I believe Jon Hassell was the most important jazz trumpet player of this time. All the other jazzers have been playing last-century's jazz. Hassel, by contrast, continued the jazz tradition of moving forward and innovating. I can hear the tradition of jazz in all of his playing and writing.

This quartet is a reason why i still i have a great belief in the love of music, why it should matter and in the greater scheme of things, why it should resonate in the heart and soul of all those who care about the simplicity of what life means. You listen to something that pulls at your heart and try to apply it to your thoughts and dreams, a simple philosophy that integrates and inspires. The cast of Jon, Elvind, Jan and Kheir-Eddine create the most wonderful sound that evokes the belief that i have.

A haunting sound, which i first heard on a late night music programme on BBC Radio 3 in the UK about 12 years ago. I love the hint of Jazz, it's tempting to think it's the opening music to a film which has a scene with rain pouring on dark, cobbled pavements somewhere in Edinburgh, a streetlamp is reflected in a small, shimmering puddle, footsteps come and go, soft voices seep from a shabby window and there's a hint of a sharp intake of breath.......

Beneath the Eastern splitting of the octave, I also hear a type of Miles Davis' In A Silent Way on this. He has also done some incredible stuff with Brian Eno. Perfect music for doing stuff without any words to remind you of basic mundane Earth. Jon Hassell is incredible. Another artist who effects me the same way is Jeff Greinke, "Cities in Fog 1 & 2". Listening to both these artists' music while driving (portable isolation) collects the surrounding environment into an emotional event, regardless of what is happening. However, moody weather does help. What a treat to see this performance clip.

In my last ambient sitar concert I must acknowledge the tremendous influence of Jon Hassell .I make indian music the same way he makes jazz.More technically speaking , the simple use of a pitch-shifter at the fourth always give strange melodies.

Pitch shifts is indeed very special. Jon often used multiple shifts creating chromatic chords. Really his thing. He did this mainly with Eventide effects. But his embouchure in the mouthpiece in combination with the scales (very Indian) and pitch shifting make him so unique. Sad he is no longer with us.... His music stays though ❤️

@@10dennis10 Thank you for that info.
I first heard this piece on a tv show I watched a couple years ago. To this day it remains one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
Fantastique d'évocations... un RAVEL MODERNE ;-)))
one sound , a unique sound !
Uno de esos enormes magos del sonido que siguen por ahí, sin hacer mucho ruido; pero si mucha nuez, llevando la música a los confines posibles de la belleza.

Agreed
I purchased the digital album a few years back, and thought it was all studio work. I am quite amazed to see this performed live.

I have just got the digital album too and a few of the tracks on there are also live. Sublime stuff!
pure beauty ......paired with wisdom
I sadly only discovered Jon Hassell about 2 Months ago, so beautiful and I wish I had heard some back in the early '80s. Music streaming service algorithms are good for something!
holy doughnuts this is so awesome how do I only find out about this now???
...meraviglia!
I sincerely hope I'm being as creative as Jon is when I'm that age.
SUBLIME!!!..Jon a la eternidad!
I had the honor of being in the Performance Space at Wexner Center audience at Columbus, OH during this 2009 tour. In my 40 plus years of live musical listening experience I consider this performance my favorite, hands down.
this is absolutely amazing ...electronic and analog/acoustic soundscapes create a sound you will never forget....thank you , Jon!
really , supper FANTASTIC..., i`ve been a J.H. fan 30 years... about.
A fan for decades. Your music Jon has traveled with me and made me travel.

I'm glad music like this exists. It really pushes the boundaries of what we know as music. This was my first introduction to John hasssell and after hearing the rest of his stuff I have to say, it's definitely good.
He turned 80 on 22 March...Happy belated birthday, Jon!
Gorgeous piece of music.
This is a great morning alarm song
RIP. This is so beatiful it hurts.
In my last ambient sitar concert I must acknowledge the tremendous influence of Jon Hassell .I make indian music the same way he makes jazz.More technically speaking , the simple use of a pitch-shifter at the fourth always give strange melodies.

Intriguing to hear of your "altered" Indian music, Ujjaya. Is any of it on KZread?

Pitch shifts is indeed very special. Jon often used multiple shifts creating chromatic chords. Really his thing. He did this mainly with Eventide effects. But his embouchure in the mouthpiece in combination with the scales (very Indian) and pitch shifting make him so unique. Sad he is no longer with us.... His music stays though ❤️
This is amazing. I only discovered Jon's music through hearing him on David Sylvian and Tears for fears albums. What a Sad loss 😢

absolutely perfect
I heard this on college radio at 2 am while half asleep. I though this was the music that dreams were made of. I was on a different planet. In the realm between awake and asleep this album really busts your moorings loose.
RIP Jon Hassell 27th June 2021
Beautiful. Powerful.
one of the greatest!
awesom is not enough. and the sound quality from live show - really Swiss! I'm in heaven.
Jon Hassell is a Genius... Nuff said.
Elegant frisson. So lovely.
infinito maestro
Thank you so much for this. Merci. Gracias.
A genius...as ever!!!
I heard this for the very first time last year on the "Echoes" progressive ambient music program on National Public Radio. It was just after midnight and I was on the highway, driving in and out of patches of thick fog. Needless to say, the music and circumstances suited each other *perfectly*.
Legend, Rest in Peace!
RIP Jon Hassell
Utterly brilliant. Thank you!!!...
