Laser Etching Leather and Wood Coasters

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm using my k40 laser to make leather and wood drink coasters. I had never used leather on the laser cutter before, and I thought it would be good to share the process of dialing in the grayscale imagery for raster etching. It is something I have not seen often in the videos I have watched. Then there is the standard, build and finish process. I have been watching this type of content for months and am super excited to have gone ahead and made the purchase. I have been having an absolute blast. A total reinvigoration of my making energy. If you are on the fence, I say go for it. These things are less expensive than entry level CNC machines today. Here is a link to the one I purchased:

It arrived in about a week, even during this lockdown and slow amazon period. I would love feedback from more experienced users - as well as any questions you may have. Thanks, and remember to subscribe!!

We have a line of laser additives that enhance the laser power to improve engraving. It works on leather and other substrates.

I have started engraving leather while it is moist. It cuts the soot way down.

You can also clean the soot under running water with a soft toothbrush after the engrave. Huge difference - not sure about using alcohol to clean it as it would tend to dry out the leather long term. Love your videos BTW

Nice video. Do you find the quality of the machine and performance on par with the higher end machines?

    No, that's NOT a K40. A K40 is a desktop sized 40W laser cutter, with a bed size of approximately 8 x 12 inches. A K40 also only costs around $350.

It’s a 50watt Chinese. Same “family” of lasers, just a bigger version.

@@ThisIsHowIMadeIt no it's not. This is a great machine, built like a tank. The only thing in common with a K40 is that both are CO2 lasers. K40 is a shitty entry level small work area laser cutter.
