LaserDisc Audio Guide - Part 3: AC-3 Dolby Digital

Фильм және анимация

Culturedog Sam Hatch has returned with a small series of videos hashing out the convoluted history of the audio portion of LaserDisc history. Analog, digital, mono, stereo, surround, Pro-Logic, AC-3, Dolby Digital, DTS… all those confusing acronyms and output jacks… all will be broken down and explained.
In this third video, Sam powers through the advent of 5.1 surround sound and its transition from the cinemaplexes to home theaters in 1995. The primary focus of this discussion is on AC-3, the audio codec also known as Dolby Digital and the somewhat confusing selection of consumer-grade gear that featured it. Players, decoders and demodulators… oh my!

The first time I heard Dolby Digital 5.1 in a Home Theatre System was in the Spring of 1999 and I was blown away. The movie was Batman Returns and it was the old barebones snapper case DVD edition. It made sense because Batman Returns was the first movie to be released with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. I remember reading that Warner Bros planned to re-release Batman Returns on LaserDisc with Dolby Digital but it was cancelled. One thing I love about audio on LaserDisc is that the Movie Studios often used the Theatrical Mixes which played with the movies during their theatrical run. Apparently they would not even reoptimize those mixes for a home theatre system so they were identical to what was heard in the Cinema. There were even some LaserDiscs where the Pro Logic mixes were considered to be better than the Dolby Digital mixes. Even though Dolby Digital on LaserDisc wasn't as convenient as DTS, I agree that it was implanted better. It was very nice that the PCM Stereo/Pro Logic mixes were retained on Dolby Digital LaserDiscs whereas For DTS, PCM Stereo/Pro Logic was completely dropped the DTS mix could be stored in the digital tracks. It was nice that for DVD Dolby Digital was simply plug and play.

That's an awesome first 5.1 experience to have! I wish that Batman Returns 5.1 LD reissue had happened, even though I still loved my regular Dolby Surround edition for years. Yeah, those theatrical mixes can be super punchy and dynamic! It really made home theater a knock-your-socks off experience in the 90s. It was like the old Maxell ads with the guy in the chair being blasted by air from his loudspeakers. haha

Apparently the Dolby Surround mix for Batman Returns was fold-down from the 5.1 Mix. I read somewhere that theatrical mixes were even used on DVD during the first few years of the format's life. But then they started creating a different mix that was specifically for a home theater system. I remember those old Maxell ads too.

I'm investing on a Laserdisc Home Theatre room (complete with a Pioneer Laserdisc player, Onkyo AV Receiver certified by THX, 5 Klipsch speakers with a subwoofer). So in order to listen to Dolby Digital sound on Laserdisc (to be frank, I never watched a Laserdisc ever and I never heard 5.1 surround sound on Laserdisc), I need a RF Demodulator for it.

‘95 the year I first got “into” laser, barely affording it as everything was so pricey. I remember renting GoldenEye at Blockbuster, and reading over the AC-3 insert and getting so excited! Still own a DVL-91 today and 150+ lasers. AC-3 and inturn laserdisc, was very short lived as DVD was on the horizon in 1997. But ‘95 for laser fans was an awesome year.

Fantastic video. I have no idea why it took me this long to stumble upon your channel. As you can see from my username I am a fan of the format and to me that period in the 1990s was some of the most exciting and memorable. I remember getting the ken cranes catalogs and calling their phone number to find out the upcoming titles. Good times. AC-3. Yes. It was awesome. My receiver in the late 90s had a built-in demodulator (Harmon Kardon AVR-75). Still might have it stashed in my storage unit. My current LD player is a Pioneer 704 and I also owned a 505 and 104 when I first got started. I always wanted an Elite CLD-97 or 99 but gave up on that years ago.

Great video. Your stuff is always very well researched and presented. I got into LD late, around 2004. I'm only now in 2021 about to dive into LD AC-3. I'm waiting on my demodulator to show up. I've already enjoyed a couple of DTS discs, but they're so expensive and few that in the long run it's cheaper and better to get a demodulator and AC-3 discs than spend a fortune on each rare DTS release.

