This might be one of the least scary horror movies I've seen, but it's also one of the most entertaining. No fight/flight response triggered, just a slowly increasing sense of dread. It lingers for a while after you watch it. Instant classic.
@erniewyles8832
Ай бұрын
I hear ya. Personally, I think 'scary' is very subjective. Some folks go for jump scares and define that as scary. I personally think jump scares are the cheapest form of scare tactic. I want to feel creeped out, held in high suspense of impending doom, and want a good payoff. If a movie delivers that, I feel it succeeded in being good horror. This movie did that, it kept me intrigued, and is still good upon second watch. The points you mentioned are exactly why I would classify this movie as a good horror movie. Gore works, if it's needed to emphasize a different shock in a scene. By itself, it's not meant to initiate dread, but shock alone. That isn't scary, that's shocking for the sake of being shocking. I believe Late Night With the Devil will be a classic and is a great watch on a dark and spooky night. It's a great Halloween season movie for sure and an instant classic for that time of the year.

I like when an underrated actor who is always typecast as a side character, finally takes the leading role in a film and receives critical acclaim. The movie looks really good. The trailer reminded me of "The House of the Devil". Love letters to the 70s horror cinema.
David's acting in Prisoners, as an abused and disturbed suspect, was wonderful. Glad to see him getting more recognition.
Might as well parrot what I'm sure everyone else will be saying. This is reminding me of a programme in the UK in the 1990s called ‘Ghostwatch’. It portrayed a ‘live’ show of a haunting at a house, where a team went to investigate and all hell broke loose. Though it was made to entertain for Halloween, it caused some controversy, as some folk actually believed it. Ryan Hollinger on KZread summarises this well if you want to know more about it.
Saw this movie last year at SXSW. Happy to see it finally released and getting a positive response from critics and audiences. David Dastmalchian nails the leading role, and hopefully, he gets more in the future. Full Price.

Who cares for critics? They test during screenibgs and write generic, shallow, biased reviews. The only time DT seemed to have done that ij the 10 years i have watched them is with one love. Seemed to me they werent paying attention.
I saw this last night, and I don't think that the black and white scenes were meant to be viewed as part of the found-footage. (SPOILERS) None of what was happening in Jack's head, all leading up to him believing he was stabbing his wife, only to realize he was stabbing Lily, was part of the found-footage aspect of the movie. It's easy to believe that the scenes happening during commercial break weren't either. They were all having conversations that they definitely wouldn't be having if they knew they were being filmed. Jack was the host and would have known where all of the cameras were.

Easily one of the best horror movies of the year. this one's going to be making A LOT of top 10 lists. I think the difference was primarily in david dastmachian's incredible performance. the story wasn't all that unique. it was goofy and similar to so many others... but yeah, the performances were just great, the atmosphere was thick, the stage looked great, the aesthetic was perfect, the way it was shot aided in a lot of the creep factor. Yeah, this was an outstanding movie.
A mixture of analog, nostalgia, body, & occult horror all rolled up in one 👍

So Faust on a TV set. I like it. Sounds like a script from BBC2's 'Inside No.9'.
When Ian put that red velvet jacket on, it was like HE is the devil...
David also had a short cameo in a film called The Domestics that's so under the radar and deserves more attention.
This movie is a reminder how movies used to be, 90min, straight to the point, no obvious sequel bait, no cinematic universe, franchise building, entertaining throughout. Only didn't like the ending that much, thought it may go in a more original direction, but really a fun watch.

Some good normal Dastmalchian roles are 'a teacher' and 'all creatures here below' where he is the main lead.
The B&W parts are not found footage. It's the off the air events that took place.
@erniewyles8832
Ай бұрын
Right. Those are simply expository scenes for the viewer of the movie. The behind the scenes stuff mainly centers around the beginning background information that leads into the initial taping of the Night Owls Halloween Special. I do, however, feel the B&W parts could have been part of the behind the scenes stuff if they would have made these scenes work as though filmed by backstage surveillance cameras. This could easily have been done, provided closed captioning is put in to better make out what is being said (because the recordings would have been poor quality, along with the minimal quality sound). Done like this, the B&W scenes would have totally worked. That said, as it was presented works, and I was enthralled during these scenes as I knew they would be short (commercial breaks) and would provide context for what would be seen next.
So damn happy to see the mad love for this film and for Dastmalchain to dominate the cinema. Well deserved. This was a beautiful love letter to my childhood growing up in the Satanic 70's where the devil could pop up on any talk show or In Search Of episode.

