Late Night Saturday: History & Commentary for SNL S1E21

This installment sees the return of the well-loved host Buck Henry, and lots of denim from musical guest Gordon Lightfoot. They'd just won their first Emmys, so I imagine it was a hell of a week! Stay tuned next week for what should've been the season closer, but regrettably wasn't!

Somehow on Imdb it says that actress Judith Light was in the audience this day. I don't see her anywhere, this was way before she became famous. I wonder why imdb mentions her

Interesting tidbit! My guess would be that Light mentioned it in an interview somewhere, as it's not mentioned in any of the material I've read on the episode...

I think that the scene from the episode where Lightfoot goes over the song limit by trying to do a 3rd song was not mentioned. At the end of “Spanish Moss”, Lightfoot and his band launch into another song, but the host Buck Henry rushes out to the set to tap Lightfoot on the shoulder saying that they had only time for two numbers from him. Lightfoot objects and says “well, since things were going well, we thought we’d do an extra song”. Buck then responds with “I hate to be a pain, but I’m gonna have to say no. I’m sorry.” Lightfoot then rants “look we got on an airplane, we came all the way from Toronto….” Buck gets irritated, and snaps for the Samarai tailor to come up to the set, and slice through Lightfoot’s guitar strings with cutting wire.

You're right! I don't know why I didn't mention it; TBH, my notes for these final episodes of Season One are pretty old at this point, so I think I might've missed a few other things in these final few episodes...

We’re you being sarcastic about Charles Grodin? I only ask because he did eventually host, and if you have no idea about it; I’m not going to say anymore.

I'm aware of (but have not yet seen) Grodin's hosting performance, which is supposed to be awful. Even though he didn't work well on the program, I still generally think he could handle deadpan humor such as what Buck specialized in pretty well... ;) (I"m looking forward to the Grodin dumpster-fire, BTW. Thanks for not spoiling it!) ;)