Once again, a very informative video on the topic. In regards to third party companies that once provided mod boards, we had Precision LaserDisc in the states as well as their partner that you mentioned (Benedictus; DBA BDE Electronics). I purchased and installed a number of these boards back in the day but now I’m installing them again with my own scratch built boards since they can’t be found anymore. I think I have about five more players that I still need to modify (including two that will also get an Internal RF Demodulator as well) when I get the chance to do it. Also, AC3-RF Demodulators are no doubt expensive for what they do. I recommend (as was hinted in the video) to hunt down Dolby Digital processors that incorporate a digital output like the Sony, SDP-EP9ES & SDP-E800 and the Denon, AVD-2000 that can decode AC3-RF and convert it back to normal Dolby Digital and on to a modern day AV Receiver. These can be had for sometimes a lot less than a stand-alone Demodulator and it also has extra input jacks to boot.

Thanks David! Very cool to hear that you've been able to put together those boards and upgrade so many players. I should really get my act in gear and start looking into modding some of my players - especially my Quasar LD700. I'm on the lookout for one of those Sony demodulator/processor units, since I regretfully sold my 2nd MOD-RF1 a few years ago under the foolish assumption that I wouldn't need a 2nd AC-3 LD setup. That little box did its job well, but I'd rather step up to a processor and gain those extra inputs. Cheers!

Culturedog >>> I’m not super savvy with electronics but have always been handy with a soldering iron. My first attempt to make an AC3-RF output board took 10 years to perfect due to a combination of losing interest and not really being that great at understanding schematics. I had the bug about a year ago to get back into the hobby and prioritized getting that board working and soon enough I had it down perfectly. Looking forward to getting these last few players I have modded to AC3 just for the sake of just wanting a challenge and giving these players new capabilities. As for getting more Demodualtors, they definitely come in handy. I actually like the outboard processor option even more since I plan to incorporate them with my LD players with internal demodulators & regular AC3-RF outputs to have a dual player set-up for uninterrupted playback and ease of input switching.

Interesting video. I just ran into this (KZread random choice!). I got into AC-3 laserdiscs during its heyday but my player didn't have AC-3 output. So I purchased a kit for my Pioneer CLD503 player that output the AC-3 RF signnal. Then I purchased a Kenwood KR-V990D that has a AC-3 decoder builtin. That was my setup for a while until I replaced the Kenwood with a receiver that could do Dolby TrueHD etc. Then I needed to purchase a separate AC-3 decoder (can't recall the brand now since my LD player and AC-3 decoder have been packed away even though they still work)

I finally got an AC-3 player earlier this year (a CLD-D504). Then tracked down an old Denon pre-pro which demodulates the signal into my modern A/V receiver. And I have to say, the movie tracks I've listened to sound more 'theatrical'. There's a slight reverb, but dialogue is clear and there's a sense of openness. I don't get that from modern blu-ray soundtracks, where it often seems over-processed or near-field or whatever. I don't think this can be written off as placebo effect either - it's the real deal!!

If your 4K or HD tv has really good speakers built in you can still tell the difference between 5.1 sound and 7.1 sound or DTS surround without the 5.1 speakers. 7.1 is way more dynamic than 5.1, it just has more of a punch to it when you have thunder/lighting or an action scene. I don't think studios use Dolby Digital 7.1 on their blu rays anymore, the Halloween 35th anniversary blu is the only one I own that has a 7.1 track and maybe a few other movies. With Atmos, you need a surround set up to get that bouncing off the ceiling effect of a movie theater..... the tv won't do that.

Your wisdom is appreciated! I just got and restored a Denon la3000 from 1992. I had no idea ac-3 was a thing. Typically I only bother with analog stereo audio connections. That's where I got confused by the right channel being replaced with ac-3. I want to buy some movies like Stargate, BUT the player only has svideo and rca ports... So unless I mod it and buy a demodulator I'm stuck with the basics. My dumb question is, am I correct in assuming that being stuck with listening to mono audio only applies to older players that weren't equipped with digital stereo decoders and relied on the analog tracks? Also do you have any advice for making sure I don't buy any of the discs that had screwy audio synchronization? (Like Stargate did before they released corrected ones.) Thanks!

