Late Kick Live Ep 489: Perfect CFB Conferences | Saban Comments | Spring Scoop | Worst Coaching Take

Спорт

Late Kick Live Ep 488 features Josh Pate reacting to Nick Saban giving the contributing factors that led to his retirement. Does this signify it was simply time for Saban to move on or perhaps bigger issues that need to be addressed? Josh also attempts to realign College Football conferences tonight to make the sport look more like it should while shrinking conference sizes to make sure everyone faces each other annually in league play. What are some of the worst head coaching criticisms we hear today? Why are Brian Kelly, Ryan Day, and Lincoln Riley so often targeted? How good can Mike Elko and Texas A&M be in 2024? All that plus some under-the-radar non-conference games and a look at some initial spring practice intel from across the country. I LOVE your re-conference alignment!!! It keeps value on conference games because you have to win the conference to make the playoffs! And the playoff people still get their playoff!!! You truly need to be the college football commissioner/dictator!!!

JP really ought to put Dabo in front of a mic. Not sure Dabo would agree to it but being that JP feels football needs some improvements made to it (and i agree 💯), Dabo is the only coach i know of that has recruited guys that are NOT jumping ship on him. Why? Because he still recruiting the same way he always has and has gone after the type of young men he wants on his team. He is doing it the right way imho. The beauty of college football is that you can easily LOvE your team every year even if they win 3 games a season. Why? Because historically they have always been young men and women (obviously not in football)"not" getting paid which just hits differently than an NFL team loaded with millionaires with hit or miss attitudes kneeling during the anthem- and yeah, i know that kneeling has since passed. Tbh i need to see the pros cry after big playoff losses. When i see that, i know who still cares and who doesn't. College? Everybody is crying and oddly enough its a beautiful example of team love

Best show in awhile JP. Your cfb realignment should happen *today*. Genius. I theorize that the current 'situation' on cfb is a direct result of a sever lack of coherent and competent leadership by the NCAA. Conferences are taking the bull by the horns themselves. The 10-or-trash segment was excellent, too. I've been a Penn State fan my entire life, and I'm always getting into this exact fight about James Franklin. He doesn't need defending. For those who can read between the lines, he's doing a stellar job with what was clearly an unaligned mess at the university level when he was hired. Some of those situations are still being sorted out. There's always a few doomers who pop off without perspective, and it's embarrassing. The PSU football media is only marginally better. Thanks for taking a principled stand on this subject. 😄😄

