One of the more amusing films in the "Fighting Men" series produced by the Signal Corps for enlistees and inductees, "Latrinograms" takes a look at the kind of confusion, poor judgement and military miscalculation that can result from rumors and bad information. The term "latrinogram" was WWII slang for any gossip, rumor, or unfounded information passed along in the latrines (communal toilets). It could also refer to toilet wall graffiti that was used to spread rumors. At the start of this short, restricted film (meaning -- the public would not be permitted to see it), a group of G.I.s who are sitting on the latrine, discuss a news article about a "death ray" that will change military warfare forever. Another example shown in the film is a more prosaic kind, as an infantry squad becomes delayed, when the sound of a threshing machine is confused by a G.I. for enemy tanks. Still another rumor is shown when, in an active firefight, a squad leader wisely refuses to believe the report of a shell-shocked soldier. Fortunately, the squad leader doesn't pull back, saving his unit and those around him. "Until you've seen it for yourself or have gotten your information first hand, never stake your life on anything you hear in battle," concludes a veteran officer at the end of the film.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

I spent so much of my working career in Century City. It was nice seeing what some of the old buildings looked like (I had forgot a few of them). One day after working in CC when I got home, my wife was watching an old episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies" where they somehow got involved in real estate development and they were doing a "groundbreaking" for a new building. That location was the building that I had worked in that same day...

Of all the artillery, bullets, and searchlights, they decided the death ray would be getting your foot stuck in a branch.

I would think 37mm Oerlikon and 40mm Hotchkiss rounds have actually been confused as death rays by a fair amount of Japanese Divebombers.

When I was in the Army, we called these "s### house rumors." "Latrinogram" somehow sounds more elegant.

Tell a lie enough times and it becomes the truth. Unless smarter pepoles stop it. To bad today all we have are dumb people who bleive anything and everything other than facts.

Like global warming and electric vehicles will work for the average American family and will not overload the grid? Then there is the other good one where wind an solar will be able to replace fossil and nuclear. ,,,,,, Maybe someday, in about 50 or 100 years.

I’m sure this kind of stuff happened all the time. So many of these fighting “men” were still teenagers, or barely older than teens. No experience at all, and while they had intelligence, they were ignorant (as most children are).
