Lassie Dog Training System

Bob Weatherwax shares the unique dog training secrets he and his father Rudd perfected over 60 years.
Instructional. Released 1995.
Bob is the son of Rudd Weatherwax, the original owner and trainer of Lassie. Bob was born on June 4, 1941, exactly one year to the day after "Pal" was born, the dog who made movie history by portraying Lassie in seven MGM films.
Bob grew up, surrounded by some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood history. He was the only child who could truthfully say that his family pet was the real Lassie. In fact, at home, Lassie was assigned the job of being Bob's babysitter.
Bob has spent his whole life in the entertainment/dog training business. As a child, he had duties in his father's kennels and was often called on to assist in training - even if only to stand still while Lassie or another working dog learned a routine. Later, after serving his country in the US Army, Bob returned home to California where he followed in his father's footsteps to became a Hollywood dog trainer. He apprenticed under his father on the Lassie TV series and then developed his own career as a dog trainer for movies and television. At his father's death, Bob carried on his father's legacy of breeding and training several more generations of Lassie.
Bob's filmography includes Aftershock, Back to the Future series, Big Jake, The Borrowers, David Copperfield specials, FBI Untold Stories, Harry and the Hendersons, Joshua's Heart, Lassie Best Friends are Forever, Life Goes On, The Magic of Lassie, Married with Children, Moment by Moment, The New Lassie series. Poltergeist II, Racing with the Moon, Red Dwarf, Roseanne, See You in the Morning, Simon and Simon, Skeezer, Stone Fox, The Watchers II, and Who's the Boss?

I used to see Rudd Weatherwax on the credits as a kid in Australia and always wondered about the people behind the dogs. Great to see the son carrying on the legend.

My male Collie - as a puppy - 'taught' himself to walk between my legs ! He ALWAYS does it from back to front, and I call it his ' Born Again Collie' move ! Pretty smart fella, so I'm teaching him ALL these Lassie tricks, now ! He seems to be very attentive, and enjoying it. :)

That 'horse actor', with Lassie, is the horse that played 'Fury' in the same titled kid series in the 1950s ! He played in a few of the earlier season Bonanza episodes, too. Just a great, all round horse actor.

The Lassie Dog Training System is of its time - please check out 'In Search of Lassie: A Dog Owner's Guide to the Lassie Myth,' and read about dog training methods used today.

The dog seems happy enough, and I don't see ANY abuse in these training methods at all. The cues and commands seem to be easy to learn and use for the person, and just as easy to understand/learn for the dog, etc....Why mess with about 50, 60 or even 70 years ( at least, now !! ) of personal ' dog training success' ? I've had Collies for years, and WILL use these easy techniques in training my current Collie, Laddie !

@@voiceofreason7856 You are right there is a lot right with what Lassie’s trainer was saying and doing. However, using slip chains can now be replaced by targeting which is a game where the dog stays by your side until you tell the dog to do otherwise, which means you don’t have to keep on nagging your dog to stay at heel with a pop on the slip chain which rattles a reminder to the dog. I love all things about the old Lassie TV series, and it is what got me interested in dog behaviour in the first place. And it inspired my book ‘In Search for Lassie’. Happy training Voice of Reason.

@@lassietalks3663 ideology based trainers always fail when I challenge them to show me their ability to call a boar strike dog at a half mile. Let's see it.

There's always some dipshit who HAS to bring up the modern LIMA/R PLus/Positive only nonsense into every discussion of dog training. As if there weren't millions if not billions of well behaved happy dogs before all this nonsense came about.