Josh I agree with you on 7 conferences, I would just shift around the teams a little bit. If the conferences would negotiate as 7 conferences, they would get more money than the will as just the power 2. Pretending that everyone would get paid the same, allows for teams to move from conference to conference. ACC - Duke North Carolina Wake Forest North Carolina State Clemson Virginia Maryland Georgia Tech South Carolina Florida State South Carolina was in the ACC and has rivalries with the Carolina schools as well as the big in state battle with Clemson. The question has to be asked who is South Carolina's main SEC rival? Is there anyone Gamecock fans would rather beat than Clemson or North Carolina? Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Florida State could all play their rivals to end the year. Big East Miami Boston College Virginia Tech Pitt Syracuse West Virginia Cincinnati UCF Rutgers UConn The Big East is the most complicated conference. You would start with how they left, the Hurricanes, Eagles, and Hokies left first. Syracuse, Pitt, and West Virginia were out about a decade later. Cincinnati stayed until it become the American. UCF became good enough to join. Rutgers has had success in the Big East (Not much, but some) and UConn is in because of their basketball program. Basketball would be a problem, but you could work around it. Kick out DePaul and the other new members and go to a 16 team league in basketball. Big 10 Ohio State Michigan Michigan State Penn State Indiana Purdue Northwestern Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Yes Iowa is gone. The Hawkeyes will join their in state brethren and their biggest rival in Nebraska in a new conference. If they make the same money, the Hawkeyes would probably be okay with that, the academic prestige is better in the Big Ten, so that might make them stay. If Iowa stays in the Big Ten, then Penn State moves to the Big East and Rutgers gets dropped from the Big East. Border Conference (Yes that is the new name) Oklahoma Oklahoma State Nebraska Iowa Iowa State Kansas Kansas State Missouri Colorado BYU The Big 6 was originally something called the Border Conference, it moved around some teams here and there, but it will go back to its original name to keep the conference at 10 teams and avoid numerical confusion. Iowa has a choice to make. Are their main rivals Nebraska and Iowa State or are there Wisconsin and Minnesota? I've met a number of Hawkeye fans that would rather be Nebraska than beat them (Winning multiple conference and National Titles) but Iowa State means more than either Big Ten rivalry does. Oklahoma does not fit the Southwest Conference as they were in it for 1 year and left. That year being around the time of World War 1. BYU playing Colorado to finish the year and Nebraska playing Oklahoma is how the conference should do rivalry week on Thanksgiving day. Pac 10 USC UCLA Stanford Arizona Arizona State Oregon Washington Utah San Diego State UNLV Major changes to the Pac 10. Cal hasn't sold out Memorial Stadium since 2012 (Against Alabama State 90% of the stadium was full) the last time they had a full sellout was against Ohio State. The Bears have won 2 bowl games in the last 15 years and qualified for 6 total. Outside of a Jeff Tedford run where the rest of the Pac 10 forgot to play football, Cal has historically struggled. Name any Cal alumni in the NFL outside of Rogers and Golf. They also never qualified for the Pac 12 Title Game. Oregon State never qualified for the Pac 12 Title Game. They have also been outgrown by Oregon. It used to be the Civil War where two programs of equal talent levels battled it out. Now it has become a game where if Oregon State wins it is clearly an upset. Same thing with Washington State and Washington. Seattle outgrew Pullman and the rest of the state favors the Huskies. The Pacific Northwest does not produce enough talent for their to be 4 teams in the Power level. Yes this year all 4 of them were ranked, but this was the exception not the rule. Utah stays because they have become a mainstay in the Pac-12 race. San Diego State just built themselves a new football stadium and made a National Title game in basketball. UNLV was just gifted the Death Star and basketball Team USA plays their basketball training in Vegas, if they can ever put it together they have a chance to be special. If you keep the Pac-10 as it was, USC will look to leave again. The Trojans destroyed the original PCC (Kicking out Montana and Idaho) then they whined again and got the Arizona schools to join. The conference needs new challenges. For those of you wondering why Stanford over Cal its this simple. When Stanford is great in basketball they compete with UCLA, when they are great in football they compete with USC, when they are bad at either one, they compete with Cal. Southwest Conference Texas Texas A&M Texas Tech Houston Baylor TCU SMU Arkansas LSU Tulane Just like with South Carolina, who is LSU"s primary rival in the SEC? Its not Auburn or Alabama they both would rather play each other. Arkansas and Texas A&M are their end of the season games. Tulane gets in for their academics as the Northwestern/Stanford/Vanderbilt of the conference. The SWC used to be the 4 public and the 4 private schools. Rice is dropped because food doesn't deserve to be at the Power 7 table. Adding LSU gives Arkansas a natural rival out of conference, Oklahoma is not Arkansas' rival. Tulane gets included, but if LSU refuses, I'd be okay with adding Rice or even considering New Mexico to add another team from out of state. SEC Florida Georgia Tennessee Vanderbilt Auburn Alabama Ole Miss Mississippi State Kentucky Louisville If you really want to put LSU in over Louisville, moving the Cardinals to the Big East, kicking out UConn I'm okay with that. I just feel like Louisville fits into the SEC mold. Vandy and Tennessee together. Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Alabama and Auburn. Florida and Georgia have their big out of conference rivalries. This is what I'd do if I was in charge. Luckily I'm not, but I'd vote for Josh to be commissioner of football.

Josh, was there another time in which every starting player on a team could get drafted to the NFL? Saban’s roster stacking seems like an anomaly. I believe the free market of NIL will rebalance college athletics in a way similar to when being the best on any team created a better chance of making it to the NFL than being a role player on the best team. Forgive me for the incomplete thought. It’s a small comment window and I write this in hope that if you agree, you might be able to expand on the idea.

