Late Winter Trout on CT's Salmon River

Спорт

Although it's springtime now, let's rewind almost a month to an unseasonably balmy day in late February when I headed out to Connecticut's beautiful Salmon River for some trout fishing.
Salmon River is one of those trout streams that a surprising number of you folks have requested to see on the channel and I aim to please! It's worth mentioning that I've actually fished Salmon River for years now, so these aren't unfamiliar waters. That said, I've never visited in the wintertime, so this was still something of a new experience for me.
I want to leave you guys with some notes about where this channel is going in the midst of this unprecedented Coronavirus scenario. So much has changed in such a short timeframe that it's still feeling pretty surreal. Maybe some of you folks have actually found more time to be on the river with everything else shut down; that's fantastic! As for me, I'm busy working from home and caring for my kindergartners who are out of school and require home instruction. There's no getting around it: until the world goes back to normal, my ability to produce content will be pretty severely limited. I'm going to do what I can, of course, but it's going to be slim pickings for the time being.
And with the school closures now extended to April 20 and my work-from-home orders being of indefinite duration, this is going to stretch on well past Opening Day and maybe even longer. I can only hope that you all stay safe and healthy, folks. And, with a little luck, maybe this is all behind us by May and I can get back to spending plenty of time on the water fishing and filming.

It's still a bit too cold so it's hit and miss on the Salmon, I live about 10 minutes from it. It's a put a taking kind of thing except for September to April. It's not my first choice to fish, it's just too crowded and later on, you get people swimming in all the good pools or just throwing rocks while you are trying to fish. On another note, Gary Lafontaine did a lot of his research for his book "Caddis Flies" 1981 on this river. It's a caddis river mainly. Next time try a Green Rock Worm a # 16 or 18 those would be present in good numbers now. Woolly buggers always work. Right now with all the rain its bank to bank and it's pretty much not fishable. We need a good week of 60 deg temps and '40s overnight. Get that water temp to near 50 and you will do a lot better. More so after they stock it, one of the reasons I don't fish it much. But it is one of the first streams along with the 8 mile in Devils Hopyard that I started my fly fishing career on, in 1963 I was 8 and it was all Joe Brooks Fault. I picked up the fly rod and have yet to put it down. # 18 Frenchies work really well, especially in the fall.

Well damn, you’ve been fishing this river way longer than I’ve even been alive, so I definitely defer to your experience. And you’re recommendation to go smaller on my nymphs here is one that has been echoed by a couple others. Next time I’m out there, I’ll go def go smaller if I’m not slinging streamers. Thanks for watching!

I wait for the Elwey to hit lower Leesville, then I hit upper dam. Mostly breeders/stockies in the late afternoon, May - late September, early morning is the best time. Salmon River has gone downhill over the years. Salmon Cove has INSANE Northern Pike fishing. Great video, nice to see other fisherman out here.

My favorite times to fish that river are in spring (starting about mid March to late May) and in the fall (Mid-late september to November.) Last year I had one of my best days in late September despite the low flows. Also late March this year was phenomenal even though the flows were the highest I've ever fished there. During that time I had a 1 fish day in a snow storm, an 8 fish day (out of one pool), and multiple 3-4 fish days. With flies smaller is generally better but in warmer weather I have had fish on dry flies up to size 10. Artificials work well too, small hot pink ice jigs produced well early this year for me.

Great video! Can’t believe I’m just finding your channel now 🤷🏻‍♂️. Anyway I’ll be in touch, we should hit the water very soon to do some fly fishing. As long as we keep a rod length apart lol

You should lengthen your leader try making it around 9ft and adding some tippet. Then you can tie 2 nymphs and a split shot on which produces more fish!

Fly Gods yeah, it’s funny that you’ll find me fishing a dry-dropper tandem rig on small streams all the time during warmer months, but I very rarely run a tandem nymph rig at all. There’s not really even a reason, I just sort of don’t do it. And I would concede that it probably costs me fish. I’ll have to start making it a point to double up more often. Thanks for watching.

I started watching your videos earlier this winter and it motivated me to go out and fish just about every day the weather permitted. Awesome videos! Ive fished mass and R.I. for years but just started in Connecticut. There’s some beautiful waters. Do you just fish rivers and streams? Or do you also venture into saltwater as well?

I mostly fish rivers and streams these days, though I’m planning to try and incorporate some more stillwater stuff this year. When it comes to saltwater, I dabble occasionally by just applying basic fishing principles to that environment, but I lack much specialized experience. Maybe I’ll get around to changing that at some point, too!

Well fishing the rivers and streams has opened up a whole new winter fishery to me. Would love to see some bass blowing up some top water flies. And if you ever want to venture into the salt feel free to message me. I launch my boat out of stonington and the fishing has been incredible the past few seasons. Stripers, blues, albies, and bonito on the fly all would be an awesome video.

just found your channel. I'm in RI and after 35+ years of whitewater, a car wreck ended that. I know quite a few rivers in CT from those days. Took up flyfishing 4 years ago...Will be hitting CT, thanks for all the info!!!!

Salmon river is more technical than the Farmington for fly fishing.....when stocked, easy pickings......early and late season, need to walk away from the easy access points and like he said, behind rocks and soft pockets. Using nymphs with indicators is a bitch on this river, many shallow areas, but great for dries and streamers. Another great video, thanks!

If I recall correctly, I was using my very basic and VERY affordable 9’ 5wt Cabela’s Bighorn combo with Cortland WF floating. Nothing fancy.
