    Though Craig liked the robot idea of course, there was no guarantee JRT would actually be a live speaking sidekick. After a tentative, not always successful week of nightly interactions (including a bit making Geoff the "guest"), this segment put the question to rest, and the "tweetmail" segment became consistently the funniest thing on TV. Changed everything. Legend!

    Alexander Zhivkov - idk, did you watch the episode? It got pretty awkward between them,and then Craig cracked that joke... I love Tony, but I could see him not coming back if he didn’t vibe with Craig. His show didn’t get THAT much exposure, after all...

    Alexander Zhivkov - but this episode was Tony’s last appearance, even though Craig’s show was on for another 4 years. And previously he had been on every 1-2 years. Why do YOU think he never came back? 🤔

    I thought he cemented that role while the show was somewhere else, on the proverbial road. At least that's what I remember reading. They had to have him do it live (goddammit!) because they weren't in a studio or something. I'd also like to take this opportunity to say they should have called the robot character Josh Robot Thompson. Ya see what I did there!?

  • @acarlovonsexron1994

    @acarlovonsexron1994

    For the better part of a year leading up to this, after the character was first created, Josh would do a number of prerecorded phrases triggered off an IPad by head writer Bob Oschack in studio tapings, but did several "field segments" such as movie premiers where he'd operate and voice Geoff live interacting with people, leading up to a segment they taped in Vegas one weekend with Craig where the two "riffed" for the first time. It went so well Josh asked Craig if he could do it in studio, to which Craig enthusiastically approved, something they both felt for a while was the next evolution of the character, but which the writers and producers would discourage when prompted. They did it for the first time the following week, 4/14/2011 was the date, you can find it on here, Kristen Bell was the guest (once again), and they continued doing it sporadically on and off leading to this show a month later that cemented the role, as you said.

    @@rudyredcat425 From what I can tell I would disagree, he honestly just seems like he isn't completely at home with the environment he's in. He doesn't seem to enjoy being playfully insulted, he's probably a more sensitive type, and I don't think banter is really his thing; I believe he realizes as well that the show is more relaxed and so he wants to be able to fit into that vibe and just talk about stuff, but he doesn't bounce off Craig too successfully. I think he's a shier type who doesn't blossom well on a show such as this, he's more of a subtle comedy kind of guy