That's what I'm talking about @latekickwithjoshpate. A show with some variety. Conference realignment looks good minus Kentucky being SEC. Vandy should have been left on SEC. Kentucky should have been in Big10. Otherwise, it's a great line-up. As for Arkansas being 6 games win total, that is shakey ground for ole Sam. 7+ wins is his only hope for another year guaranteed. Win 5 or less, I think a new coach will be on the sidelines for 2025.

See I’m perfectly okay with all these conferences and a playoff. As Texas they can stay home n the Big 8 like once upon a time as long as we’re playing them. Also Texas tech and Texas A&M bc believe it or not Josh even tho we’ve disagreed in pissed that we’re not playing them anymore as a Texas fan. Also I’m in the minority amongst Texas fans bc most couldn’t care less. I’m like you and rivalries in college aren’t exactly equal but we should play every year. We also need con vs con weeks too so we see great out of con games to really determine who’s who and what’s what. I also in my perfect world don’t want one or two losses making it to where your season is done. We’ve all seen teams who were playing hot at the end of the year who could give teams at the top a run for thier money. One example is 2004 Texas who won the 2005 championship. So gotta expand the playoff. There’s more examples then that too just have to go back and examine more teams.

The correct way to restructure CFB is for the SEC and Big 10 to swallow whatever teams they want and then leave the NCAA

I want the WAC back Utah, BYU, Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Nebraska, San Diego State, Boise State!!! PAC-8,(keep it in the pacific coast) SWC should have Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in it!!! Big 8 would be Arkansas, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Vandy, and Northwestern!!! Say to Notre Dame if you want to be in the playoffs then join the Big Ten!!! Just saying!!!

What I've noticed is the people complaining about Saban's statement of CFB is coming from people only concerned with $$$. They think they are entitled for $$$ and the only that ever matters in life is $$$. They don't even stop to think about how serious Saban was about being a proper life mentor with this players. He talks about it all the time and the players who won Natty's with him always take that way about being coached under him. New generation kids coming up and their parents are only concerned with $$$. A lot more than just this sport isn't looking good at the moment.

Even a 30 or 40 year old head coach should be fully equipped to say farewell if it bothers them as much as it did Nick. Maybe they don’t have a mansion and vacation home(s), but the millions they make could be more than enough to retire early, or switch to a life of relative leisure.

Ouch, gut punch to BYU fans by tossing us aside into independence after we finally get in to the Big XII. First you rank us below the two Arizona schools and Colorado somehow in your three-year rankings, and now this! If the Big 8 has to stay at eight teams, let Utah fans enjoy independence for a decade and see how they do! 🙂

If you’re going to reinvent the sport/alignment, then scrap the old names and baggage. We lost regionalism, so let’s reinvent it regionally. N/S/E/W/NE/SE/SW/NW Limit the size to 8 (7 games) but orchestrate more inter conference games.

they should be an 8 or 9 win team annually with runs at a title every once in awhile, but they arent. similar to a nebraska or texas a&m they just dont do what they should and win ball games.

Again that’s your opinion what’s best for the sport Josh. Again I don’t agree with everything that’s happening but yeha things have needed changing for awhile and we don’t run from competition around here bc we might lose a game. Again like I’ve said many of times on your show and you said on this we could’ve had a middle ground decades ago for college football. Guess who people like traditionalist thought it was perfect and didn’t need change so no middle ground was allowed. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm So the pushback is so real it had to be to reach middle bc again people like you were so far to one side it had to go this far to middle out The show honestly has been better especially the last one bc it was all about football. Let’s just talk ball. I rather hear and Montana St and all their players for an hour

The college football Saban knew and loved was oversigning, telling kids to hit the door when injured or outplayed, and all while being paid half a billion dollars and the players got nothing.

How do you as a player ALREADY APART OF THE TEAM, walk into the Greatest Of All Times office and ask how much are you going to pay me? My goodness what happened to this sport? You never valued anything he tried to instill in you. EDIT I love Pates Restructure. I love the old retro conference rebirth with it. The only thing I don't like is the Big8 playing 7 conference games vs everyone else's 9
