind away goals. There’s a reason why the entire sports world including our own African journalists are ignoring that assertion. Not because they’re all dumb or know this info which is easily accessible on the internet. But because they all recognize something you’re overlooking in your assertion.

@@samuelfosuhene4248 it is UEFA that employs the low coefficient policy. That policy only covers UEFA national associations and clubs. It is not a universal law. Just note that. And you can assume but what has happened has happened. And for your information, the away goal rule has been scrapped by UEFA. Because in reality it is ludicrous to treat one goal as two goals. And that is UEFA jurisdiction. It does not cover other parts of the world.