that's the best way to view a movie. Look at original movie trailers from the 80's. They gave simple premise, and nothing more. You wanted to know more...then go watch the movie in a theater. Full trailers then were equivalent to teaser trailers now. Nowadays, full trailers give all the points of the movie and leave with only the last 15 - 30 minutes to know what will happen. It's sad, actually. So this movie catching people off guard is a breath of fresh air. I'm hopeful other movies come out like that. The First Omen is another movie that had minimal exposure prior to release, and it is quite good as well.
The black and white parts were NOT found footage, those parts are the behind the scenes, fly on the wall stuff that nobody sees but the movie audience.
@erniewyles8832
Ай бұрын
i would have to say "yes and no" to what you said. Yes, they are NOT part of the found footage. Yes, they are meant to provide exposition to the movie audience and are filmed "fly on the wall" style. But NO, they are not behind the scenes. The narrator, at the beginning states what follows is made of found footage of the last taping and behind the scenes footage. I feel the behind the scenes footage is what is presented as "Jack's introductory story, with the Bohemian Grove stuff, and the footage of him reacting to his wife's death, as filmed by news reporters".
Everything about Korey’s comments screamed “full price” to me lol

Finally watched it online for free The film takes its sweet time to draw the line between staged and real ruthless ambition The real horror surrounds this tv show host Jack with losing his popularity doing anything to make it last It's technical presentation is impressive being shot in full frame format along with old tv resolution The last half with the possessed girl is the best bit and they manage to make late night television truly terrifying A wonderful blend of old school 1970s film techniques, satire in the talk show business, and horrific special effects Plenty of things surrounding egomania, grief, and terror David Dastmalchian gives a very unnerving performance switching from proud to confident to downright befuddled and frightened The ending may serve as frustrating for most but oh boy does this one leave an impression for the genre @26:50😂😂😂

Thank you I was thinking the same. There was one more movie/show I saw him in also I just can’t remember and too lazy to google
I do agree that the black and white scenes do hinder the found footage angle, but at the same time i do think the serve the story immensely. I just think they could have took some inspired elements from even modern depictions of analog horror args in the cinematography, like make it look more natural in the way these bits of information are recorded, like from a distance and the audio is picking up conversation from afar, or they could have hidden just a little more of the behind the scenes if they really wanted to commit to the found footage angle.
The debate surrounding the use of AI is not so much about whether it is noticeable, but rather that it provides a cheaper alternative for producers who don't want to hire a real artist.
I kinda agree. The behind the scenes black and white should've been shot in the same aspect ratio and been even more grainy yet still in black and white.

I say it should have been presented as grainy security camera footage from security cameras strewn throughout the back stage area.
It literally states that the episode was planned to be a big comeback and that what you see is the master tape AND behind the scenes footage from the team. It wasn't an oversight.
I saw the movie a few hours ago. It's not too long, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't feel like there was any time wasted or anything, so i really appreciate that. Definitely a fun fun watch.
This is why found forage horror movies are the best. They take a horror trope played out and turn it into something with a new feel and ambition.
This movie was really cool and refreshing in its presentation. I definitely enjoyed it
The last time the exorcist had a good drop was emily rose
I don't think the black and white scenes were the found footage. No one was recording it so it doesn't make sense.
Fun hidden thing in the movie is when Mini is in the mirror while they pass it behind the scenes
3:09, 17:48, 26:45, and 35:57 LOL
Theres a UK anthology Series called Inside No.9, and this movie felt like a long episode of that, but not a good one...(there is a pretty good episode called 3x3 which is quite similar in theme)... The movie had a fantastic premise, period design and pastiche of the 70s chat shows, and the lead actor did a very good job, but it was neither funny nor creepy nor scary enough... Feels like a waste of a great idea
Thank you for bringing this movie to my attention, I didn’t know I had a preference when it came to horror but this definitely hit it
Loved it.
