Late Night Saturday: History & Commentary for SNL S1E7

Комедия

In this installment we take a look at perhaps the best and most noteworthy episode NBC's Saturday Night has had to date, with Guest Host Richard Pryor! It was a week full of acrimony and paranoia, with the cast and crew walking on egg shells while the host insisted on bringing along his own writers and actors, but it produced an episode widely considered to be the show's first true classic.

In the 80’s, when then ex-cast member, Eddie Murphy hosted SNL they did a short film called, “White Like Me” where he put on white face and lived life as a white man. He actually ended up looking like Geraldo Rivera.

The origin of the Francisco Franco being still dead joke goes back to the news media coverage of his illness leading up to his death. For many weeks they reported in different ways about how near to death he was .They started talking about plans for his funeral and that went on for a long time.

My friend and I watched this episode. We had dropped acid about 40 minutes earlier. Then this monologue happened. Initially, we thought, "how did he know?" After that brief moment of paranoia we settled down and watched the rest. Brilliant episode! Something else happened, it was subtle. We realized half way through that the NBC affiliate had not played any commercials. We got to listen to and watch the house band play music when the commercials were supposed to air. You could say it was magical. 🙂

Best comment I've had in a while, Alexander! Thanks for the memory... (They had trouble selling commercials for this episode in some markets; they might not have had many to show!)

It's a shame that Richard Pryor never hosted "SNL" again-I thought he was fabulous!

Good series! One technical observation. The music volume could be lowered so your excellent commentary is not overshadowed.

I appreciate the feedback. I think you'll find as the Season progresses that the music is mixed a little lower in the mix; it's probably the most common criticism I got early on! ;) Thanks for your support!