Hello Sam, I'm fairly new to the LD world having just starting my journey a short 4 months ago and I LOVE it! I have learned a lot from your videos. I have a Pioneer DVL-90 elite plugged into my Onkyo TX-SR444 receiver and all of that is plugged into my TCL 4k UHD. I run the picture through an upscaler and a filter. The picture is compatible with DVD's and some LD's are even better. The sound on the other hand Rocks! One question that I hope you can answer is one I have been chasing for 3 months now and haven't found any info. I have my LD player digital out connected to the digital in on my receiver, I get Dolby, Dolby 5.1 and DTS, when I play the disc the receiver shows the appropriate encoded sound track on its screen. I even have sound from AC-3 discs but I don't have AC-3 RF plugged in and the receiver doesn't display AC-3. Am I getting AC-3 RF sound from the LD players digital output? Or am I still missing an audio channel? When I watch Top Gun with AC-3 it sounds amazing! I can here the jets circle the room. So what am I missing?

  • @Culturedog

That's the stereo matrixed surround PCM track you're hearing. Since AC-3 discs also have stereo digital tracks, those are what get pumped out of the player's digital outs. I'm guessing your Onkyo's just doing a great job at decoding the surround information - probably with Dolby Pro-Logic IIx or something along those lines. Since you've got a newer receiver, the only way to hear the actual 5.1 track would be to connect the "AC-3 RF OUT (LD)" post on the back left side of the DVL-90 (right above Digital Out 1) to an outboard AC-3 demodulator (or a demodulator/decoder combo, which might be overkill), and then run an optical or coaxial cable to your Onkyo from that. On the plus side, the PCM digital tracks on most AC-3 discs sound fantastic, so you can still enjoy the discs while you look for a demodulator if you decide to chase one down. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and reaching out, and give a shout if you need any troubleshooting assistance! Cheers!

So the part of the video I was hoping to hear was your opinion on how much of a difference it made? As you said if you rocked the PCM strong tracks in a surround mode it was fantastic. It's tough to say if the payoff will be worth the trouble of hunting down a demodulator and integrating it a system for everyone, but I feel like it did kick my LD home theater experience up multiple notches. Lovin' this series, Sam👍 One question I do have (and you might be talking about this soon) - does DTS have less compression than AC-3? My player doesn't support either DTS or AC-3, but this is fascinating stuff because I've always been curious about the nitty gritty of LD audio. Since I don't have a compatible player I've never bought any DTS laserdiscs, but I've heard the sound quality is unbeatable. Do you concur?

  • @Culturedog

Thanks man! Yup, working on the DTS video right now and there's some chat about the compression. But yeah, DTS on LD is much less compressed - around 1,235 kbps vs. AC-3's 384 kbps. Combine that with some bombastic theatrical mixes and you've got some supremely tasty 5.1 discs! For one example - I just watched Jurassic Park: Lost World in DTS on LD for the first time this year, and it was sublime. Just a total treat for the ears all the way through!

  • @Culturedog

You don't have to manually switch over to analog on the player - the demodulator will be hooked up to the dedicated AC3 RF out and will automatically lock on to the signal if present. There are some demodulators that can also pass through PCM digital and DTS signals, but mine just accepts AC3 only.

  • @Culturedog

    @Culturedog

    4 жыл бұрын

It depends on what model receiver you have - there are a handful of receivers that can take an undemodulated RF signal from LD directly - usually mid- to late-90s models. If the AC-3 input doesn't specifically mention RF or LD, it's probably expecting a proper Dolby Digital bitstream, in which case you'd need to get an AC-3 RF demodulator to place in between the player and the receiver. This is the best list of currently known receivers that can handle a direct AC-3 RF signal from a laserdisc player: www.avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/652457-list-ac-3-rf-audio-gear.html

Yeah, the list gets confusing sometimes because of manufacturers reusing old model numbers or keeping them alive but with extra modifiers like "HDCI" at the tail end. But yeah, Denon had an AVP-A1 model with an AC-3 RF input from about 1996 to 1999.

Is that the VSX-21TXH model that dropped around 10 years ago or so? I don't believe that model can handle a direct RF signal from LD. It doesn't show up on the list of gear with built-in demodulation, but that's not a complete guarantee. One of the coaxial posts would have to specifically mention "RF IN", otherwise it's just a regular digital input that would need a demodulated signal. On the plus side, the DVL 919 is definitely capable of pumping out the RF signal if you decide to pick up an outboard demodulator or processor.

Yeah, the demodulator market was always pricy, but it's ramping up. Occasionally some deals will slip through the cracks though. I wonder what's causing that DTS glitch on the RCA? Does PCM audio pop too? Luckily, homemade AC-3 mods for the players are feasible - a few enthusiasts I know have pulled that off. And there's still a source in Germany for the boards as well.
