Roll it Richard! Bracken hates being rolled as it breaks the stems and bleeds out, keep doing that when it's new growth so roughly end of April may time if possible

You like myself here in tipperary Ireland. I have a railway line across the field from me. I can make out time in morning. When trains pass on cork dublin line I hear train hooting when it pulls out of my town. Ever hour.

Our landscape is desert, so when we get the 'grass tornados' we call them dust devil's. Thanks for the banter, I thought the hedge history was interesting. 🙂

Funky farmer! You adjust the top link, but you also should tighten the right lower lift arm. So the mower sticks out more. So your mower gains with.

We always used kerosene on them, my dad would dig a hole close to the roots and put the kerosene in the hole cover it back up and it would kill it out and would not come back

Bracken on the hillside rough grazing was always an issue when I lived on a farm. Usually controlled by cutting back and making sure the soil was not acidic by spreading lime to raise the pH as bracken thrives in acidic soil. But I am sure you know that !

Regarding the Bracken issue! There is a good information on nature.scot on control/ eradication of this invasive plant. My reading of it would suggest the following. 1) Decide the method or methods you wish to use given the location access and environmental aspects. 2) These can be Mechanical ie. Cutting/ Crushing/ Bruising/ Plough or Tillage. 3) The other option is Chemical Treatment using the Herbicide Asulam. This can be applied by Machine/ By Hand/ or by Spot-Gun 2MLACCU-DOS. With the Mechanical method the idea is to expose the plant roots over the winter months in order to kill off the root system. The Chemical method will attack the plant during its growth period. Signs maybe required when using chemicals in some locations. Repeat over 5 years to eradicate / control this Toxic Carcinogenic woodland plant.

If you count the number of species in a 100 foot length of hedge and multiply by 100, it gives the approximate age of the hedge, So five species adds up to 500 years old.

Interesting! I forgot that SW England has been cultivated for more than 500 years. I am the first generation to build on my property in Florida. Mind you, the property had been cleared, cattle grazed, fences put up and mowed prior to my purchase, but Florida was free range until the 1950s. Cattle would get out on the roads as would the alligators...

Bracken : Two herbicides are recommended for bracken control: asulam (Asulox) and glyphosate, and lime yer field. We have tons of that along our road side here in New Hampshire 🇺🇲. Many verities, some are edible fiddleheads early spring around Mother's day as it first emerges. You've got spirits👻👻💀 in that field. Must be why that farmer rents it out. Too scary for him👻👻💀👻💀👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🌲
