LAST NIGHT IN SOHO Cinema Intro + Q&A | TIFF 2021

Фильм және анимация

The team behind LAST NIGHT IN SOHO in conversation with TIFF in advance of its premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Edgar Wright wickedly reflects ’60s Swinging London in this kaleidoscopic psycho-thriller about two young artists entwined across time.
The 46th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 9 to 18, 2021. For more, visit tiff.net.
With their spectacular precision and visual wit, Edgar Wright’s movies - from SHAUN OF THE DEAD to BABY DRIVER - have been embraced by genre fans, arthouse cinephiles, and popcorn moviegoers alike. He has a singular talent for generating pure joy in the cinema. LAST NIGHT IN SOHO crafts a delicious new flavour from surprising ingredients: the pop thrills of 1960s Swinging London, the darker pleasures of psychological horror, and a very contemporary story of a young woman defining who she aims to be in the world.
Writing with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917), Wright draws us into the orbit of Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), a 1960s-obsessed young woman who ventures from the English countryside to study fashion at a prestigious London academy. Ostracized by her school’s chic cliques, Eloise retreats from her dormitory to a rented flat in Soho, where her life becomes psychically intertwined with that of Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy), a singer living in 1966. Matt Smith (The Crown) turns up as Jack, a smooth night owl promising to help Sandy achieve stardom. But as Sandy’s descent into the demimonde and Eloise’s nocturnal wanderings intensify, overlapping traumas turn both present and past into a vivid swirl of danger.
Drawing from the psychotronic cinema of the 1960s and ’70s, and cleverly featuring appearances from actual ’60s icons such as Dame Diana Rigg, Margaret Nolan - both in their final roles - Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham, Wright’s first full-on foray into horror is a dazzling and dizzying thriller.
Edgar Wright was born and raised in Dorset, England. His early work includes feature debut A Fistful of Fingers (95) and the television comedies Asylum (96) and Spaced (99-01). His many films include Shaun of the Dead (04), Hot Fuzz (07), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (10), The World’s End (13), Baby Driver (17), documentary The Sparks Brothers (21), and Last Night in Soho (21).

Thomasin basing her performance off of Rooney Mara in The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo is something I never expected to hear but now makes me love her and Last Night in Soho even more.

Billy Wilder once said about legacy, "If people are still talking about the film years after its release, then you have done your job."

Just watched the movie at the Brussels premiere ! GODDAMN !!! What an incredible movie !!! It's been a long time I haven't seen such a gripping movie AND being shot so gorgeously on top of that ! Everything, from the camerawork, the fantastic sets, the choreographies, the actors, the dances, the colors, the musical environment... everything just oozed quality ! Definitely a movie that will stay in the memories. (and knowing it's Diana Rigg's last performance makes it even more heavy in meaning) !

We live in the dumbest timeline, but we also live in the timeline that produced Edgar Wright… I’m not even mad.

This film was absolutely amazing I am surprised at what he pulled off in camera. It's so different than what's normally in the American Cinema. After doing this film I am an Edgar Wright fan now.

@@jauxsef I'm planning to see it this weekend. I find both Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson to be incredible directors with unique styles. While the second half of Soho was subpar, the first half had had amazing shots and a mystery to it.
