One of the most well-read music directors of Hindi film industry, Chitragupt Shrivastava was born in Bihar’s Chhapra district. A double Master of Arts in Economics and Journalism, he also received training in music at the Bhatkande College of Music, Lucknow. After working as a lecturer in Patna for a few years, Chitragupt made his way to Mumbai. In the beginning, he assisted another alumnus of the Bhatkande College, S.N. Tripathi and also sang songs for him.
Though his first film as an independent music director was “Toofan Queen” (1946), it was the song “Ada Se Jhoomte Hue” from “Sindbad The Sailor” (1952) that brought him recognition. Another rather popular of his compositions was “Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi” from “Bhabhi” (1957). The year 1959 brought with it the film “Barkha”, which proved to be another feather in Chitragupt’s cap. Songs like “Ek Raat Mein Do Do Chand Khile” and “Sur Badle Kaise” instantly struck a chord with listeners.
When “Main Chup Rahoongi” (1962) was released, songs like “Chand Jaane Kahan Kho Gaya”, turned Chitragupt into a household name. He also composed music for the first film made in Bhojpuri, his native language - “Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo” (1962). In the song “Itni Naazuk Na Bano” from “Vaasna” (1968), one can note that the versatile Mohammed Rafi not only sang, but emoted the song, under Chitragupt’s music direction. Chitragupt's legacy continued in the film industry through his sons - music directors Anand - Milind.
A heart attack in 1968 and a paralytic attack in 1974 left him weak, and he passed away in 1991.

Apart from the selection of beautiful songs,it is interesting to know about the great Chitragupta Ji.He stands amongst top most Music Directors of India,though not rated for unknown reasons.We,his lovers,recognize and rate him in top most.
One of the most educated and talented composer bollywood ever produced but was always under rated. He produced some of the most amazing songs which cant be compared in centuries to come. RIP CHITRAGUPT SHRIVASTAV saheb

Bilkul sahi. Film Patang ka gaana "Rang Dil Ki Dhadkan" is just fabulous.
All time great music director Sri Chitraguptji's compositions are immortal, melody is at its best long live his music
My favourite composer. Lesser known and less celebrated unfortunately. Some of the songs in this collection I have known but listening after long gap - about 60 years🙂. Thanks for this bouquet 🙇!

Chitragupta is highly talented and king of melodies. Unfortunately he did not receive enough recognition , he is due. He is an unsung hero. My tributes this great music director.

A highly educated but in this cruel bollywood where only nepotism works and art has no value , he didnt get his proper dues like any govt medals but his work will be remembered for centuries to come. No songs from the bhojpuri he made a double for Lata ji in his song...dil ka diya, unusual scale for Lata as told to me by Anand. He was Lata jis personal favorite too. He Chanda mama arre aao from bhouji is a personal favorite of andalib sultanpuri

एक फ़िल्म थी चांद मेरे आजा..... इस फ़िल्म मैं लता जी से एक गाना चित्रगुप्तजी ने कंपोज किया था.... शब्द थे .... सजना, ओ साजन, मैं तो हार गई दिल हार के, इस गाने मैं मात्र एक संगीत वाद्य का उपयोग कर पूरा गाना चित्रगुप्तजी ने बना डाला। वो वाद्य थे कप, जिसमे पानी भरा होता है, उसे लकड़ी की दो छड़ी से बजाया जाता है। ये एक आश्चर्यजनक मिसाल थी फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्रीज मैं। इसे संगीत के कई दिग्गजों ने बहुत सम्मान दिया।

May be Hindi film industry is right from beginning mentally bloked catagerally A,B,C and thus talented many md suffered a lot and choose low budget movie producers.2)in 60s 70s the most so called A grade were choosing higher paired shankar jaikishan,naushad,sdb,or ka,lp,IN this bias attitude of producers many talent suffered highly and are become unrated like chitragupt,vinod,sonik omi,even madan mohan,roshan,robin chaterji,sardar malik,ganesh,narendra sharma,etc.etc. I think even out of this many could be act ghost md for others renowned md

Chitraguptji songs are best to listen on radio. Melodious. But in theotre their effect was very slow. Here Shankar Jaikishan dominated. Same case was also with Kalyanji Anandji. Though their songs are nice and melodious, effect was slow. Public got bored in the theotre. Effect is more important.
