Latest US tariffs on Chinese imports 'politically motivated', says analyst

The White House announced on Tuesday (May 14) that it is hiking tariffs on US$18 billion worth of imports from China, targeting strategic sectors like electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, steel and critical minerals. These hikes are politically motivated, with about six months to go for the US presidential election, says Dr Derek Scissors, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He tells CNA's Asia First that while there could be some retaliation by China, further tit-for-tat restrictions are unlikely.

China makes all the parts of its E-vehicles, that includes materials to build its auto plants. China produces cheap electricity. China produces cheap drinking water. Good Question: How the US can compete with China? Donald Trump, emperor of US Empire: If we cannot compete with them, we kidnap their CFO/CEO. We kidnapped the CFO and the daughter of the founder of the company, with which we cannot compete fairly and squarely. And we kept her under house arrest for more than 1000 days! And they could not even do anything to the US. See? Better yet, we have our 51st state Canada do all the dirty work on our behest.

29-3-2024, Biden’s $7.5 billion investment in EV charging has only produced 7 stations in two years. After two years, that program has only delivered seven open charging stations with a total of 38 spots where drivers can charge their vehicles, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Highway Administration. (The funding should be enough to build up to 20,000 charging spots or around 5,000 stations, according to analysis from the EV policy analyst group Atlas Public Policy.)

lol, why don't you cut and paste the whole article from the Washington Post. Basically, the article says the money was allocated to the States. The States are working extremely slow. _Stations are open in Hawaii, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania and under construction in four other states. Twelve additional states have awarded contracts for constructing the charging stations; 17 states have not yet issued proposals._ _Nick Nigro, founder of Atlas Public Policy, said that some of the delays are to be expected. “State transportation agencies are the recipients of the money,” he said. “Nearly all of them had no experience deploying electric vehicle charging stations before this law was enacted.”_

In 2023, US import value from China is 427.2 billion U.S. dollars, and export value to China is 147.8 billion U.S. dollars. In the scheme of things, 18 U$Billions is but 4.2% of China export into the US. Now is China going to do a song and dance about such a minuscule amount? Probably not. China is glad that it can help Joe to win some votes from the Auto workers. It is sad that the US thinks imposing tariffs is a trade policy. It s not. It is an indication that it is raising a white flag, it cannot compete with China. It should learn how to become "overcapacity".

Yes the US is giving subsidies to US automaker in the Inflation Reduction Act policy in 2023 but they still cannot compete with Chinese EVS. This is because the Chinese Evs makers has the full production capacity to produce EV cars from nuts and bolts to batteries to everything. They have the complete supply chain besides lower cost of labors. The US does not.

    1. Well millions of Chinese buy Iphone, Tesla, HP, fast food - McDonald, KFC, Burger King and coffee - Starbucks and some US apparels EVERYDAY too. (However, sales of American products are decreasing every year as more Chinese products are getting increasingly popular in China with better technology, quality and competitive price) 2.190,000 American students in China? Please NO. It will affect the IQ levels of everyone and they might do protests of all kinds in China - Just kidding (However, you must consider that it used to be more than 380,000 Chinese students studying in the US for a very long time. But now after covid and increasing hostilities (hate crime and racist attack) against Chinese people, whether is Mainland Chinese or Chinese American, and many Chinese students being turned away by US immigration upon arrival contributed to the decline in numbers. This is why Chinese parents are not keen to send their children to study in America anymore. Why study in the US when you are not welcome? Another factor, a big one, is Chinese universities are getting very good in China with many in the top 100 rankings in the world. Therefore many Chinese students stay in China to study instead of going to the US. BTW you make it sound like the US is doing a big favor to Chinese students for letting them study in its universities, well the reality is US universities needs Chinese money. Chinese students pays full FULL FEES which helps US universities stay afloat. But not anymore. Many US universities will go bust in the near future. For your info, most Chinese students who studied in the US are not the cream of the crop. They came from rich Chinese families. The finest students study in Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan UNIVERSITY ....and many more.
