Just today I finished my project of RD2 following your recommendations and settings, I really enjoyed the hours soldering, gluing, screwing and programming this FPV plane. Many thanks!

Great review video, and I totally agree that the RDV2 is a solid all around plane. It is one of the favorites of the COFPV crew out in Colorado, because it is so easy to launch, even at high altitudes (9000'). I like flying mine with a 4S 5000 maH lipo, but it also works well with my 4S2P Molicel 21700 9000 maH pack for longer flights.

Highly recommend DIYing a 4S LiIon using Molicel P45B or P30 cells. My dolphin with a 2807 1700kv happily pulls 40 amps for short bursts out of the P30b pack. Can also VTOL land my Heewing at as low as 3.2, sagging to 2.8 during hover. Molicels are seriously great.

For those of us that can't or don't really want to build our own batteries I've found upgrade energy makes a fantastic li ion battery.

A4S2P Molicel 21700 9000 MAH pack is rated for 90 amps for what it's worth (45A per cell)

Truly amazing flying and review, Lee! Beautiful footage! 😃 My only criticism about this airplane is that it deserves a pair of 2806 motors. They'd probably double the efficiency! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

    I agree 100% with your review. I might try some 9” props with my 2216 1100kv motors on a 4s 3300 lipo

Hey Lee. I think a better motor setup for the RDV2 would be SunnySky 2212-1250 with 7x6 or 1400kv with 8x6

@@Painless360 Amp draw is lower at the higher throttle settings. Take off I only see about 25amps max. Larger bi blade props are more efficient.

Perfect, thanks for explaining. Better can mean so many things and be very subjective. Best for some would be more speed, best for others is longer flights... Happy flying and thanks again for the suggestion!

Do you think differential thrust would help with the yaw control? I see that Differential thrust can be set up in INAV, but how much to use?

  • @Painless360

It would help, but I am not a fan of differential thrust with INAV, I've seen it be way too agressive at slow speeds. Maybe just mix in some rudder into the motor channels.... Happy flying

Wow ok. Seems like the current sensor on my old FC really was utterly f*ed if it draws 50A at full throttle for you, I remember mine drawing about 80A with the same stock 1800kv 7x4x3s. Could never get it to cruise below “12A” according to that FC. I knew it was overreporting but not by that much 😅 Definitely agree with the lack of yaw authority, and when I tried adding a bit more with differential thrust once it did not like that. I would actually disagree with your acrobatic rating though. At least with the throws I had it set up with it would do full rolls in like a second and could do really tight loops and turns. It’s also one of the most locked in models I’ve ever flown, more stable than the dolphin imo. A really great model indeed, though I do still prefer my dolphin, mostly for the higher cruise speed

I think it was your post that made me reconsider my use of LI-ION for the initial flight. Yours was definitely over-reading from the sounds of it (and my expewr4ince with this one here).

@@Painless360 Haha yes, Li-Ion would probably suffer with the stock setup. I wonder how well some 6045 or 6050 bi blades would do to reduce max current draw and increase cruise speed a little though, might be a way to use it with Li-Ion and maybe get >60 minutes flight times. Then again that might not provide enough thrust for reliable launches, hard to say. Great review though, I am tempted to buy one again now :)

@@Painless360 I use Li-Ion exclusively in my FPV planes these days. I bungee launch them so takeoff is easy and I have the max throttle allowed set to 85%. I usually fly for 45 minutes on a 6400 4S Li-Ion which gives me about 15 minute reserve. That 6400 Li-Ion replaced my 5000 4S Lipo.
